24.01.2022 With Spring just around the corner, Liz Hansman has created an article about "Wattle Day", traditionally celebrated on 1st September, but fading into obscurity these days. Perhaps this year we can rejuvenate this colourful occasion to spread a bit of joy and patriotism. .https://mtloftyhistoricalsociety.org.au/?page_id=2262

23.01.2022 #WindbackWednesday Do you recognise this nature trail? For over 150 years, Waterfall Gully has been a popular nature escape, although today it would be unusual ...to see someone hiking in a suit! The hills surrounding First Creek were once covered with open woodland vegetation, including eucalypts, casuarinas and native grasses. During autumn, the Kaurna people moved from the coastal areas to the creeks and gullies of the foothills. European settlers initially used the land around Waterfall Gully for timber cutting and sheep grazing. By the 1850s, the Gully was a popular spot for walks and picnics. It was widely referred to as Waterfall Gully by 1906. We'd love to see your pictures from the beautiful Waterfall Gully trail! Post them below Photograph courtesy of Margaret Ford. Taken circa 1912. If you're after a proper peek, you can find Rhodode...ndron magnificum, pictured here, in the Lower Rhododendron Gully along with Rhododendron spinuliferum and Rhododendron arboreum ssp delavayi. 18.01.2022 Tens of thousands of people went through work camps and migrant hostels in South Australia. Migrant hostels were also known as migrant camps, reception centres ...and holding centres. There were at least twelve hostels in South Australia between 1947 and the mid-1980s. http://sahistoryhub.com.au/s/migrant-hostels-and-work-camps View of the Glenelg migrant hostel huts, early 1960s. 16.01.2022 Perspective. Imagine you were born in 1900. On your 14th birthday, World War I starts, and ends on your 18th birthday. 22 million people perish in that war. La...ter in the year, a Spanish Flu epidemic hits the planet and runs until your 20th birthday. 50 million people die from it in those two years. Yes, 50 million. On your 29th birthday, the Great Depression begins. Unemployment hits 25%, the World GDP drops 27%. That runs until you are 33. The country nearly collapses along with the world economy. When you turn 39, World War II starts. You arent even over the hill yet. And dont try to catch your breath. On your 41st birthday, the United States is fully pulled into WWII. Between your 39th and 45th birthday, 75 million people perish in the war. At 50, the Korean War starts. 5 million perish. At 55 the Vietnam War begins and doesnt end for 20 years. 4 million people perish in that conflict. On your 62nd birthday you have the Cuban Missile Crisis, a tipping point in the Cold War. Life on our planet, as we know it, should have ended. Great leaders prevented that from happening. When you turn 75, the Vietnam War finally ends. Think of everyone on the planet born in 1900. How do you survive all of that? When you were a kid in 1985 and didnt think your 85 year old grandparent understood how hard school was. And how mean that kid in your class was. Yet they survived through everything listed above. Perspective is an amazing art, refined as time goes on, and enlightening like you wouldnt believe. Lets try and keep things in perspective." 02.01.2022 Mick Heiser sent me this photo of the Toll House from the 1940s. Driven past the old building thousands of times and never thought much about it as I suspect mo...st of us do. Strange but true it only operated for 6 years. It opened in 1841 to collect taxes for improvements to the road that went into the hills. Despite the money being raised, not a lot of improvements were made to the roads, and in 1847 after much grumbling by the road users, the toll was revoked and the Toll House was closed It's been vacant ever since, but nobody ever saw the need to pull it down. At one stage, in the late 40s, it was covered in advertising slogans and looked as if it was about to fall down. However it was decided in 1951 to restore the building and thanks to the efforts of people like the National Trust, Geographical Society and the Pioneers Association, a new coat of paint and a new roof made the Toll House look as good as new. It still stands there silently and is vacant to this day. See more

In 1841 it was... opened to collect taxes for road improvements that went into the hills, but despite money being raised very few improvements occurred (I wonder where the money went? ..Hmmmm ??) and in 1847, because of very unhappy road users, the toll was revoked and the gatekeepers were fired, and it was closed! ..srsa/pd (as requested) ..Today in comments See more
