10.01.2022 Nazaaray Bangles Pinot Noir 2016, released this week, will help to save the Bengal tiger population - by turning wine into water! The wine is dedicated to Bangles, a young tigress, who as the runt of her litter, struggled for survival in 2016. Now over three years old, she roams wild in her majestic glory in Ranthambore, India. 10.01.2022 Nazaaray Estate is owned by winemaker Paramdeep (or Param) Ghumman and his doctor wife Nirmal, who came to Australia in 1981 from India. In 1991, while still living in Melbourne Param and Nirmal bought 50 acres of cattle farmland on the Mornington Peninsula. It was on a hillside, exposed to the wind from all directions and overlooked the verdant landscape and wildlife haven of Greens Bush which is part of the State Peninsula forest reserve. "The land exceeded our budget and o...ur wildest expectations. We had no idea what we would do with it," says Param. They looked at crops such as olives, fruit trees and specialty produce such as pomegranate, but Paramdeep kept coming back to the dream of creating his own vineyard. The Mornington Peninsula is a region becoming known throughout the world for the cool maritime climate wines of great elegance, finesse, and intensity of flavour. His son said he was having a mid-life crisis, his wife said he was mad, and a prominent vigneron took one look at the windswept acreage, immediately agreed with his wife and told him to buy land with vines already planted on it. "But in your mid-life crisis you do what your heart tells you, not your head," says Param, who enrolled in a six-month evening course on viticulture (the first of many wine courses), then established Nazaaray (beautiful visions) Estate as the Mornington Peninsula's southern-most vineyard. Its location and largely North South orientation encourage a long, slow ripening season which produces fruit of outstanding quality and high natural acidity. In 1996, Param planted 10 rows of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris (he was one of the pioneers of this variety in Australia), Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, tried different trellising methods and vine spacing, and buried himself in research about cool climate varieties. Nowadays just six acres are planted to Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah, and approximately 900+ cases of wine are produced each year. www.nazaaray.com.au

05.01.2022 Just 4 more rows to wrap down and winter pruning for 2019 will come to an end! What a relief! The above video shows two of the rows of Pinot Gris vines that were planted in 1996. They have been cane pruned and wrapped down on the cordon wire. Now we have to wait for spring and the excitement of vintage in 2020.
