25.01.2022 A Very Merry Christmas and a Fabulous New Year to all our Clients and their cherished Pets. Thank you for your support throughout the year. May your New Year bring healthy and happy pets. If you do need us over the break, as always we have one of our Vets on call for emergencies. Please see our holiday opening hours for all other enquiries.

25.01.2022 Mount Barker Veterinary Clinic is listed as an essential service so we will be staying open for urgent cases and emergencies. We will be rescheduling routine appointments such as vaccinations and desexings till after the immediate lockdown is ended. We ask you ring the clinic if you have any enquiries, need Veterinary advice or are not sure if your animal needs to be seen. We are committed to maintaining the highest standards of infection control while still providing our ess...ential community services including our in-clinic services, farm call outs, and our 24-hour emergency service. We ask you stay in your car, and ring us when you arrive and we will come out to you in the carpark. You must be wearing a mask. We will be using contactless payment or phone payment. FOR REPEAT MEDICATIONS, FOOD OR OTHER PET PRODUCT PURCHASES please call ahead, pay for them over the phone and we can have them ready to bring out to your car. FOR SURGERY ADMISSIONS we will be bringing the consent form out to you to sign, then collecting your pet from the car. If you have any questions regarding your pet’s procedure, we will be more than happy to discuss this with you over the phone prior to admission. FOR ON- FARM CALLS we would ask that you limit the number of people present to the minimum possible, preferably just one person and they must be wearing a mask. We thank you for your understanding and assure you, we will continue to provide our essential vet services for as long as it is possible. Please also make plans for someone to care for your animals, if you do happen to get sick and can’t care for them yourself. Stay safe and enjoy the extra time home with your pets. See more

24.01.2022 We see many families with Doodles ie Poodle crosses at the clinic. At puppy school, I love their happy go lucky comedic nature and the fact they are smart thinking dogs. But they can present challenges such as their coats that require a lot of maintenance and their sometimes lack of off button and low boredom threshold. This article is an interesting look on what has become a very popular family pet.

24.01.2022 The fish that caught the cat or curiosity caught the cat! We had an urgent plea for help after hours when Luna the stunning Bengal Cat accidentally got into her owners fishing tackle. Luna managed to get herself hooked by not one but both paws on a large shiny iridescent fish lure. The large hook had gone through both of her front feet pinning them together and making her panic. Our Vet Daniel cut the hook then removed it from both feet. Here she is having a cuddle with her owners after the ordeal. Thankfully she will recover fine but after such a fright the tackle in now well and truly locked away.

24.01.2022 Have you seen the renovation of the old stables happening at the Vet Clinic? 23.01.2022 The unwanted gift one of our clients received from their dog. Fortunately their dog will be fine, but it is a reminder at this time of year with the lovely warm spring weather, snakes emerge from winter hibernation. Unfortunately the natural curiosity and hunting instincts of our furry friends mean many pets are at risk of a potentially lethal encounter. If you are suspicious your pet has been bitten by a snake, try to keep your pet calm and seek veterinary assistance immedia...tely. Do not wait to see if they show symptoms as by then the poison is already causing damage. We can rapidly test for you using our in house blood machine so you can have peace of mind straight away that they are OK or if bitten can start treatment straight away. The sooner you start treatment the better the outcome. It is important for us all to be able to recognise some of the common signs. Australia has various species of venomous snakes, however the most common species seen in the Adelaide Hills are Red Belly Blacks and Eastern Brown snakes. In our canine friends, clinical signs of envenomation include; collapse, vomiting, profuse salivation and lethargy. Some dogs may appear to recover initially but will deteriorate rapidly, so immediate veterinary assistance is recommended. Cats can display a range of symptoms most commonly weakness or paralysis. Symptoms will greatly vary depending on the type of snake and dose of venom delivered in the bite. Treatment of an envenomation include administration of antivenom and hospitalisation for supportive care. We always have antivenom on hand in case your pet requires it. Also if it is afterhours please ring the clinic on 8391 1404 and you will be transferred to our Vet on call. We are available 24/7 for clients and can see you at our clinic in an emergency. 23.01.2022 WARNING due to the current Fire threat in neighbouring towns and the Catastrophic conditions, we will not be taking any normal bookings at this time and will only be open for emergencies with a skeleton staff. Many of our staff live in the current warning zone, so thank you for your understanding. Please ensure your small animals are inside in the cool with water and your large animals have access to water and shade. It is time to activate your bushfire plans for your animals. Our thoughts are with everyone facing this threat.

