15.01.2022 Varicose, reticular and spider veins are three related types of venous disease that may occur when veins become distended due to a 'backflow' of pooled blood. Weakness in the walls of the vein and associated problems with the valves that normally help keep the blood moving in one direction are typically responsible for this. Distended veins are often called 'incompetent' because they are no longer functioning properly. Depending on the location and extent of the problem, one ...or more of these three types of incompetent veins may be present at the same time, but may not necessarily be visible. In many cases when it appears that only spider veins are present there can be underlying incompetence in the larger superficial veins that is causing the problem. Whilst there are no definitive causes, there are several factors that may play a role in vein incompetency: 1) A strong family history of varicose veins can be one of the main indicators of a potential pre-disposition to the condition. 2) The female hormones associated with puberty, pregnancy and menopause are another cause. This is why varicose veins are much more common in women than in men. 3) Other factors that may be involved include ageing, occupations involving a lot of standing, obesity, lack of mobility, previous venous thrombosis and leg injury. Incompetent veins can cause symptoms such as leg pain and aching, heaviness, fatigue, throbbing, cramping and burning. In severe cases varicose veins can result in complications such as ulcers, bleeding, inflammation, skin rash and blood clots. Early treatment is important to reduce the risk of these complications occurring or getting worse. Because these veins are not working properly, your general circulation will be improved once incompetent veins have been treated. Prior to any treatment Dr Wright will perform a full diagnosis of your veins to determine which are incompetent and can plan your procedure accordingly. Feel free to contact our friendly staff at Moruya Surgical to discuss your options.

12.01.2022 Stasis Dermatitis What is stasis dermatitis (venous eczema, gravitational dermatitis)? Stasis dermatitis is also called gravitational dermatitis, venous eczema, and venous stasis dermatitis. It happens when there is a problem with circulation in the veins, generally in the lower legs. These problem veins cause pressure to build up as the blood tries to flow upward through the body and heart. This pressure makes fluid leak out of the veins and into the skin....Continue reading

03.01.2022 Varicose Veins - Prevention. There is an important difference between support stockings, which basically provide one level of compression the whole way up the leg, and graduated compression stockings, which provide greater compression at the ankle and less compression as they go up. Graduated compression stockings are typically used in the management of varicose veins as this pressure gradient helps to move blood up and out of the leg. Dr Wright can advise you on the most app...ropriate level of compression for your condition. Compression stockings may help to relieve symptoms and delay progression, however they cannot address the underlying cause even with good compliance. If your veins are continuing to cause you problems, make an appointment to speak with Dr Wright about what treatment options may be appropriate for you. Varicose veins can cause a range of complications and should be taken seriously. Left untreated, varicose veins do carry medical risks. If the leak in these veins is severe, over time it can cause inflammation to the surrounding skin. If you are experiencing vein pain, avoid exposure to excessive heat e.g. hot tubs, spas, or saunas. Heat increases inflammation and swelling of the vein. Varicose veins are large and can become fragile. Excessive heat can rupture the veins and cause heavy bleeding inside the leg.
