25.01.2022 This is what it looks like when I open the gate and let the poultry out to free range...

24.01.2022 Enjoying the rain and the cooler weather. Decided that today is not the day to put the week old chicks and duckies outside!

22.01.2022 Nothing like illness and injury to set all your plans back. That has pretty much been the situation since March this year!Nothing like illness and injury to set all your plans back. That has pretty much been the situation since March this year!

21.01.2022 This was my welcome when I got home

18.01.2022 Posted a vid this morning of letting the flock out to free range. For those who are curious, this is how we get them all to go back at night.

18.01.2022 Really hard to get a photo when Nibbler is nibbling on the camera

17.01.2022 Every year at different times I find myself "Sorting Seeds" - What have I got? What can be sown now? What can be sown direct?... What has to be sown in punnets or pots? Finally I have come up with a system that I think will work for me! Although I do need some more 2L ice-cream tubs.

17.01.2022 The poultry and I have survived the last couple of days. Now hoping we actually get a decent amount of the rain that is floating around. Last couple of rain events we've had a couple of mls at the most which was disappointing, especially when they were forecasting 10-20mls. At 7:30 this morning it was still 22 degrees celsius - we're still on the way down to our overnight low of 19, which according to the weather app we won't reach until 10! Free Ranging on hot days is most d...efinitely the best option for the poultry. They move around a lot, always finding new places to stay cool. The chooks and ducks disappear under trees and the house (some stand in front of the door when they discover we have the swampy on and get the cool breeze from that) while the geese wander and make sure they take a drink from every container as they pass by. Every few hours I'll brave the burning sun to check for eggs and top up all the water containers around the place.

16.01.2022 Took some photos of our non-muscovy ducks today

14.01.2022 Since the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic we have been fielding questions on keeping chickens. To help with that I am putting together a short guide to keeping chickens for those of you who have just got some chooks for the first time and for those of you thinking about it. Hit me with your questions here -

13.01.2022 Why a pic of a watering can? Because Zanda Ganda (formerly Gawain) considers it his mortal enemy! It's quite funny filling up waters with him constantly getting in the way to attack it.... Zanda Ganda & Gwynevere Goose are now in one of the permanent breeding pens as we've had to separate them because Galen kept running Gawain off and taking the two girls for himself. None of the honkers are thrilled with the situation but they'll get used to it. We may have goslings available later this year...

13.01.2022 Poultry worming mash ready to serve. And some eager girls awaiting a serve r 2 l - Lakenvelder, Andalusian & Cream Legbar

12.01.2022 The geese are nesting. We have Zander Gander & Gwynevere as one pair and Galen & Gabriella as the other. Should have Gosling's soon! Here is some goose spam of Gabriella & Galen - the more aggressive of the 2 pairs. I narrowly avoided having my fingers and ankles chewed taking these photos!

11.01.2022 I'm a little bit focused on autumn leaves as we have quite a lot of them laying around. What do you do with autumn leaves? Considering my lack of fitness due to six-eight weeks of health issues and injuries raking up leaves and wheel-barrowing them to various places around the property has actually been a good way to work on improving my fitness levels. Over the weeks I’ve worked up my fitness level to being able to rake up six wheelbarrows of leaves in one session! I can on...Continue reading

11.01.2022 So, it seems my poultry have a thing about crapping in my pocket!!!! Today I was holding a honkling and turns out she left me a little surprise package. Was a bit of a shock when I put my hand in my pocket!! After the broody duck episode, which is by far the absolutely worst experience I've had when it comes to being shat upon and almost cost $300 because my phone was upside down in my pocket, all the open bits exposed! As it is we had to throw away the case, so that poop in... my pocket cost $25!! Anyways, Tim bought me an arm backpack for my phone. My phone is now much safer and available if I am, heaven forbid, wearing something without pockets. When I get this sewing gig together everything is going to have pockets!

