18.01.2022 I have been paid for every performance job I have had, regardless of age, training status and quality of job, even when it was just doing a box step and clapping my hands. Not always well (but that’s another conversation!), but always compensated. The timing of this is particularly poor, salt in the wound if you like, but pandemic or not, this is an issue pervasive in the performing arts in Australia for too long. If you don’t want to pay for the service, no matter what that service is, then you don’t deserve to have it. If the largest, televised performance of the year doesn’t deserve pay and is just an opportunity and work experience, what jobs in Australia are going to pay dancers?

13.01.2022 Happy Holidays movement lovers! Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season. For many, it’s not the holiday they were hoping for, for others it’s a chance to connect with loved ones they’ve been apart from. Whatever your holiday season looks like this year, I hope you can find joy and gratitude in the small things and we can all look to 2021 with some hope and optimism. Be kind to one another, and I hope to see you in person or online in the new year!

12.01.2022 Ballet is for everyone. This is my beautiful friend and colleague Sam Akins and this is what he has been experiencing in the dance industry for the past year in Australia. No more silence. We must be better.

10.01.2022 Dance has been part of my life since the age of 3. I was always active and interested in trying new things, but I always came back to dance. At 25 I developed chronic ankle pain, which ended my performance career and I still live with today. As dancers we define ourselves by what we do so injury or transition out of dance alters our sense of self. Finding a new passion for teaching and more recently reigniting an old love for study and academia has been helpful but finding n...ew ways to move and moving for health and fitness rather than training towards a goal has been a constant challenge for me. The physical changes in my body are also challenging at times. My body doesn’t look the same or move the same as it did when I was performing. Finding new ways to love movement is a constant journey, but one that I am excited to be on. Share your movement journey by tagging me and using the tag #mymovementjourney See more

03.01.2022 Two of my favourite things, nature and movement, brought together so beautifully by my dear friend @567click I miss our creative collaborations so much and am so grateful to have these beautiful memories not only of my dance days but also of our friendship and adventures!

02.01.2022 This is Joe. Joe is not a dancer. We spent 15 minutes with a foam roller and a tennis ball doing some gentle mobilisation work and this was the result. When he tries to stretch, he feels a lot of pulling and extreme tightness and tension. After some gentle releases, Joe could not only access more range, he also no longer felt the strong pulling sensation in the back of his leg and through his back. Stay tuned for videos of some of the techniques we used to achieve this!

02.01.2022 The amazing Sam Akins is a guest on the upcoming episode of Beyond The Curtain! Make sure you’re subscribed to the podcast so you don’t miss it, Sam is such a beautiful human and always has wise words to share with aspiring dancers as well as having some amazing experiences and stories to share.
