18.01.2022 A group of Year 10 and 11 students have just completed a Careers in a Mining project to find out about the diversity of work roles in the mining industry. The ...initiative consisted of an informative seminar presented by Mt Gibson Iron staff Tim Wride and Francis Woolagoodja ( a past student of St Marys College), a research project and a day trip to the Koolan Island iron ore mine. At the site, students were given a safety induction (and a lovely morning tea) on arrival. The group then had a tour of the ship loading dock and crushing plant and a lookout view of the main pit. After having lunch and chatting with mine workers, each student was allocated to a dump truck driver and completed two 200-tonne loads. Students then visited the maintenance depot, paramedic unit, and the main pit to see a blast being prepared. The highlight, of course, was seeing the blast itself from the safety of the lookout. We thank Tim Wride and the team at Mt Gibson Iron for giving the students such an excellent first-hand experience of mine site work and Aviair for getting us safely there and back. 18.01.2022 The arrival last week of the first Qantas Fokker 100 charter service carrying Mount Gibson personnel to our flagship Koolan Island operation in the Kimberley marked an important milestone for the Company. With our new 2.1km long jet-capable airstrip operational, Perth-based site personnel now fly direct to the remote island, located 140km north of Derby in the Buccaneer Archipelago, dramatically reducing travel times to and from site, making for a happier, healthier and safer workplace. Could there be a more spectacular view on approach to any mine-site in Australia? Congratulations to everyone involved in making this magnificent facility a reality.

16.01.2022 Mount Gibson Irons Koolan Island team has this week taken delivery of two vibrant new pieces of kit as part of a site-inspired campaign to help raise awareness of two major health issues which have a debilitating effect on thousands of families across the Australian community every year. At the request of the site workforce, the mines two new Caterpillar 16M graders were painted bright pink and blue to raise and maintain awareness of breast cancer and mental health respectively all year round. The graders will also complement the teams efforts to expand upon and add to existing site-based initiatives, such as Pink Shirt Fridays, the proceeds of which go to breast cancer charities.