11.01.2022 So, it's 11:30pm Thursday and while we're watching a movie and there's a weird tapping noise outside, as if Gabriella Goose is outside sitting on the nest she's decided to build herself in the side garden bed just outside the front door. But it can't be her, we locked her back up in the main pen... What do you know, it's her! So we take Gabriella Goose & Galen Gander and lock them and her eggs into the large A-frame. Fast forward to Saturday night when neither Gabriella nor G...alen will co-operate and go into the pen. Amazingly I catch Galen easily enough and put him away. Gabriella, on the other hand had to make things difficult. Did I mention it was dark? It was dark. We have this great lamp thing, it's really bright and very easy to blind yourself with while chasing a recalcitrant goose. I chase her all the way back to the main pen that she won't stay in because she wants to nest, in gumboots that are slightly too big for me, in the dark, with a torch I keep blinding myself with as I try to avoid stepping in holes or tripping over branches and l lunge for her. I touch her back with the tips of my fingers and she drops like a stone coz she knows I've caught her. I drop like a stone right behind her as something goes "twang" in my right glute. I limped back carrying her tucked under my right arm (my left shoulder blade had seized up earlier in the week) sobbing from a mixture of pain, exhaustion and despair, while she softly honked in my ear. Depositing her in the pen, I managed to get my fingers out before Galen chewed on them. Gee, I really hope these eggs are fertile! A visit to the osteo today revealed a torn hamstring, fortunately not too bad, so shouldn't take more than 4 weeks to recover!

10.01.2022 After losing Henry the wonder dog, we contacted Brama Labradors Inc. and invited them over to give the pups some exposure time to chooks, ducks and geese. The pups were laid back and very chill, unlike the geese who were quite disturbed at having these strange creatures close by. Bonus - lots of puppy cuddles.... We did observe all the covid-19 social distancing stuff.

10.01.2022 Oh dear, life has been frighteningly busy and I realised the other day that I have not posted anything for ages! Ok, so for some very quick updates - Nibbler is big! And Nibbler is a girl!!! Yay!!! Of her 3 companions, at least one is a drake, two weeks younger and significantly larger. None of them like being picked up.... We still have all the goslings. Apparently they make better eating at a year old, so we're waiting a little longer before processing. They also make good flock guards. The ravens don't steal our eggs if we have geese with the flock. I will be putting up some ads on gumtree with our excess stock in the next week or so. As for eggs, it's autumn, winter is closing in and the poultry are not laying much, and they're moulting. Feathers are everywhere and some chooks are looking decidedly naked. And yesterday we gathered no eggs at all! I also learnt something interesting the other day - never say your dog is too small to be dangerous!!! We had the local butcher come and do one of our ram lambs (about 7 months, not far off being as big as him mother). The butcher already had a couple of dead lambs in the truck (about the same age and size), and they'd had their throats ripped out by a Jack Russell Terrier!!! Oh, and the cockies stripped our lemon trees bare!

09.01.2022 Took this photo of Gwynevere on the nest yesterday while I was taking photos of our pasture and the neighbour's pasture to go with my article on soil health for Benalla Permaculture (they're on FB if you wanna check them out). If you look very closely there is a gosling under her wing!!! (I would circle it if FB would let me edit the photo) I never did take note of when she started sitting but I was guessing she'd be hatching around now. I think Gabriella will be a couple of weeks behind.

09.01.2022 This is not a post I wanted to write, but we recently had to have Henry the wonder therapy dog put to sleep. No longer will our happy boy run through the grass with a big smile on his face scaring the chooks & ducks as he searched for feathers to chew upon but he will run on in our hearts forever. Miss you, Henry dawg.

08.01.2022 This little cutie (Muscovy duckling) hatched the other day, and due to a miscalculation on my part is all alone. The rest aren't due to hatch for another 2 weeks. There will be lots of ducky cuddles over the next 2 weeks

