20.01.2022 T'was a week before Christmas, And all through the town, People wore masks, That covered their frown. The frown had begun... Way back in the Spring, When a global pandemic Changed everything. They called it corona, But unlike the beer, It didn’t bring good times, It didn’t bring cheer. Airplanes were grounded, Travel was banned. Borders were closed Across air, sea and land. As the world entered lockdown To flatten the curve, The economy halted, And folks lost their nerve. From March to July We rode the first wave, People stayed home, They tried to behave. When summer emerged The lockdown was lifted. But away from caution, Many folks drifted. Now it’s December And cases are spiking, Wave two has arrived, Much to our disliking. It’s true that this year Has had sadness a plenty, We’ll never forget The year 2020. And just ‘round the corner - The holiday season, But why be merry? Is there even one reason? To decorate the house And put up the tree, Who will see it, No one but me. But outside my window The rain gently falls, And I think to myself, Let’s deck the halls! So, I gather the ribbon, The garland and bows, As I play those old carols, My happiness grows. Christmas is not cancelled And neither is hope. If we lean on each other, I know we can cope ~ Anonymous Keep it going!

14.01.2022 Introducing to our MVVH friends, Vet Nurse Tracey! Previously gaining a Bachelor degree in Marine Geoscience, Tracey became a qualified Vet Nurse in 2009 and worked in clinics around the Inner West area of Sydney. During this time she also started a home pet minding business, focusing on senior pet care. Taking a few years off, Tracey became a qualified Yoga teacher, but stayed in touch with her vet nursing skills by volunteering at the Villa Kitty Rescue Centre in Bali. Du...ring her time here she worked with and trained local Balinese vet nurses to help increase their skills, assisted with implementing systems to control infectious animal diseases and worked in the surgical wards. Since starting with us in June, right amongst the Covid chaos, Tracey has been a bubbling burst of energy! She has a keen interest in Feline behaviour and feline geriatric care, especially given her 2 rescue fur babies, Tessa and Batman (pictured below) are both in their senior years. Next time you see Tracey, please give her a big warm Northern Beaches welcome!

11.01.2022 This gorgeous little fella was in today having a check up with Dr Anne after being caught in verandah paneling in Collaroy Plateau. He was brought in by a vaccinated & experienced bat handler from Sydney Wildlife. Thankfully he checked out well & will receive some R & R before being released again. A REMINDER If you find an injured bat or flying fox, do not attempt to help the animal yourself or touch it in any way. ... Contact a local wildlife group, Sydney Wildlife Rescue or WIRES, who will send out an appropriate wildlife carer. Flying-foxes play an important role in dispersing seeds & pollinating flowering plants & are crucial to keeping native bushland healthy.

04.01.2022 Leptospirosis alert! Recent case of Leptospirosis seen on the Northern Beaches. Sadly a young dog contracted Leptospirosis in Elanora Heights and was treated by our colleagues at Northside Veterinary Specialists, unfortunately he died of resultant kidney failure. ... This is the first confirmed case of this disease in the local area. Leptospirosis can be transmitted to people although that did not happen in this most recent case. While one dog does not make a cluster, in light of this case, we have updated our vaccination protocols to recommend the following : You should get your dog vaccinated against leptospirosis * If your dog is a known ‘ratter’(hunts for rats ) * is allowed off leash where rats have known to have been * drinks water from stagnant puddles MVVH stocks the vaccine but appointments are necessary. 2 booster vaccinations are needed, spaced 2-4 weeks apart. We will update with more information as it comes to hand Please find links below for more information https://www.monavalevet.com.au//recent-leptospirosis-outb/ https://vetpracticemag.com.au/dog-owners-urged-to-speak-to/ https://www.health.nsw.gov.au//fa/Pages/leptospirosis.aspx
