25.01.2022 Wander This song speaks of drifting away from your true north in terms of losing your way from the things that centre your soul; moving away from the philos...ophies that guide your beliefs. For Aboriginal people, this is the Land and Country for which they belong. The land has a deep connection to Aboriginal people, and the fire place is where all our stories and learning takes place. No matter how far you may drift away from your centre, always try to find your way home. 'Wander' performed by our Traditional and Cultural Fire Officer Japanangka Payirntarri Clifton Bieundurry, was chosen to reflect the 2020 theme of NAIDOC Week ‘Always Was, Always Will Be’ as a special tribute to DFES and the work we do. The song details the cultural connection with Country and importance of fire, and how fire can represent the place of gathering and learning.

19.01.2022 BEHIND THE PHOTO A Critical Care Paramedic suspended in mid-air reaches for the outstretched hands of Marine Rescue volunteers from Jurien Bay, to draw him ...safely onto the moving vessel. With two RAC Rescue Helicopters based in WA but more than a thousand Marine Rescue volunteers, this type of exercise is frequently run off WA’s deadly coastline. Volunteers like these sacrifice thousands of hours each year to be able to save lives in situations where every second counts. DFES Incident Photographer Lewis van Bommel

15.01.2022 Slow Down, Move Over No matter which road you’re traveling down in WA, the SLOMO law requires you to slow down to 40 km/h when approaching emergency vehicles who are attending an incident. It’s as much for your safety as it is for ours.

11.01.2022 For thousands of years cultural burning has been an important part of Aboriginal land management and keeping Country healthy. The small, low-intensity fires or ...cool burns are used to minimise damage to ecosystems and landscapes The new Traditional Fire Program through the Bushfire Centre of Excellence is looking at how these practices can be incorporated into modern mitigation methods. Have you seen volunteer fire brigades burning grass trees in your area recently?

09.01.2022 Huge thank you to all members of the Brigade, Shire, Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA & of course our magnificent public for making the very first BurnSMART Workshop work in Mount Barker. It was a great success and we will be planning another on later in Autumn. Thanks again to everyone involved!

08.01.2022 Being prepared before it all goes shaped could save you a lot of time, money, or even your life. There are easy tasks that can be done throughout the year to ...better prepare you and your family for emergencies. With warmer weather already here, unfortunately bushfires are not far away. Print this simple checklist for your fridge and set aside some weekend time to ready your home and your family for an emergency.

05.01.2022 Ever wondered what it’s like to be a volunteer firefighter during summer? Tonight’s installment of Big Weather (8:30pm on ABC) will give you a taste. Our District Officer Don Fazio also features in this episode!

04.01.2022 There’s a new kid on the Emergency WA block! DFES and the Department of Health (HealthyWA) have partnered to customise the Emergency WA website (www.emergency.w...a.gov.au) to include map-based ‘human pandemic’ warnings if they’re needed. The website is now equipped to show localised outbreaks of COVID-19 and provide targeted information to communities impacted. While we hopefully don’t have to use it, this enhancement is part of the WA Government preparation for potential outbreaks of COVID-19 in WA. To help keep the community safe, remember to: Practise good hygiene and wash your hands regularly. Maintain a physical distance from others where possible. Stay home if you’re sick. If you’re experiencing symptoms, get tested immediately. Stay home and self-isolate if you are waiting for your test results.

02.01.2022 BURN NOTICE Today, Saturday 24th October 2020 between the approx times of 1pm - 9pm Mount Barker VFRS along with Middle Ward BFB, Narpyn BFB & Porongurup BFB ...will be conducting a small ‘edging’ Hazard Reduction Burn within Mondurup Reserve along Langton Road. With the extension to the Plantagenet Medical Centre there have been approx 20 large piles of dead trees and scrub piled up in the bush area surrounding the medical centre. If time and weather permits we will be burning these piles out as well. This is to reduce the risk to our town during summer. This may occur after hours during the week also. The picture below shows the area and three coloured lines- Yellow - The area being burnt. Red - Section of Langton Rd that will be closed during the burn. Blue - Detour road during the burn. Fire trucks and personnel may be visible in the days following the burn as we ensure the area is safe of reigniting. The edge being burnt will provide us a small buffer for this coming summer in the event of a wildfire impacting the town from the north west. Next Autumn a much larger section will be burnt ready for the following summer. Thank you for your cooperation.

01.01.2022 Congratulations Jeremiah Peters (Dual member Mount Barker VFRS & Mount Barker SES)

01.01.2022 ICMYI: Our Traditional Fire Program team are starting the conversation around how Aboriginal cultural burning practices could be harnessed to improve mitigation in WA.
