24.01.2022 Congratulations to MQ alumna Distinguished Professor Anne Castles (PhD 1993) from the Department of Cognitive Sciences for winning a prestigious UK accolade. Along with two of her UK-based collaborators, Anne has won this year’s Economic and Social Research Council Celebrating Impact Prize in the category of ‘Outstanding International Impact,’ based on their highly regarded 2018 paper about bringing the science of reading to reading instruction in classrooms around the world. The paper, titled, Ending the Reading Wars: Reading Acquisition From Novice to Expert has had over 150,000 views and downloads since its release. The other two winners who were part of the research team were Professor Kathy Rastle of Royal Holloway, University of London and Professor Kate Nation of the University of Oxford.

18.01.2022 We are so proud of Macquarie University alumna and world-renowned physicist Dr Cathy Foley, who has been appointed the new Chief Scientist of Australia. Dr Foley, who has spent the past two years as chief scientist at CSIRO, has a Diploma of Education in High School Physics (1979), a Bachelor of Science (Hons) majoring in Physics (1980) and a PhD in Physics (1984), all from Macquarie University. We're thrilled to announce Macquarie has won the Employability Award at the Australian Financial Review (AFR) Higher Education Awards, for preparing students for the world of work through the reimagined Bachelor of Arts. We worked with major employers including NSW Government, Accenture, EY, Deloitte, Adobe and CBA to redesign the degree. This collaboration ensured students are provided with in-demand transferable skills, along w...ith the knowledge and tools they require to be successful throughout their careers. Our reimagined Bachelor of Arts has already proved popular with students. Students have responded very positively to the new foundation and capstone units that focus on employability skills, says Martina Mollering, Executive Dean, Faculty of Arts. It’s great that our innovative approach to employability has now also been acknowledged with this AFR award.
