24.01.2022 #lestweforget2020 Darren Siwes is of Aboriginal and Dutch descent and his works explore themes of history, colonialism and Indigenous identity. This work shows the artist dressed in a suit, standing in front of an Adelaide war memorial. Siwes has turned himself into an apparition by using a long exposure and appearing in the frame for only part it. This technique gives the image a dreamlike and ghostly quality. The artist’s transparent figure haunts this war memorial as if to... suggest the ongoing presence of Indigenous Australians in contemporary life, and to question why Indigenous participation in historic events such as the First World War was overlooked. The shimmering reflective surface of the print is a result of the artist’s use of the silver dye bleach printing process. This surface contributes to the ghostly effect of the image. 23.01.2022 MGA is pleased to introduce James Tylor, the fifth and final commissioned artist for our upcoming exhibition STAGES: photography through the pandemic. James Tylor is a multi-disciplinary artist whose practice explores the Australian environment, culture and social history. Working across photography, video, painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, sound, scent and food, Tylor examines Australian cultural representations through the perspectives of his multicultural heritag...e that comprises Nunga (Kaurna), Mori (Te Arawa) and European (English, Scottish, Irish, Dutch and Norwegian) ancestry. Tylor’s work focuses largely on the history of 19th century Australia and its continual effect on present day issues surrounding cultural identity and the environment. ‘My new photographic series, Nguya, will comprise of landscape photographs from Warrang Sydney, down the Murray River and the South East coastline to Tarntanya Adelaide following the path of the smallpox epidemic across Australia. In a time when our contemporary experience of the COVID-19 global pandemic is considered by the media as ‘unprecedented’ in the history of our country, I want to remind contemporary Australians of the smallpox epidemic that killed well over half the population of this continent only 200 years ago.’ STAGES: photography through the pandemic will see Jane Burton, Cherine Fahd, Phuong Ngo, Isobel Knowles + Van Sowerwine, and James Tylor respond creatively to the unprecedented social, environmental and economic impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The resulting bodies of work will feature in online and gallery-based exhibition outcomes as part of MGA’s Luminaries exhibition series in 2021. A selection of the commissioned works will also join the MGA Collection to contribute to the cultural record of this time. Read more about James Tylor’s project here: https://tinyurl.com/y6zrqofk

23.01.2022 Glenn Sloggett (1964 ) is a Melbourne-based artist who practices a highly personalised form of documentary photography, recording aspects of his environment that emphasise the tragedy and humour of human ambition. His earliest series of works, Abandon, focused on highlighting traces of human activity in abandoned, dilapidated suburban settings. Sloggett’s photographs, whilst devoid of actual people, draw attention to the often-overlooked details of everyday suburbia and spea...k to the lives of ordinary human beings. His work 'Filing cabinets' is featured in VIEW FINDING, an image-led publication that looks at the past, present and future of photography in Australia, presenting moments that have defined MGA, its collection and exhibition history. This publication is supported by MGA Philanthropic partners Gordon Darling Foundation, The Vizard Foundation, Bowness Family Foundation. 22.01.2022 One of the things we miss at the moment is being able to be in contact. There’s some clanging irony in the pandemic patter that’s rolled out in virtual meetings and in emails ‘I’m just reaching out’, ‘let’s stay in touch’ when really, it’s been months since we’ve brushed passed anyone, or held anyone’s hand. The quick, sweet press of two cheeks as we greet someone, the firm grasp of a handshake, a tight, good hug. Oh how we miss it all! Photographs selected from the Mon...ash Gallery of Art Collection put a point on just how much can be communicated through touch. The Beatles put it well in 1963. View this mini online only exhibition over at our Instagram account @mga_photography and follow our stories to learn more about the works and the artists that made them. #australianhomeofphotography

19.01.2022 Shout out to all the dad’s today, wishing we could throw our arms around you #happyfatherday Robert Ashton's photographs of Fitzroy are characteristic of the highly personalised and soulful approach to documentary photography prevalent among photographers during the 1970s. This series was originally published as a photobook Into the hollow mountains: a portrait of Fitzroy (1974), which included essays and poems by a range of contemporary writers. Ashton launched Into the holl...ow mountains at Brummels Gallery in December 1974 with an exhibition of selected prints from the book. Ashton's pictures were presented alongside an exhibition of photographs by Carol Jerrems, who was launching her own photobook A book about Australian women (1974). 19.01.2022 Feature artist | Broomberg & Chanarin Until recently, Adam Broomberg (1976) and Oliver Chanarin (1971) were collaborating artists who live and work between London and Berlin. They have recently and dramatically ended their collaboration with a final exhibition The Late Estate Broomberg & Chanarin in Barcelona, Spain. Their work has featured in major group exhibitions over the years, including Conflict, time, photography at Tate Modern, London (2015), the Yokohama Triennale ...(2017), and documenta 14 (2017). Currently on view at MGA is an unprecedented view of the duo’s series, Fig. from 2007. For this exhibition, the artists have loaned the orginal proof sheets used to produce their oft-referenced book, Fig., which interrogates what it means to collect things, and in turn whether photography can be an act of collecting rather than of creating. Fig. purposefully stretches and distorts the definition and intention of documentary photography through the combination of images and text that act as a starting point for us to consider how stories are told. You can visit Not standing still: new approaches to documentary photography and view this work until 16 May 2021: https://www.mga.org.au/exhibition/view/exhibition/248