21.01.2022 Some local specials for your lucky dog or cat.

20.01.2022 With the world full of grim news at the moment we thought it was about time we posted some happy news. So we would like to wish a special happy birthday to Jasper who turns 17 years old today. Jasper is a very much loved Burmese cat owned by Hannah, one of our dedicated vet nurses. Jasper has had his health challenges, but with excellent care from Hannah, he is still going strong. We hope he gets a special dinner of his favourite raw meat tonight and lots of cuddles.

19.01.2022 As we remember today the many people who fought and died, please don't forget the many animals that also helped in this battle and who had no choice about it. Their loyalty to their masters during war should be a lesson to us. Let us all remember the many service animals, most who never got to come home again or know peace.

18.01.2022 We all agree that the Cutest patient of the day award goes to this sweet girl! An important part of our role in the community includes pro bono charity work for a wide variety of rescue organisations that volunteer their time to help rehabilitate our precious wildlife. If you have any questions about how you can donate to these charities please contact the clinic on 08 8391 1404

17.01.2022 With the recent fires in our area we have been busy treating some of it's victims. Meet Katie, a very sweet kangaroo rescued in the aftermath of the recent fires at Charleston. She was brought into the clinic for treatment by Anne Pashley from Native Animal Network. Katie was being treated for burns on both her hind feet by the carers. Unfortunately one of her toes on her left hind foot developed a nasty bone and nail bed infection which was unresponsive to antibiotics. So ...Dr Helene and the team decided that amputation was the only way to save her foot. Surprisingly, kangaroos are very adaptable and usually cope well with partial amputations. Katie should feel a lot better after removal of her painful toe. In a few weeks when the wound has healed, she will be released back to wild via a graduated release program. Donations to help the fire affected animals can be made directly to Native Animal Network. See more

17.01.2022 Fat or Foe? Ever get a little worried about those little lumps on your furry friend? Did you know our pets can get a wide range of lumps and bumps, and unfortunately how they feel doesnt always tell us what they are. The best way to get some piece of mind is with one of our friendly veterinarians. Samples can be taken at the time of consult with a small needle and be examined under the microscope, right then and there! These big marshmallow looking cells taken from Bobbys lumps are called adipocytes commonly found in a type of lump called a lipoma. Lucky for our nurse Mollys favourite boy Bobby, these are often benign and only require monitoring rather than immediate surgical excision. If you have any lumps on your pet you are concerned about, please call the clinic to make an appointment on (08) 8391 1404.

17.01.2022 Look at this dear little boy who came for his first check up today. Can you help the Craggs find a name for their new boy Kitten? So far he is listed as unnamed Craggs!! I think such a sweet boy needs a special name, please add your suggestions into the comments and we will let you know what name he ends up with.

16.01.2022 We wish all our human mothers and fur mothers and animal mothers, a very happy mother's day and hope you all got some extra cuddles, treats and tail wags.

16.01.2022 Blueberries are full of antioxidants and other vitamins. They are a great addition to your dogs diet. Our dogs love them and now we know their ancestors do as well.

15.01.2022 Gauge is a 5 year old German Wirehaired Pointer with a big personality and a habit of getting into trouble. His latest misadventure was when his owner gave him a roo forearm bone to keep him busy, while his owner headed off in the car. Gauge was so concerned he’d be left behind, he swallowed the whole thing without chewing and raced after his owners car. Fortunately this owner realised what had happened and bought him in for prompt treatment. When he came into the clinic, h...e was drooling and appeared very uncomfortable. A chest x ray revealed a large bone stuck in his oesophagus. He had general anaesthetic, Dr Helene visualised the bone on endoscopy and removed it with large endoscopic forceps back up through his mouth. Gauge recovered uneventfully ready for another adventure. A good reminder to always keep a supervising eye on dogs while they are eating bones. See more

11.01.2022 This little treasure Chloe has been on a big long adventure! Chloe went missing from her home East of Adelaide nearly 2 whole years ago! Her lovely Mum had gotten Chloe microchipped as a kitten and when Chloe went missing she updated her file to report her as missing. Chloe had somehow managed to find herself here in Mount Barker, wandering around as a stray in this time. A good Samaritan who has noticed Chloe in the neighbourhood living rough, was finally able to pick her ...up and bring her in to be scanned. She was unsure if this cat had a home already or was wild but her curiosity got the better of her after seeing her hanging around for such a long time without a collar. Using our microchip scanner, we were quickly able to identify Chloes owner, who was over the moon and delighted that we called her and she quickly made the drive from the other side of Adelaide to Mount Barker to collect her. Chloe will now have a new sibling who she will slowly be introduced to and her owner Cheryl will have twice as much love in her life with two lovely cats. This story goes to show how important microchipping is for your pets and particularly making sure your details are kept up to date. Also it is a good idea to report them lost or stolen to the microchip database your pet is registered with. We are very pleased to be part of this happy ending for Chloe and her owner.
