23.01.2022 A happy Carnaby couple coming in for a lunchtime drink in Moora. You can tell who is the lady and who is the gent from the facial features - red eye/dark beak for the gent and light beak/light cheek for the lady. Also you can see that even though they are referred to as a 'black' cockatoo, they are actually brown/black (Wally K often mentions this !)

23.01.2022 Thanks to ABC Perth for sharing our happy cockies

22.01.2022 Moore River Blues. Loe the native blue pincushion cornflowers (Brunonia australis). They bloom on a few sandy spots in the north east Moore catchment

21.01.2022 Fabulous Featherflowers blooming together on the sandy-gravel heathland in the Moora Shire. Verticordia picta, Verticordia brachypoda, Verticordia insignis subsp. eomagis & Verticordia nobilis (red and yellow)

21.01.2022 Carna-baby monitoring today in Moora. 8 Carnaby's Black Cockatoo chicks growing well, some are huge!! Also, quite a few hens sitting on eggs still. Good work cockies!

21.01.2022 And that's a wrap for our week of soils/gardening/permaculture/healthier living workshops Its been a fun and interesting week in Perenjori, Moora, Guilderton and Woodridge. We learnt lots about our soils - testing them, conditions for growing veg, how to improve. We had a look at the amazing community gardens in PJ and Guilderton. We learnt about integrated systems including pest and weed management. We helped the Moora High school horticulture students install veg beds and plan their patch. We learnt about managing our acreage better to be ecowise and firewise. Huge thanks to Fiona Blackham from Gaia Permaculture and Chris Ferreira from Forever Project for visiting the Moore catchment and sharing your information. Feedback from attendees was excellent!!! Thanks to the State NRM Program for funding this project.

20.01.2022 Weed aWareness. Rampant feral Pink Gladioli (Gladiolus caryophyllaceous). Seems to be everywhere on the sand country Perth to south of Moora -roadsides, all through the native bushland. Go grab a Gladi (or 100) and help control this weed - remember to pull out the corm also! #weeds #westernaustralia #notawildflower

18.01.2022 Carnaby trough party in Moora ! Lots around for the breeding season, and they do like a drink and a dip

16.01.2022 Wally explaining how he made the nest log

16.01.2022 Grrrrr... Disappointing! But this is why we need to continue trying to sort the environment out at a local level. Can't rely on the government to lead

15.01.2022 Cocky native seed collecting today ! Ian Pulbrook came down to supervise some native seed collecting for our Carnabys projects on gravel country. Ian and the Yued team picked a heap of Allocasuarina and Melaleuca seed plus bagged some Hakea preissii -needle tree - cockies love them ! Thanks to Iluka for funding this project

15.01.2022 What is Moore Catchment Council doing in 2020?? Well here we go. Into the new decade and MCC's 25th anniversary as a community landcare/coastcare group existing to 'maintain and improve the health of the Moore River Catchment'. Here are the projects we're working on this year funded through State NRM Program, National Landcare Program and Iluka. There are still only 2 staff - Rachel (landcare officer 4.5 days wk) & Helen (executive officer 2 days wk)...but we get it done.......somehow :) 1) WORKING ON COUNTRY - We have projects for paid opportunities for local Yued to work on country and share knowledge including revegetation jobs, seed collection and fencing protection for the Old Reserve, Moora 2) PYP GRASS - We have 2 projects to spray weedy Pyp Grass at Guilderton. The community will help with revegetation through seed collecting from remnant bush and a community planting day 3) KNOWLEDGE BUILDING - We are planning environmental knowledge building opportunities including hosting a monster event - The Last Stand 2 environmental event in Sep 2020 4) HEALTHY SOIL, HEALTHY COMMUNITY - We are planning a series of workshops in April to share Permaculture principles and share ways of building healthy soils through compost making, worm farms etc for a healthier environment and community 5) MOORE NATURAL ASSETS - We have projects for farmers to plant 50,000 native species in the winter to enhance biodiversity, and fence off 70ha of creeks and remnant bush from stock damage 6) ENGAGING CHILDREN - We have projects to work with primary and secondary school children to teach them and provide practical opportunities on Aboriginal culture and bush tucker gardens; Native vegetation identification, seed collecting, and planting; Microbat conservation and bat box construction 7) CARNABY'S BLACK COCKATOO CONSERVATION - We have activities to actively protect and help build knowledge including log nest building, nest and population monitoring, forage/breeding habitat planting, and information booklets and signage. Wowzers - that list is crazy ! Here's to 2020

15.01.2022 Guilderton community garden. An excellent initiative and asset for the community

15.01.2022 don't wish away the windscreen bugs !!