08.01.2022 There's been a few ups & downs at Molly Rose over the last few months and with the lockdowns due to the coronavirus it was probably the best time for it all to go pear shaped... Near the end of March I twisted my ankle chasing a couple of naughty lambs that had escaped. This ended up with a hospital trip to make sure I hadn't broken anything... fast forward to the start of June and it is still weak, sore and unstable - no running, jumping, skipping or hopping for a while yet.... Good Friday saw me disappearing to Wangaratta Hospital in the back of an ambulance with a mysterious fever and extreme abdominal pain. I came home again on Easter Monday after a few days of serious doses of antibiotics and pain medications. Two weeks later in mid April we had to have darling Henry put down. It's been 6 weeks since we lost our beautiful boy and typing this even now brings tears to my eyes. We miss him terribly. Mid May I had to put down two of our chooks - Little Roo, one of our sweet pet roos had three tumours, and Skales. She was the last of the first lot of chooks we purchased back in 2013. She was a lovely old lady and had raised us several members of our current flock. And in the last week of May I was back in hospital for tests to make sure there was nothing more sinister going on. Happy to report that nothing was noticeably wrong, although I'm still waiting on the test results. Needless to say, for a few days I was not the best or the brightest. But it hasn't been all bad! One of the ambos was also a chook fan and I now have a silver barnevleder rooster and will get some fertilised eggs to hatch this spring. We've had puppies come to visit, we've played lots of games and I've spent lots of time laughing at the antics of the poultry and sheep.

08.01.2022 Things that I ponder while outside at Molly Rose... Is it called "having/taking a gander" because ganders are very inquisitive and curious and are always coming over to check out what you're doing? Or is it just that there are two words which mean something different but have the same spelling?

08.01.2022 I've been a bit slow with the updates lately. I will get better, I promise. So, the poultry are now laying lots. We are not yet selling eggs as a). I keep going over the 50 hen limit so need an egg stamp and are eagerly awaiting its arrival, so until then, legally I am not allowed to sell my eggs b). we are breeding, so several eggs are being incubated (I need another incubator!) ... This is the stamp you will soon be seeing on the rainbow egg collection from Molly Rose Heritage Harvest. I will still be dating the eggs and writing name and breed on the shell and they will have this cute little rainbow stamp too. Now to work out how to put this design on the egg cartons!

08.01.2022 Brama Labradors Inc. came over with 10 puppies from Gwen's litter to spend time in the company of poultry. They were very chill. Some of them freaked the geese out when they wandered over to see what was going on and we brought out the little nibbler to join the party.

07.01.2022 Our sheep have been trained to come when I call, because when I call, I always have food. They will generally follow me anywhere if I have a bucket of food which I have found to be very useful. Yesterday they came without being called coz they saw me walking to the Molyullah tennis courts. I did have a bucket of feed too so they weren't disappointed. In this vid, Cherry, the fattest and greediest of all my lovelies was already waiting at the fence.

06.01.2022 Here is some of the flock waiting for us to come out and feed them. As you can imagine, when the poultry are free ranging, our front door step and surrounds are covered in fertiliser!

06.01.2022 So much for posting once a week! Anyways, I am beginning to wonder if Wonky could possibly have some albino genes. He is much paler than his relations in beak, feet and feathering and his eyes seem different, but they're not red.... The male honklings are lighter than the females and are quite yellow while Wonky is most definitely white.

05.01.2022 27mls the night before plus 60mls in the space of an hour results in this on Wednesday 29th April. The creek down the back has burst its banks, the pit is full, much of Molly Rose is underwater including the driveway and out the front gate there is a river! (separate post) Great weather for the ducks and geese, not so much for the chooks who are sheltering on the veranda, in small cages. The Muscovies like to just sit there in the rain. The Welsh Harlequins have a ball running around finding new puddles and edibles. The geese continue to roam, bathing on what used to be the front lawn!

02.01.2022 Peach unexpectedly gave birth mid August in the cold, dark and wet. She had twins, but only this little fella survived. Such a cutie. He follows the roosters around that free range in the same area and treats all the other ewes as his friends often sleeping next to one of them while Peach is off grazing elsewhere. So far none of the other girls have had their babies yet

01.01.2022 Check out our new egg stamp! Designed by yours truly with a lot of technical assistance. Don't worry, I'll still be handwriting the laid date, bird name and breed on the shell. That said, as much as I've enjoyed decorating the egg cartons by hand, it does take a lot of dedicated time and brain cells, both of which are in short supply, especially with summer kicking in so we are working on a label too... Getting closer to having eggs back in at Fruits N Fare
