Professor Jonathan Baell from MIPS and Dr Arun Konagurthu from the Faculty of Information Technology, Department of Data Science and Artificial Science are working with Pennsylvania State University to create a new antiviral drug to treat COVID-19 related infection. 14.01.2022 A day of big wins for us! Professor Mark Febbraio has also been awarded a 2020 Australian Museum Eureka Prize, having received the UNSW Eureka Prize for Scientific Research. ... Professor Febbraio has discovered a new compound (called IC7FC) which improves glucose metabolism and prevents weight gain. The compound could be used as a drug therapy to treat diabetes and obesity. Dr Michelle Halls, researcher, laboratory head in the Drug Discovery Biology Theme at MIPS and an executive member of Her Research Matters has been awarded a $1.25 million Viertel Senior Medical Research Fellowship. The grant will support her research into understanding ‘signal organisation’ with the aim to design more effective drugs with fewer side effects.... The Fellowship is one of Australia's largest philanthropic medical research grants and a prestigious achievement. Researchers from the Centre for Medicine Use and Safety, Dr Jenni Ilomaki and Faculty Affiliate, Associate Professor Luke Grzeskowiak have found that uptake of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) in Australia has not only plateaued since 2015, but in Victoria and New South Wales, rates have dropped from 20-50%.