13.01.2022 We've been digging deeper into soil today down at Carrah farms near Calingiri. Fiona from Gaia Permaculture took the group through healthy soil and good gardening practices. Loads of interesting tips and ideas to take home. Everyone also got to test their soil for pH and work out what type of soil they had ie loam, clay loam, gutless sand.... A very interesting day indeed. Huge thanks to Sarah Mason for hosting us at her house and the State NRM Program for funding this project.

13.01.2022 Over at Badgy school this morning with Wally and the Kerkhof Carnaby Group team putting up 2 new log nesting hollows. The kids were super enthusiastic to see what was going on and get involved with screwing on one of the lids. Badgy is an excellent Carnaby location with lots of good quality forage heath habitat and areas of Wandoo for breeding. Lets hope the cockies find these new nests We also did a fun interactive Carnaby quiz which the kids excelled at Thanks to Iluka for funding this project and the school for letting us invade.

12.01.2022 Stunning Moore wildflowers adorning a roadside near you now on sandplain/gravel ......and not a wreath flower in sight Lechenaultia linarioides, Lechenaultia biloba, Podolepis lessonii, Calytrix leschenaultii, Grevillea eriostachya, Petrophile linearis, Podotheca gnaphalioides

12.01.2022 Testing our soil pH - an easy test which is a fundamental part to getting good soil health for growing produce.

11.01.2022 Carna-baby checks this morning in Moora before it got too hot...good news with 12 log nests being checked - 8 chicks in the nests (including 1 with big twins!! :) :) ) 1 chick had fledged a nest, 1 was thinking about fledging (hanging round the log entrance). 2 log nests had 0 yet hens had been interested. 1 nest had been successful but the chick (s) had died 2 weeks in (abandoned I suspect).

10.01.2022 Revisit to the mound

10.01.2022 Intelligent crows !!

08.01.2022 Was down in Guilderton checking on the Pyp Grass weed spraying. Met up with Geoff and Jonno from Western Botanical who are spraying the Pyp with a grass selective herbicide. Its hard work as they are spot spraying through the natives. Geoff was really impressed at the knock down from the last spray in 2018 and also super impressed at the revegetation the community did in July. I was not impressed with the pillock who drove a 4wd through the dunes over some of the plants and tree guards! The WB team will be there for the rest of the week as long as the weather holds. This a good project worth funding as progress is being made. Thanks to the State NRM Program for funding this project.

08.01.2022 Exploring the Guilderton community garden. Such a great set up ! Lots of recycled fridges used as wicking beds. They use all the produce in the community club - fresh tasty veg direct from the next door garden

06.01.2022 Have a look on the link to look through this book - stories from Yued country

05.01.2022 Golden glorious Nuytsia floribunda (Moodja or WA Christmas tree) blooming. Doesn't get any better than those contrasting Aussie colours

05.01.2022 The grand-ist of them all ! Verticordia grandis (Scarlet Featherflower) never fails to wow !!

04.01.2022 What an awesome plant !! Lechenaultia tubiflora - Heath Leschenaultia. Vivid ! Blooming after a fire

03.01.2022 Testing our soils down at Guilderton. Lots of alkali soil down at the coast !

03.01.2022 Our next event is Fri 23rd Oct in Guilderton. NATIVE SEED COLLECTING AND PROCESSING WORKSHOP. We really need your help to collect local native seed from the dunes so we can grow it for our next community planting day next year (and subsequent years). BUT you have to get a seed collecting licence from DBCA so you need to do this workshop in order to get a licence. MCC will pay for your licence on the day. The day will be run by APACE nursery - who grow our Guilderton seedlings. 9:30am at the community hall. RSVP to Rachel [email protected] or text on 0409 296 264
