25.01.2022 #OnThisDay 20th March 1897, Mortdales original railway station officially opened after construction had commenced on 11th January of the same year. Our first r...ailway station was located on the southern side of the Morts Rd railway crossing adjacent to George Street. The station comprised of two timber platforms and waiting sheds with the railway line passing through the centre This railway station only lasted 25 years before our present day single island platform and Ellen Subway opened on 14th September, 1922. The Illawarra railway line would have another three new stations included between Mortdale and Central. Nine years later Banksia Station opened on 21 October 1906, then Allawah Station on 25 October 1925 and the newest being Wolli Creek Station which opened on 21 May 2000. 02.01.2022 Happy 40th Birthday to the Eastern Suburbs Railway! After nearly a century of debate, planning & construction, the line from Central to Bondi Junction was op...ened by Premier Neville Wran on 23 June 1979. The ESR included new viaducts at Woolloomooloo & Rushcutters Bay, new underground platforms at Redfern, Central & Town Hall, & four new underground stations at Martin Place, Kings Cross, Edgecliff & Bondi Junction The architectural vision was ambitious, resulting in highly modern stations that broke the mould of traditional Australian railway design Innovative magnetic strip ticketing and turnstile barriers were introduced on the ESR - the first time used on the NSW rail network!
