24.01.2022 Schools Community Fund Grant was a high note for Instrumental Music students Mount Gravatt Highs Instrumental Music cohort has been growing each year with Music Extension and Music Excellence classes, Junior Jazz, Wind, Strings and Brass Ensembles, Concert and Stage Bands. Matt Fellows, Instrumental Music Teacher, said the students contribute every day to the cultural life of our school community, performing at school and community events and the instrumental music bag rack...s would be a great addition to the department. Students were pleasantly surprised to arrive at school in Term 3 to find state of the art safe storage for their much-loved instruments. The new instrumental music bags racks, funded through a Local Schools Community Fund Grant and supported by Ross Vasta MP, Federal member for Bonner were installed over the holidays. Today, Mount Gravatt Principal Ross Robertson met with Ross Vasta MP to thank him and his office for their support. Ross Vasta commented on the excellent quality of the bag racks, which were locally built by local manufactures, saying the bag racks would be part of the Instrumental Music department for many years to come. 24.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM OUR YOUTH HEALTH NURSE Many Australians believe that bone health is something that only concerns them when they reach old age, and that osteoporosis is a disease that only affects old ladies. Strong healthy bones begin in childhood. As children get bigger, their bones grow, and it is a great time to start building the foundation for healthy bones by developing healthy diet and exercise habits. Make sure they are getting enough calcium and exercise. Exercise cou...ld be as simple as running or playing outside. Just like during childhood, teenagers should continue to consume plenty of calcium-rich foods and drinks, with their daily calcium requirement more than double that of their early years. Teenagers should also continue to exercise, strengthening their growing bones. After your twenties, your bone mass isnt able to be increased any more, but diet and exercise will still impact how you maintain or lose bone density. Even though you cant build more bone mass, its important to remember that your bones are constantly regenerating, which means they still need calcium to stay strong. For further information see your school nurse or visit: https://www.osteoporosis.org.au//files/ThematicReportSmall

22.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM OUR YOUTH HEALTH NURSE Getting enough sleep is one of the most important things you can do for your health and well-being. Sleep is like food for your brain, and getting enough sleep is important not only for your physical well-being but for your mental well-being.... Sleep is the only time that your brain recharges and processes information as well as being the only time of the day that your body gets to rest and repair. Sleep can help you feel better, think more clearly and concentrate better. It gives you energy to complete tasks and can make you more alert. Its recommended that we get 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night. If you have trouble sleeping, there a number of things you can try to help improve your sleep. However, if you still having problems sleeping, see your doctor. For further information visit: https://www.sleepfoundation.org or you could try the 21 night sleep program on the Smiling Minds app, free to download.

21.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM OUR YOUTH HEALTH NURSE Illness, injury and ageing can affect your eyesight, so its important to keep your eyes as healthy as possible. In Australia, more than 450,000 people are living with vision impairment or blindness. Some eye conditions are caused by genes or ageing. But you can reduce your risk of many eye conditions by caring for your eyes and leading a healthy lifestyle. Around 90% of all blindness and vision impairment in Australia is preventable o...r treatable if detected early. If you notice any symptoms with your eyes or any changes to your vision, you should organise an eye test or see a doctor. Regular eye tests can detect and diagnose eye problems in the early stages. Tips for keeping your eyes healthy: Eat well. Good eye health starts with the food on your plate. Wear sunglasses. Use safety eyewear. Give your eyes a break from the screen. Quit smoking. Regular eye checks. For further information visit: https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/eye-tests or see your school nurse.

17.01.2022 Sports Courts Makeover In 2020, Brisbane City Council and The Department of Education funded ten state schools to improve their sport and recreation facilities via the School Sport and Recreation Facility Upgrade Program. Mount Gravatt High School was fortunate to be one of the ten schools. The program provides financial assistance to state schools to upgrade existing school sport and recreation facilities to increase school and community use. Mount Gravatt High multi-purpo...se outdoor courts were in urgent need of an upgrade, the courts which are a significant facility and resource to the school curriculum and a popular sporting facility with other schools and clubs, were becoming unusable. Now with the upgrade, which was carried out over the recent holidays, the courts are like new. The courts meet safety standards and the new line markings are now in accordance with Australian Standards for tennis, netball and badminton. Kyle Jones A/Head of Department for HPE had the opportunity to show Krista Adams, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Holland Park Ward, the courts. Mr Jones said Mount Gravatt High was very grateful for Cr Adams support and the grant funding, as without the recent upgrade the courts would have become unusable. Cr Adams commented on the importance for schools to have safe, working sports facilities and the value of the School Sport and Recreation Facility Upgrade Program to projects such as Mount Gravatt High outdoor sports courts. Kyle Jones A/Head of Department for HPE had the opportunity to show the courts upgrade to Krista Adams, Deputy Mayor and Councillor for Holland Park Ward, pictured with students Naomi Leech and Anna Hawkins, winners of the AOCs Olympic Change Maker award for 2020. 05.01.2022 A MESSAGE FROM OUR YOUTH HEALTH NURSE Did you know alcohol consumption can negatively affect brain development? Research shows the longer a young person delays the use of alcohol, the more chance the brain has to finish developing in the vital areas of speech, emotions, reasoning, learning and memory.... What is alcohol? Alcohol is a depressant drug, which means it slows down the messages traveling between the brain and your body and affects the way you think, feel and behave. The World Health Organization (WHO) says that alcohol contributes to more than 200 different types of disease and injury with both short term use and long-term use. If you would like any further information, please visit: https://www.health.gov.au/health-topics/alcohol or talk to the School Nurse.

01.01.2022 School-based apprenticeships Connecting young people with the real world Mrs Wilson, Head of Senior Schooling was very excited yesterday to coordinate another Mount Gravatt High student to sign up to a school-based apprenticeship. Year 12 student Tom Johnson is about to commence an electrical apprenticeship while completing his secondary schooling. A school-based apprenticeship provides students with the opportunity to develop workplace skills, knowledge and confidence. Thi...s will give students like Tom a competitive edge in the job market. School-based apprenticeships and traineeships allow high school students to work for an employer one or two days a week and train towards a recognised qualification. It gives the students the opportunity to put skills learnt at school and the training organisation, into practice in a real work environment. Tom has signed up with Blue Power Electrical. Mick from Blue Power Electrical is one of many employers who take on school-based apprentices. These opportunities to Earn while you Learn can make a real difference by motivating young people to work towards their future goals and giving them realistic exposure to the industry or sector. Tom was joined by his mother, Tricia, Mick from Blue Power Electrical and Kia Smyth from MEGT to guide him through the process. We wish Tom the very best as he starts his career journey into becoming an Electrician. A big Thank you also to Blue Power Electrical for providing this opportunity for Tom. See more
