23.01.2022 THE KIDS ARE BACK TO SCHOOL...! One in three school students suffer significant back or neck pain, often thought to be caused by carrying heavy schoolbags, Victorian studies found. Almost half the students carried bags weighing more than 10% of their body weight the recommended maximum for growing kids.... For a 4050kg high school student, 10% of their body weight is 45kg. By the time you add in textbooks, laptop, notepads, a pencil case, lunchbox, water bottle, sports gear and project work, a measly five kilos is a tough limit to keep to. ...................................................................................................... SOME TIPS - I thought you'd never ask!...... 1. A child's school bag should always be carried over both shoulders. 2. Pack your bags properly. Before the kids leave home, make sure the heavier items are towards the child's spine and lighter items towards the front of the bag. 3. The bag shouldn't extend past the shoulders when the child sits down. 4. The bag should not be wider than their chest. 5. Custom fitting bags are always better.. - A moulded frame and/or an adjustable hip or waist strap, so most of the weight rests on the hips and pelvis, not on the shoulders and spine. The waist/hip belt is particularly important to secure the load when walking, running or cycling. - Compression straps at the sides to draw the load together and bring it close to the child's back. - Shoulder straps should be adjusted so the child doesn't have to lean forward and the base of the pack rests on their hips, not on the bum. ...................................................................................................... As a parent, noticing any changes to your child's spine/posture should be dealt with as soon as possible. Things such as one shoulder higher than the other could suggest a scoliosis. Osteopathy may help with the management of such conditions and help to "nip things in the bud" early on. We can offer advice on posture and necessary strength exercises for your child's wellbeing. Please do not hesitate to contact us at the clinic or visit our website for more information... www.morelandosteo.com.au

19.01.2022 Direct from CSIRO: To improve our understanding of SARS-CoV-2, we studied the survival rates of the infectious virus on six common surfaces. We conducted the experiment at three different temperatures, 20C, 30C and 40C.... Our knowledge that the virus survives longer at colder temperatures may help to explain the spread of SARS-CoV-2 in environments such as meat processing facilities. Our findings reinforce the message that you should avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth and keep washing your hands. More: https://blog.csiro.au/covid19-virus-surfaces/ #COVID19 #Coronavirus

13.01.2022 Chronic Pelvic Pain - By Dr. Helina Vunderl-Messis (Osteopath) Chronic Pelvic Pain (CCP) mostly affects women and may be related but is not limited to endometriosis, ovarian cysts, overactive pelvic floor muscles, irritable bowel syndrome and interstitial cystitis Osteopathic philosophy embraces an approach to wellness through knowledge of interrelationships of structure and function and the combination of mind, body and spirit. ... My experience treating CPP is that everyone, female or male, presents differently. There is not one single text-book presentation. This is what makes CPP a complex phenomenon. When treating CPP I will ALWAYS consider the neuromuscular and nervous systems contribution to pain given their input to various organs and systems of the body as seen on image 2. You can also expect me to work with your diaphragm, pelvic floor muscles and joints. This form of osteopathic manipulative treatment is said to be a valuable addition to CPP management, with conjunction of additional modalities including by not limited to exercise, short-term medication and lifestyle changes. CPP management should also include good sleep, limited refined sugars, gluten and dairy, mindfulness practices and good toilet habits. To book an appointment with Dr. Helina Vunderl-Messis contact Sofie at the clinic on 9386 4780, or alternatively book in online at www.morelandosteo.com.au #alliedhealthprofessional #chronicpelvicpain #CPP #endometriosis #osteopathy #osteopathicmanipulativetreatment #autonomicnervoussystem #parasympatheticnervoussystem #sympatheticnervoussystem #osteopath #osteopathic #chronicillness #pelvicpain #IBS #PCOS #mindfullness #pelvicfloor #gynaecology #reproductivesystem #digestivesystem #genitalia #alliedhealth References: Khan, A., 2015. 11.01.2022 WHAT'S ALL THAT RECENT BUZZ ON BACK PAIN? Recent research from 'the Lancet' series has shown that back pain is poorly managed and treated. Hundred's of millions of patients are given pointless drugs, surgeries and injections and prescribed harsh and dangerous opioids. Back pain is currently the world's most leading cause of disability and has increased worldwide by 54% between 1990 to 2015, and getting worse due to the ageing population!... The recent article has shown many things, however the one we find most relatable here at Moreland Osteopathy, is that exercise are one of the only things that actually help with Chronic back pain! In fact, it was stated that "remaining active, exercising, maintaining a healthy weight, staying at work and psychological help" were the few factors that assisted patients with their chronic back pain. If you are unsure where to start, the team here, at Moreland Osteopathy are able to assist your recovery and back pain with a tailored exercise program to you, and your particular needs. From a beginner to a more advanced program, we have you covered! At Moreland Osteopathy we believe exercise rehabilitation is a vital key in assisting your Chronic back pain recovery. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call us on 9386 4780 or visit our website for more information. www.morelandosteo.com.au
