21.01.2022 Lately I have been working with a few kids who need some help to manage their emotions / self-regulate. We have been using the Zones of Regulation program. He is an example of a child drawing what it feels like to be out of control / upset. Think about talking about emotions as they happen at home. Name the emotion eg. happy/sad/confused etc. and talk about how your body reacts to that emotion eg. butterflies in stomach, tense fists etc. This is a great first step in helping children identify the emotions they are feeling, and then they can learn what they can do about it. This child identified some superheroes that may feel this way at times :-)

15.01.2022 School holidays are rapidly approaching. If you are looking for something fun to do, try out this idea. It looks like a fun way to practice hand skills and develop thumb strength. 11.01.2022 As children head back to school, behaviours can go a bit haywire as they settle into a new routine. Take time to think about how you can praise your child during the day. Being specific with your praise is great.Check out the handout on the Power of Praise at the website below: https://bestprograms4kids.com/downloads/

10.01.2022 I attended a great conference last week - "Conquering the wees and poos" presented by Rebecca Khan. One simple piece of advice was encourage children to drink whole drinks (a whole cup - not sipping all through the day). This helps them feel when they need to go to the toilet as the bladder fills all at once. Here are some tips for making drinking water fun: https://kidsthatgo.com/wp-cont/uploads/2018-water-sheet.pdf

10.01.2022 Teaching kids to play is one of the most rewarding things I get to do as an OT. It is so wonderful seeing a child go from throwing items to creating a play scene with all sorts of different toys. Pretend play skills are so important. See the link below for some more information. https://www.learntoplayevents.com//What-is-Pretend-Play-Fu
