20.01.2022 FAMILY REUNION (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are advised that the following post contains names and images of persons who have passed). An unexpected outcome following the sharing of a post about the 'Call of Country' display currently in the library was a family reunion.... The display represents the thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who responded to the ‘Call of Country’ over the past century, volunteering and serving in all Australian conflicts. Library customer Lee Gilbert discovered that 'Uncle Barney' featured in the display. She and other family members shared and tagged our post, reaching many relatives across the country. Respects were sent to Sergaent Albert Bernard Clothier's son Michael Clothier who met up with family members in the library and others making the trip from further afield on another day. 'Dad was a hard but fair man. Even though we were not rich, we had plenty of love in the house...dad was always involved in his kids sports, always encouraging and proud of all our deeds'. Thank you for sharing your special memories and family time. The display will be in the library until 2pm Friday 27 November 2020. Please contact the History Trust of SA for details about borrowing the display: https://history.sa.gov.au/

20.01.2022 SNAKE SEASON HEATS UP With the warm weather, there has been plenty of recent snake sightings. Expect to see more over the coming months even in urban settings. Snakes will often seek shelter and food around homes, so take care to clean up rubbish, seed or grain near bird feeders or chicken coops. ... If you see a snake on your freshly cut lawn, please do not approach or scare them away as they may be basking or just travelling through. When out and about, always be aware of snakes and keep dogs on leads for their own safety. Always stick to paths and tracks especially around creeks and wetlands. Remember snakes are protected and part of our environment. They’re more frightened of you, if you see one please do not intimidate it or they may see you as a threat and attack. Exploring for kids is fun and education is very important, ‘if you see a snake, don’t go near it’. If one is hanging around your property, call a local licensed snake catcher to safely remove and relocate it.

19.01.2022 AVENUE OF HONOUR KEITH STEPHENSON PARK The new Avenue of Honour constructed by Mount Barker District Council was officially rededicated by the Governor of South Australia His Excellency, The Honourable Mr Hieu Van Le, AC on Sunday 15 November 2020. This is the first official re-commissioning of a replanted Avenue of Honour in Australia.... The new avenue of 76 Magnolia grandiflora complete with bollards and plaques for each tree is located in the heart of Mount Barker in Keith Stephenson Park. Seventy-three trees represent a soldier or air force crewman from Mount Barker who served and did not return home, mostly from World War One and Two but also the Korean and Vietnam wars. There are three additional trees provided to recognise the medical personnel, a tree for the animals which were sent into military service from Mount Barker and a tree for the dedication of the avenue. The original avenue from the early nineteen twenties was located along Wellington Road Mount Barker and was officially decommissioned in 2013. The new avenue has been constructed over a period of time with funds from Council and community donations. The first new trees were planted in 2014 and the last in 2020. The RSL arranged the new plaques with a Centenary of ANZAC monument grant from the Federal Government.

19.01.2022 WELLINGTON ROAD AND VICTORIA ROAD INTERSECTION UPGRADE DECOMMISSIONED AVENUE OF HONOUR TREES The first stage of the upgrade process in preparation for construction of a roundabout involves the removal of seven Desert Ash trees along Wellington Road that formed part of the Wellington Road Avenue of Honour which was decommissioned in 2013. These trees have suffered from gradual erosion over the years due to overhead powerlines, the redevelopment of the road and work to impro...ve local business access. To ensure that the Avenue of Honour endures and can continue to flourish, it has been recommissioned by local and state RSL in Keith Stephenson Park with Bull Bay Magnolia trees which have very attractive evergreen foliage and majestic white flowers symbolic of a celebrated life. Recently the memorial plaques were installed on bollards next to each magnolia and the Avenue of Honour officially opened so it can be enjoyed for generations to come. 18.01.2022 THE ASTERIX LADY Known as 'The Asterix Lady', library customer Julie just can't get enough of this graphic novel series by Rene Goscinny. Julie owns several books herself and regularly borrows more from the public library system. "I love these books as they are always funny but also very clever as they do spark off a lot of general knowledge and present real history facts", explained Julie. "They are not just for children although that is the perception because they are in c...omic form". Julie is quite accomplished, having recently completed an Honours degree after undertaking a Bachelor of Languages in French and Spanish at the University of Adelaide. Hence her personal collection of Asterix in both languages. She discovered the books while living and studying in France and read them as a way of de-stressing. Congratulations Julie and we look forward to catching up when you come in to get your next lot of Asterix books.

06.01.2022 GET DOWN LOW AND GO...GO...GO! That was the message that Fireman Phil from the Metropolitan Fire Service came to the library to share with nearly 200 local primary school students who came in to hear a special story time as part of Book Week celebrations. The students were dressed as favourite story book characters and we had several Harry Potters, a pirate, a couple of Wallys, a Spiderman, a cowboy, a mummy, a Minecrafter, fairies and even a Yoda visiting us today.... Phil read 'Fire Dog Kitt Gets his Badge' by John Laverick, a story that explains what training is carried out in a metro fire station. Phil then talked about good and bad fires and fire safety at home. Several keen and eager children jumped at the opportunity to volunteer and help Phil demonstrate how to escape a smoke filled room. Phil encourage the children to be 'fire safety monitors' at home and gave out colouring books and fire safety brochures to take home to spread the important messages learnt today. Thank you to Phil and the SA Metropolitan Fire Service for being part of this special story time.

02.01.2022 PREPARING YOUR RURAL PROPERTY Getting a rural property ready for the Fire Danger Season can take time and often needs to fit around other competing priorities. But there are things you can do now to reduce the threat. A bushfire action plan is very important and should include the following practices:... Clear vegetation and fine fuels (grass, leaves, needles etc) to 20m around a dwelling Prune branches on trees near the house and sheds to more than 2m from the ground to prevent ladder fuels Mow or create mineral earth breaks around properties and paddock boundaries Mow or graze paddocks close to the house early in the season Keep lawns irrigated and mown to 10cm through the summer season Stack hay in separate sheds or well away from homes Have an auxiliary water supply including pumps and hoses that can reach around all structures and test prior to and regularly during the Fire Danger Season. When preparing your bushfire property plan, please consider your neighbours and how you might communicate in an emergency (eg phone list or UHF channel). https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/p/prepare-your-home-and-property/

01.01.2022 ARE YOU READY FOR THE FIRE DANGER SEASON? Being bushfire ready was the topic of recent community events held by CFS and Council. Getting your property ready for the Fire Danger Season might be the most important thing you do. A well prepared home is more likely to survive a bushfire than one that hasn't been prepared. Make a checklist and remember to: ... Mow and maintain all grass to 10cm within 20m of dwellings Clean out gutters of all leaves and fine burnable material Prune tree branches near structures by at least 5m and at least 2m from the ground to prevent ladder fuels (vegetation that allows a fire to climb up from the landscape) Cover all gaps in roofs and walls to stop embers entering (any space bigger than 5mm). One of the most important things is to prepare your personal and property bushfire survival plan and to always implement your bushfire survival plan early on days of heightened fire danger. https://www.cfs.sa.gov.au/p/prepare-your-home-and-property/
