25.01.2022 A very big thank you to the people of Millicent who donated We are all very touched at the support and generosity shown and these donations will go a long way to help the animals (stock, domestic and wild) and their owners in our community that have or will be affected by the ongoing fire emergency.

25.01.2022 We are experiencing issues with our phone lines this morning. We apologize and are working to get this fixed. Should 44742532 not work please try 44742445 or 44745512 to contact us.

24.01.2022 In light of the recent INSIGHT episode Veterinarian Crisis Camille and Janelle would like to say thanks to you, to our amazing team of vets, nurses and receptionists, and to all of the Vet teams across Australia. Without our fabulous team in particular our vets, your phone calls, your requests for free advice and your need for guidance while making your heartbreaking decisions would all go unanswered. To our vets for taking the clinic phone home with you into your families,... for answering those 2am calls, for tirelessly striving to fix every sick animal and for standing beside every grieving pet owner, you are all superheroes. Unfortunately, nearly every team member at MVH has at some stage been on the receiving end of behaviour like this discussed in this episode. They have been spoken to and treated like no human or animal should and to this we say this is not ok. To our wonderful loyal MVH clients we say thank you for being you and for treating our vets and our entire team like they should be, like the incredible people that they are. See more

24.01.2022 How to collect manure for a faecal Egg count. A growing resistance to dewormers is an issue concerning stock owners today, a faecal exam to see if your parasite control program is working makes sense. Collecting a manure sample is easy, but it must be done properly to ensure accurate test results. Basically, the fresher the sample the more accurate the results. 1. Using disposable gloves or a plastic bag over your hand, collect 2 balls of manure (horses) or about half a cup f...or sheep, goats etc. 2. Place manure in to a zip-lock bag (lunch bag) and squeeze out excess air before zipping closed. Alternatively, you can use a sterile jar. 3. Label another zip lock bag with date, owners name and animals name and place bagged sample in to it. 4. Store in a cool place - refrigerator - Do not freeze. 5. Deliver your sample to us within 24 hours. Dont leave the sample in the sun, warm shed or car. Extreme cold or heat can kill parasites, defeating the purpose of collecting a sample. We will also need the animals deworming status: ie when was the animal last wormed and the product used. See more

21.01.2022 COVID-19 Update 18.3.20 We would like to advise our clients that until otherwise advised we are open as normal and we are not experiencing any issues with medical or pet food supplies. However, in order to continue to provide complete veterinary care it is important for staff to remain healthy.... With this in mind we have implemented the following policies: 1. Please use the hand sanitisers located at Reception 3. Please ph ahead for prescription orders or orders for food, worming and tick/flea prevention to minimise wait times. 4. Please observe the no handshake protocol as recommended by the World Health Organisation. This situation is rapidly changing and we will provide updates as required. Thank you for your cooperation

17.01.2022 The Celtic Barber Rothwell Queensland. These people have been tireless in their fundraising and product collection efforts and have made a number of trips to the south coast from Queensland to distribute along the South Coast. Theyve collected from a wide variety of places including veterinary hospitals which has been extremely helpful. We have been able to distribute what we cant use to local wildlife carers. celticbarberrothwell

15.01.2022 WHAT IS A PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE? This is a medicine that government experts have identified as carrying special risks in use or requiring special knowledge in selection and use. This category includes most antibiotics, hormones, analgesics, anaesthetics and anti-inflammatories. An example of special knowledge or special risks in use might include the risk of development of antibiotic resistance, the risk of residues in food animals, the risk of residues in racing anim...als, the risk of untoward effects, and drug interactions. WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THESE MEDICATIONS AND DUTY OF CARE? Duty of care broadly refers to the ethical and legal requirements for the veterinarian to exercise appropriate judgement to treat your animal based on education and experience. It also refers to determining whether a condition has proceeded further than at the last visit, to determine the cause where possible and advise on all possible means of control. If a veterinarian sold a prescription medicine without examination (except in a few exceptional circumstances) the veterinarian would be failing their duty of care. WHY CANT I PURCHASE THE MEDICINE OVER THE COUNTER - ITS JUST FOR A DOG? The legal restrictions associated with prescription medicines are attached to the medicine not the patient. The requirements for prescribing the medicine are the same whether its for human or animal use. BUT THE VET HAS SEEN THIS BEFORE IN MY ANIMAL - WHY CANT I JUST TREAT AS BEFORE? Regretfully, what looks the same isnt always the same. By examining your pet regularly (minimum 6 monthly) the veterinarian can monitor your pets progress and alter medication or management protocols as needed. See more

14.01.2022 Due to a washing machine malfunction we are in short supply of towels and blankets. If you have any you can spare we would really appreciate them. You can drop them off at either the Tuross clinic (9am - 1pm Thurs) or at the Moruya Clinic. Thank you

14.01.2022 Due to the current fire emergency the clinic will only be open on an on call basis for animal emergencies until Monday 6th January. Please everyone stay safe.

14.01.2022 Can an old dog learn new tricks? Absolutely! Old dogs can not only learn new tricks but they thrive when trained. Older dogs without house-training experience as puppies can successfully be house-trained. As long as a dog is mentally and physically capable of learning to perform a behaviour and is properly motivated, its entirely possible to train him.

13.01.2022 What a start to the year its been. Wed like to thank our clients for their patience and understanding while we work our way through this current crisis. We will be closed over the Easter break but as usual will have a vet on call for emergencies. Stay safe and enjoy your Easter break, see you all again next Tuesday!!!!!