19.01.2022 Feature artist | Alec SOTH Currently at MGA as part of Not standing still: new approaches in documentary photography is work from the landmark series Sleeping by the Mississippi by Alec Soth. The landscapes, interiors and portraits of this series allude to aspects of the human condition: struggle, sickness, crime, redemption, resilience, reverie, politics, religion, loneliness and death, and overarchingly, to the complexity of an individual’s life. Soth also pays homage to t...he tradition of the American road trip, familiar to us from novels and films. But this is not a government initiative, nor an exercise in narrative arc and resolution. Sleeping by the Mississippi is ultimately an ellipsis; the start of a sentence with the vast tracts of possible dialogue left perfectly and purposefully unsaid. Just a few days left to see Not standing still: new approaches to documentary photography and view this work. Not standing still: new approaches in documentary photography Curators: Daniel Boetker-Smith, Pippa Milne, Gareth Syvret Closing this Sunday 16 May 2021 Free entry: https://bit.ly/3tFkcJy

17.01.2022 ‘We knew this year was going to be like no other. Over the summer period, our country was ravaged by bushfires just at the precipice of the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic which has swept across the globe and changed how our society functions and how we live in the world. The dislocation that these events have had on society have been infused into the experience of artists and their practice. Some photographers this year have chosen to tackle the currency of these events, other...s have works that predate the fires and pandemic there is an intensity to these works, and one can read a pre- and post-COVID-19 lens the shortlisted artists illustrate its impact and the change that we all feel.’ Anouska Phizacklea, MGA Gallery Director Thank you for sharing Art Almanac! 13.01.2022 MGA is pleased to introduce Isobel Knowles + Van Sowerwine as the forth commissioned artists for our upcoming exhibition STAGES: photography through the pandemic. ‘Our practice centres around the way miniatures, photography and animation can speak to an audience’s imaginations directly and open up unexpected emotional responses. The immersive experiences we create bridge the gap between on and off screen reality, disrupting normal perception to create significant narrative e...ngagement. Our work investigates narratives of community, childhood and metamorphosis and engages viewers both physically and emotionally.’ ‘We intend to build miniature sets representing domestic interiors we inhabit, but with surreal and unexpected elements that reflect our own internal emotional landscapes. Some of these will be based on virtual backgrounds used during video-conferencing, others on the difficult emotions we experienced.’ STAGES: photography through the pandemic will see Jane Burton, Cherine Fahd, Phuong Ngo, Isobel Knowles + Van Sowerwine, and James Tylor respond creatively to the unprecedented social, environmental and economic impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The resulting bodies of work will feature in online and gallery-based exhibition outcomes as part of MGA’s Luminaries exhibition series in 2021. 13.01.2022 MGA is pleased to introduce the third commissioned artist for our upcoming exhibition STAGES: photography through the pandemic as Jane Burton. Burton is an Australian photographer living and working in Melbourne. Her practice explores mortality, female desire, isolation and loneliness within a personal lived experience. ‘In the last months of the pandemic I have felt my isolation, and that of others, more profoundly. ... My recent pictures have depicted closed-up shop windows by night, their interiors and contents lit with ethereal light. The desire to enter a world that is withheld during the time of the pandemic is what I wish to continue to explore through photographic stills. I have long been compelled to document places that are in threat of disappearance: a very real possibility in the wake of the pandemic many businesses will not make it; many leases will not be renewed.’ STAGES: photography through the pandemic will see Jane Burton, Cherine Fahd, Phuong Ngo, Isobel Knowles + Van Sowerwine, and James Tylor respond creatively to the unprecedented social, environmental and economic impacts of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The resulting bodies of work will feature in online and gallery-based exhibition outcomes as part of MGA’s Luminaries exhibition series in 2021. 10.01.2022 Happy Mother’s Day! These photographs by artist Viva Gibb were taken in her local neighbourhood, in West and North Melbourne during the 1970s and 1980s. Living, working and raising two children in West Melbourne, Gibb immersed herself in her local community, observing and documenting the people around her. Gibb created warm and sympathetic portraits of children, migrants, workers and elderly citizens. Her informal and intimate compositions celebrate the everyday and reveal he...r progressive and compassionate approach to humanity. In these portraits, Gibb has incorporated rich textural details as well as personalised contextual information for each of her subjects, providing viewers with small windows into the lives and characters of the people in her neighbourhood while making images that have now become historically and culturally significant social documents of this particular place in time. 07.01.2022 Pat Brassington (1942 ) is a Hobart-based artist who studied printmaking and photography at the Tasmanian School of Art, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts in 1985. Brassington draws on a personal archive of visual material to compose her images. This archive includes both photographic and non-photographic material, which has either been found or produced by Brassington. Her work takes inspiration from surrealist photography, with its recurring interest in fetish objects ...and uncanny domestic scenes. Brassington typically employs digital collage to manufacture disjointed compositions, and she exhibits her work in elliptical series that suggest dream-like narratives. Brassington’s 'Font' is featured in VIEW FINDING, an image-led publication that looks at the past, present and future of photography in Australia, presenting moments that have defined MGA, its collection and exhibition history. Robyn Stacey is one of Australia’s leading photographic artists whose fascination with the still-life genre inspired the magnificent works in this exhibition. Through the contemporary medium of photography Stacey brings historical collections to life on a monumental scale, interrogating what these collections meant... for the original owners and brilliantly interweaving personal historical narratives into sumptuous still lifes. 04.01.2022 Rennie Ellis's ‘Richmond fans, Grand Final, MCG' (1974) is one of the most famous photographs of the most important date in the Australian football calendar: Grand Final Day. Ellis’s photograph encapsulates the centrality of clothing and colour to the tribalism of football fandom in particular among ‘cheer squads’ some of it official merchandise, some adapted o...r homemade. The image brilliantly exemplifies the unique ability of still photography to render human physicality and a moment in time. Enjoy these colourful photographs that capture the joy of being part of a crowd. Want to see more?
