20.01.2022 While the author of this article is a psychologist and me a surgeon, as a clinician researcher myself, I could not agree more with what Dr Ursula Sansom-Daly wrote about clinician researchers in Australia. Here are a few quotes to summarise: "To improve our patients' care we need to enable clinicians to actively lead research agendas."... "To stay competitive, researchers need to focus on publishing papers and getting grants. But translating research into practice takes time and doesn't necessarily lead to metrics that are currently prized by academic institutions." "And while these clinicians are obliged to keep up-to-date with research for professional development, few will have the capacity with a full workload to craft and lead research studies." "clinicians who are also researchers have a foot in both camps 'double agents' if you like with well-established connections, already brokered on either side." "We don't currently have a single clear path to becoming a clinician-researcher in Australia."

10.01.2022 Having recently introduced posterior retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy to Epworth Richmond, I am lucky to have a team of technicians who are so committed in helping me sort out the inevitable teething problems associated with the patient positioning. This was Daniel yesterday making fine adjustments to the operating table to make sure the patient was able to be in the optimal position for the procedure. The success and ease of every procedure depend on a multitude of facto...rs. In addition to the knowledge, training and skills of the doctors, the roles that the nurses and technicians play cannot be underestimated. The team performs at its best when there is synergy and flow among its members. The adrenal glands are some of the most inaccessible organs in the body - they’re retroperitoneal, tucked up high under the diaphragm and rib cage, closely related to many high-risk structures. Therefore, any surgery on the adrenal glands used to be massive surgery involving large incisions, long hospital stay, significant postoperative pain, and slow recovery. Day 1 post posterior retroperitoneal adrenalectomy, I am often pleasantly surprised by my patients who have only needed panadol for pain control and ready to go home! Whoever designed this procedure is a genius!!

07.01.2022 In their end of term chat, I often advise interns to learn to see each patient as someone’s parent, child, , significant other, etc, rather than a list of to-do’s. Everything else will fall into place if you treat them with the care and respect they deserve.

04.01.2022 The Aftershock is putting on an amazing exhibition tomorrow evening, documenting the lives of 16 inspiring individuals affected by cancer. All funds raised go to cancer research. What could be a better cause? Please come support! The Aftershock

03.01.2022 With the opening of the Casey ICU unit, I’m looking forward to managing patients with more complex thyroid issues locally, without having to transfer them to other campuses! Also excited to start operating in the brand new operating theatres. Not an opportunity that comes by often!!