09.01.2022 Urine marking or ...... something more serious. Though cats sometimes use urine to mark their territory, frequent urination outside the litterbox can be the first sign of anxiety or even a serious illness - especially in a previous litter box user. These illnesses include, urinary tract infection, bladder stones or even diabetes or renal failure. If your cat goes outside the box once or twice, keep a closer eye on him for the next few days. But, if hes having frequent accidents, making numerous trips to the litterbox, howling or meowing while urinating, seems unable to urinate or has blood in the urine, make an appointment with your veterinarian right away.

08.01.2022 A special shout out to the Millicent Veterinary Clinic community. We were blown away by your generosity. The money you raised helped our community a great deal and was used for treatments and medications for pets whos owners had lost their homes in the fires. We have so far been able to help over 30 animals with this fund. Although we received a lot of donations of medications and products (which was great) it was very helpful to have the money to be able to support clients whos animals needed something more specific. 07.01.2022 DEW CLAWS Most dogs have four digits with nails on their feet and hind paws, but some have a fifth digit called the dew claw, on the inner side of their leg, near the paw. Its like our thumb. Dew claws are common on the forelegs, but some dogs also have them on the hind legs. You need to keep an eye on these nails, as they dont touch the ground and dont get worn down from running around. These claws need to be trimmed from time to time to stop them from growing very long, curling back around and burying into your dogs legs. Sometimes dew claws are removed completely if they are prone to getting caught and are causing pain to the dog.

06.01.2022 Cuteness overload - a young feathertail glider - only 5 grams and 4.5 cm long, who had taken refuge in a laundry after being blown away in the wind last night. He's healthy and is with a carer today and will be released in to the same area probably this evening.

03.01.2022 Today we had a bale of eastern long necked turtles currently being treated for shell damage by our vets come in for their health check and a feed. Did you know a group of turtles can be referred to as a bale, a dole, a nest or a turn. The difference between a turtle and a tortoise is that turtles live in or near water and tortoises only go to water to drink. Australia has no native land tortoises - only marine and freshwater/terrestrial turtles.

02.01.2022 Rat bait acts as an anticoagulant (prevents clotting of the blood) by depleting the body's supply of Vitamin K. It can take anything from 1 to 5 days days after ingestion to begin to see the signs of intoxication. Signs of intoxication with ratbait can range from pin point haemorrhages on the gums to frank bleeding from anywhere. When our clotting system is not working these minute traumas are not repaired and continue to bleed and may result in any of the following: * pa...le gums or small pin point haemorrhages on the gums. * Lethargy * bruising under the skin * bleeding from the nose * continued bleeding from small wounds * vomiting and or diarrhoea * coughing or respiratory difficulties (laboured or rapid breathing) If you see your pet eating, or notice signs that your pet may have eaten rat bait it is important to bring them straight to the vet. If you have a box of bait, bring this with you. Treatment for rat bait poisoning is with Vitamin K and if the condition is caught early enough is usually effective. Poisons and pets don't mix, not to mention the damage done to our local wildlife. Owls, eagles, kookaburras and snakes will readily eat any slow moving or even dead rat or mouse that they find. 02.01.2022 ITS DESEXING MONTH. we are giving a 25% discount on all routine dog, cat and rabbit desexings for the month of July. Please call 4474 2532 for an appointment.

02.01.2022 Ticks As we are now coming into the warmer months of the year, tick prevention in our pets is so important. We have recently seen a spike in the number of tick cases in both dogs and cats in past few weeks and unfortunately many of these cases have been severe. Early signs of tick paralysis include a loss of function in the hind end, a change in vocalisation, retching / vomiting, and a loss of appetite. Signs of tick paralysis progression include complete paralysis of all 4 l...imbs, and laboured or rapid breathing. If you find a tick on your pet, call the vet immediately and remove with a tick twister if you have one. If you are unable to find the tick, keep your pet calm and comfortable. Continue to search for a tick and pay particular attention to the neck, face and ears. Do not offer any food or water and your pet may not be able to swallow properly. The best way to prevent your pet from tick paralysis is to use tick prevention. We have many products in clinic available, including Nexgard or Bravecto for both dog & cats. Dr Lucy Bowen

01.01.2022 Its been an eventful and emotional couple of months for all of us on the South Coast. Today well be sending out a few thank you messages to organisations and people who have helped us care for our clients, animals and wildlife. First and foremost wed like to thank our clients for your understanding and patience over the last couple of months. You truly are a special bunch!!!!!

01.01.2022 Feeding your senior dog. The older dog will need a good, well balanced diet that is lower in calories, but still has adequate protein, fat and fibre. Specially formulated senior diets are lower in calories and help to create a feeling of fullness. Some of the premium brands also have glucosamine and omega 3 & 6 added for older joints. Senior dogs are more prone to constipation, so added fibre (or a tablespoon of mashed pumpkin) can help with this. Dogs with arthritis can have... trouble getting into the right position to evacuate, the added fibre can help bulk the stools a little which makes it easier for the dog to go. Adding vegetables is good practice at any age. Some older dogs will no longer eat a full meal once a day, so changing to two smaller meals may help. If you are planning on changing the food your dog is eating, do it slowly over a week or so to avoid an upset tummy. Always check with your vet before giving supplements as the food you are feeding may be adequate. Depending on the dogs diet, some supplements may be an unnecessary purchase and in some cases can even harm if given to dogs with specific dietary requirements. Most importantly, if your dog is losing weight and not eating well, he will need to have a health check with your vet. See more
