21.01.2022 Something to consider....

20.01.2022 TONGS are a great household tool that be used to help build-up hand strength. Hand strength is vital for the development of fine motor skills. In this photo, Master Declan is demonstrating how tongs can be incorporated into play. It is also important to point out that Declan is practicing this activity in a position called half kneeling, with one knee up and one knee down which challenges his core stability. Well done Declan

20.01.2022 Indoor obstacle courses with activity stations are a great way to incorporate many gross motor skills into a therapy or play session at home. This particular course below is very biased towards working on balance. A majority of these items were purchased from Kmart and were very reasonably priced. However alternatively, everyday items from home can also be used to climb over to work on motor planning and strength or to step over to work on balance. In this photo you can also see bowling, in this circuit we completed this activity in high kneeling which is targeting core strength. Obstacle courses are only limited by your imagination, so for more ideas or information on how to do this with your child contact your therapist for tailored suggestions.

20.01.2022 Behind the scenes of tele-health. This is a Pilates style session for a 13yo client who is working on core strength and conditioning. Contact MOVEability if you are interested to find out more information! Edit: p.s. parents can join in too for their own workout

20.01.2022 These two superstars have very similar therapy goals and programs, so we seized the opportunity to do a mini-group session. This format of session was fun and social for the kids and parents alike. In this video Aaron was balancing on the buso ball, and Keira was completing high step-ups whilst both of course combined these tasks with throwing and catching for added difficulty!

19.01.2022 Hydrotherapy is back!!!

19.01.2022 Today, December 3rd, is the annual International Day of People with a Disability (IDPwD). IDPwD is a United Nations sanctioned day that is celebrated internationally. It aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability and celebrate their achievements and contributions. The Australian Government has been supporting IDPwD since 1996 and provides funds to promote and raise awareness of the day around Australia.

17.01.2022 Back in June I put a post up on FB about this legend Cooper who was 2 weeks post amputation. Now, 4 months later, Coop is out and about walking on his prothesis outdoors without crutches! In this session, Coop walked uphill, downhill, up curbs, on grass, gravel and bark chips. These subtle changes in terrain require subtle changes in our balance which for most people are automatic, but for those learning or re-learning to walk is an important component of developing safe independent mobility. Coop nailed this session and is in the midst of a rapid burst of confidence as he becomes more and more independent! This has been an absolute pleasure to watch and be apart of and I can't wait to see what happens next!! Go Coop

16.01.2022 Equipment prescription is one of the components of both our physiotherapy and occupational therapy services. In the photo below you can see David who is 7 months old who is trialling the PlayPak. The PlayPak is a super versatile and adjustable positioning system that can be used to support children in sitting, allowing the parent and or therapist to be hands free and in front to play and interact with the child. The PlayPak can also be used to assist in the development and tolerance of tummy time and subsequently the crawling position like teddy in the second picture.

14.01.2022 In home PE classes for children could come in handy very soon...

14.01.2022 Over this past weekend, I had the privilege to learn from the esteemed Dr Yvonne Burns at the University of Queensland and develop skills using the NSMDA Physiotherapy Assessment for Infants & Young Children Tool. Since the weekend, I have hit the ground running and already implemented my new found knowledge of the developing Neuro-sensory system!

14.01.2022 This is what a new beginning looks like!!! I have had the honour of working with this legend, Cooper, for exactly a year. I have seen the highs and lows that Coop has battled through. Earlier this year, Coop made the very brave decision to amputate his leg, and he is now 2 weeks post surgery. I am now filled with optimism for Coop and am super excited for this next phase. Watch this space.... great things are coming!!!!

13.01.2022 Always learning! The CP Challenge is an evidence based assessment tool to examine high level gross motor skills of children with cerebral palsy.

12.01.2022 I can't recommend this place highly enough!

12.01.2022 Why play with play dough? Because it is fun! But if you need more reasons then.. 1. Fine Motor Skill Development: great for developing hand strength needed for learning to write, use scissors fasten buttons etc... 2. Creativity and imagination: What will you create today? A snail? A scary dinosaur? Dinner for your dolls? The possibilities are endless 3. Calming: squashing and rolling a piece of playdough in your hand is a very calming activity. (And it might even give you a 5 minute break for a hot coffee ) 4. Develops hand-eye co-ordination: using a variety of materials and objects in playdough play can enhance hand-eye co-ordination. Recipe 2 Cups plain flour 4 Tablespoons Cream of Tatar 1 cup salt 2 cups water 2 tablespoons cooking oil Food colouring Method: mix all ingredients in a saucepan. Stir over medium heat for 3-4 minute or until the mixture congeals, stirring frequently. Or you can even try making it in the slow cooker (this is Veronicas favourite method as you can do other things while the playdough cooks) http://www.slowcookercentral.com/re/slow-cooker-play-dough/

11.01.2022 PRODUCT RECOMMENDATION Archies thongs have been a game changer for me personally. These thongs are designed by an Australian Physiotherapist, and are great because of the in-built arch support AND the tight straps which means no more toe grabbing. Unfortunately these do not come in kids sizes, but starts at size US 6 womens and US 5 for men which may be suitable for pre-teens and teenagers. Some children with various conditions such as cerebral palsy find it hard to wear tho...ngs and to keep them on their feet. In this scenario Archies would be well worth a try given the tight straps which makes keeping a thong on your foot much much easier. Archies Footwear can be purchased online at https://archiesfootwear.com.au/ or if you would like to try before you buy, I purchased mine at The Biomechanics Lab - just call before you go to make sure they have your size in stock! Please note, I do not have any affiliation with Archies, this is simply my personal opinion after having worn Archies for a year.

10.01.2022 Happy International Day of People with Disability!

09.01.2022 CHECK THIS OUT! This is me! Running! Yesterday I had the privilege of having a 3D running assessment at The Biomechanics Lab. It is a pretty cool process where little markers are positioned on your joints and particular key points on your body, then you run on a highly specialised treadmill where you are recorded from every angle. The result is what you can see in the video below. This sort of assessment is considered to be the "gold standard" of objective measures, allowing... therapists to very specifically measure how your body is moving and thus where your strengths and weaknesses lie for better and more targeted therapy programs. This sort of assessment can also be completed by walking, depending on why and what you are measuring. If anyone is thinking that they may be interested in exploring this option for any particular reason, feel free to give the very kind people at the Biomechanics Lab a call or of course come chat to me, Hayley, at MOVEability. 05.01.2022 UPPER BODY STRENGTH There are so many ways to work on your childs upper body strength; playgrounds, monkey bars, climbing a tree, swimming just to name a few. But whatever activity you choose, the key is repetition and frequency especially in children with low tone. Integrating exercises and activities into your childs weekly routine is the most effective way at developing strength. In my household we do swimming and gymnastics, and now we have a brand new Slackers Ninjaline and Slackline to build up some muscles. The set-up below also has the added physical benefits of working on balance and core strength simultaneously. If your child needs to build up some strength and you are not sure how to go about it, speak to your therapist for some personalised ideas and suggestions
