05.01.2022 As a child care centre owner, it can be difficult to find the line between being 'nice and friendly' and being the boss and ensuring what needs to happen, does happen! Managing the team to ensure they are working cohesively together for the common good of the children can be challenging. Running a child care centre means you are looking after your customers most precious family members. It's a fine line that you must navigate and it's not for just anyone. You must be compass...ionate to the children, their parents and your employees. You're in the game of 'keeping people happy' But how do you keep people happy when they have their own thoughts, agendas and opinions? It's like you also need to be a mind reader! It's about maximising the impact from your effort and not dividing yourself into too many pieces. As they say, 'you can't give from an empty cup'. So, the required effort is significantly reduced when you have a team that are on the same page and working together. Whilst there are many factors that impact the team dynamic, there is one VERY important one than can help with finding the fine line between being nice and being the boss! That is, setting clear expectations with two specific documents: A very clear and documented Job Description A Staff Handbook (including all your other expectations that don't fit into the Job Description - ie: Being on time, how to call in sick - essentially everything else that annoys you) Once you have these two documents, then you can be the 'fun nice boss' whilst they are meeting expectations, and when they don't, you have something to refer to, to hold them accountable!
