25.01.2022 15th of October is International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day The Mothers Milk Bank most often receives donated milk from mothers who are breastfeeding their own healthy babies. However sometimes grieving mothers donate as well as despite the loss of their babies their bodies continue to produce milk. In our experience with assisting families that wish to donate their breastmilk after such tragedy, the act of pumping and donating has been reported to be a way o...f reflecting on their loss, honouring their baby and having the opportunity to help save the lives of other babies in need. It is important to note that this may not be the choice of every bereavement family, we respect everyones choice and we are always happy to guide and assist each family. TODAY WE HONOUR AND REMEMBER THE BABIES BORN SLEEPING, THOSE WE CARRIED BUT NEVER HELD, THOSE WE HELD BUT COULD NOT TAKE HOME & THOSE WHO CAME HOME BUT COULD NOT STAY.

25.01.2022 Dear Karleen, you are so correct! The Mothers Milk Bank Charity is educating hospitals and encouraging all maternity wards to have pasteurized donor human milk for theses babies in need. Having access to pasteurized donor human milk promotes positive impact on exclusive breastfeeding rates and avoids unnecessary medical treatments. We wont stop fighting for the best nutrition possible a baby can have! Thank you so much for everything you do! Babies deserve the best nutrition possible from the start! www.mothersmilkbank.com.au

22.01.2022 URGENT: Donations for the Human Milk Emergency Reserve Mothers Milk Bank Charity urgently calls for donations to establish a human milk emergency reserve. This reserve is of particular relevance for vulnerable communities, where the feeding of infant formula in the presence of pathogen exposure leads to a 5-6 times higher mortality in infants under 2 months (Lancet 2008, see below). This figure is close to that seen following the 2009 swine flu pandemic when Indigenous Aust...ralians, made up 11% of all identified cases and had a six-fold death rate compared with non-Indigenous Australians[across all age groups]and recently drawn attention to by Dawn Casey, the deputy CEO of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation. There is currently no provision for infants in the community. NSW Health [as is the case in all other states] is focussed on providing pasteurised donor human milk to vulnerable premature babies, those born less than 32 weeks gestational age or of a very low birth weight (i.e. <1500 grams). The human milk emergency reserve gives food security to newborn infants in need of breastmilk. The stock needs to be accrued BEFORE the emergency. @mothersmilkbank_australia #mothersmilkbank #mothersmilkbankaustralia #humanmilkforhumanbabies #breastmilk #mothersmilk #breastisbest #breastfeeding #babies #donate #receive #antibodies #nutrition #nutritionforbabies #healthybabies #savinglives #savingbabies #donor #prematurebabies #neurologicaldevelopment #helpingbabies #donorbreastmilk #breastmilkdonor #breastmilkaustralia #donatenow #urgent See more

17.01.2022 Gold Coast mother Jazmin Merchant-Woodfords was eager to breastfeed but had delayed milk production when Grayson was delivered early at a smaller than the normal birth weight. Gold Coast Healths Waijungbah Jarjums midwifery service had guided Jazmin through her pregnancy and suggested donor breast milk could help. Waijungbah Jarjums organised access to the milk straight away so he got the colostrum right after he was born. I am still able to access the donations and give G...rayson top-ups after I breastfeed. 15.01.2022 Why Breastmilk is Important... Breastmilk feeding is the biological norm and breastmilk is a perfectly balanced source of nutrition. It is a living substance, more complex than blood, and it contains a variety of nutrient and immunological factors that cannot be replicated. It is instantly absorbed and with positive immediate and long term health outcomes, it is the most beneficial food for infants. Although its contents vary and are constantly changing, breastmilk contains a...ctive antibodies which protect newborns from a variety of infections and diseases. It ensures optimum physical and neurological development and assists in the treatment of allergies and feeding intolerance, immunologic deficiencies and inborn errors of metabolism. The World Health Organisation and UNICEF support donor milk as the first alternative where mothers milk is not available. Screening and pasteurising donated human milk ensures the absence of infection and disease. The nutritional content and benefits of donated breast milk are maintained however, due to the processes and pasteurisation techniques employed at the Mothers Milk Bank. @mothersmilkbank_australia #mothersmilkbank #mothersmilkbankaustralia #humanmilkforhumanbabies #breastmilk #mothersmilk #breastisbest #breastfeeding #babies #donate #receive #antibodies #nutrition #nutritionforbabies #healthybabies #savinglives #savingbabies #donor #prematurebabies #neurologicaldevelopment #helpingbabies #donorbreastmilk #breastmilkdonor #breastmilkaustralia

05.01.2022 So beautiful and so courageous. The Mothers Milk Bank Charity has supported many mothers that wanted to donate their milk in such hard time. We honor and thank you for your kindness. Great article

04.01.2022 A note from Lynne Hall - Director of Mothers' Milk Bank Charity, Endorsed Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) I am delighted to have the opportunity to work as one of the directors of the Mothers' Milk Bank Charity. I am passionate about helping mothers breastfeed and provide breast milk to their babies. Volunteering at the charity means I can also help parents who aren't breastfeeding access donor breast milk. Since becoming more actively... involved in the charity earlier this year, we have not turned anyone away wanting donor milk. We have helped parents with premature babies receive milk and also several dads returning from overseas with their babies. This was especially rewarding to be able to deliver milk to hotels while the families quarantined for 2 weeks. It is wonderful to be able to help families regardless of their situation and provide donor breast milk as their preferred option to infant formula. It is also heartwarming to listen to the stories from mothers who generously help the charity by donating their spare breast milk. I love what I do as a midwife and lactation consultant and look forward to be helping more donors and recipients of breast milk through the charity. #mothersmilkbankaustralia #breastmilk #humanmilkforhumanbabies #donormilk #nutritionforbabies #antibodies #neurologicaldevelopment #breastmilkaustralia

04.01.2022 Production It is so important for women to have an understanding of how our breasts make milk. Our breasts contain clusters of cells called Alveoli. Milk production occurs within those cells. After birth our brain releases Oxytocin and Prolactin when we birth the placenta, and baby snuggles with us and begins nursing. The receptors inside the Alveoli pick up on the Prolactin and then begin producing milk within themselves!... When baby breastfeeds, Oxytocin is released which squeezes the Alveoli and causes milk to come down get out through our milk ducts. This is often referred to as a let-down. Pretty amazing, huh? As we continue our breastfeeding journey our milk supply becomes more driven on supply and demand. When the Alveoli are filled with milk they change shape which stop them from being receptive to Prolactin. But when the cells empty during breastfeeding or pumping, they go back to their regular shape and this allows Prolactin to re-enter and signal them to make more milk! This is the science behind why we often remind women that empty breasts make milk faster! repost @thenaturalparentmagazine @doulalyndsay @mothersmilkbank_australia #mothersmilkbank #mothersmilkbankaustralia #humanmilkforhumanbabies #breastmilk #mothersmilk #breastisbest #breastfeeding #babies #donate #receive #antibodies #nutrition #nutritionforbabies #healthybabies #savinglives #savingbabies #donor #prematurebabies #neurologicaldevelopment #helpingbabies #donorbreastmilk #breastmilkdonor #breastmilkaustralia #lactation #breastfeeding #breastmilk #breastfeedingisbeautiful #birth #love #doula #lactationconsultant
