25.01.2022 The sun took its time to come out but things are looking up for the Hockeyroos in New Zealand. One more training session before the tri nations tournament gets underway and as you can see they are very excited.

25.01.2022 The Kookaburras are playing against the Netherlands in just under 2 weeks. Flynn Ogilvie (pictured) has been in rehab with Mike, Kim and the medical team at Hockey Australia for the last 6 months after a significant soft tissue injury. These games will mark the return to the national team for Flynn after plenty of time in the gym and on the track. Just as with our patients in the clinic, a goal was set and criteria mapped out to achieve this. When approaching rehab it is important to have a goal in mind and look at the most practical way to get there. Wishing the team and Flynn all the best for his return.

23.01.2022 A pain in the When people come to physio it is usually because they have pain. Quite often the question is "why is it so sore?" or "when will it not hurt?". All very understandable questions as no one likes to have pain. The thing to remember about pain is that it is a normal part of injury (and life) but influenced by many factors. Pain after an injury is the brain (and body) telling us to allow rest and healing - also known as acute pain. Pain that persists for longer per...iods, usually >3 months is called chronic or persistent pain. To put it very (very) simply persistent pain is often the result of our brain and nervous system being over excited just like turning up a volume dial. The thing to remember is while pain is not nice - it does not always mean further injury or more damage. The picture below delivers these key points in a very simple message. Patients who are unsure about their pain will get guidance and an explanation from their physiotherapist to help understand this process. See more

22.01.2022 The urge to exercise can take a back seat as the winter chill sets in - this can in turn lead to an increase in aches and pains especially the lower back. The Lancet series on low back pain management was recently released and the evidence is overwhelmingly in favour of exercise. A majority of low back pain does not require imaging, surgical review or prescription medications. No specific exercise was better than another - it is more about doing something that you enjoy regul...arly. http://www.abc.net.au//treating-lower-back-pain-wi/9850798 What is more important is knowing how and when to begin moving. This is where advice from your GP and physio becomes important - ideas around what will work for you and pacing appropriately will help get you back to full activity quicker. For those of you who have had imaging and still become concerned about what the findings are or when you get some back pain, take a look at the picture below for some reassurance.

21.01.2022 COVID-19 ... Working together, our Directors both Michael Wood and Sonja Belle-Wood are looking at innovative and creative ways that we can look after our patients and the broader community in light of self isolation and working from home mandates. Our sister business Occupational Fitness Solutions works with many Australian companies helping them reduce the risk of employees developing overuse injuries. Take a peek at our video on why we think "The Mouse is going to be the... most dangerous creature at home" and how we can help some of the millions of Australians now working from home. Feel free to share with your friends. MTM Physiotherapy Subiaco is tele-health ready.

21.01.2022 A recent report found serious knee injuries during the period of 2000-2015 are up 70% in our young and adolescent population. This coincided with a focus on sports becoming more professional amongst this age group. With the demand to train and play more, the risk for injury can also increase. During this period of development the body needs time to allow for skeletal and neuromuscular maturity to occur. Health professionals such as physiotherapists take time to identify areas that require attention which can help reduce the risk of injury. Programs such as the FIFA 11 protocol are a great way clubs can proactively look to reduce the likelihood of injury. For more information feel free to contact MTM Physiotherapy Subiaco. http://www.abc.net.au//acl-injuries-knee-reconstru/9679672

18.01.2022 Change of direction movements are apart of nearly every sport. Training this movement is an important part of injury prevention especially when it comes to junior athletes. When looking at turning drills we have to get the upper and lower body moving in sync otherwise we see counter movements resisting what one segment is trying to do. The image below from the AFL website shows a young player displaying great biomechanics as he turns to run. His torso is aligned to his hips and you can also see the lower body moving towards his target while is foot pushes in the same direction. The benefit of having a great technique for change of direction tasks is not only injury prevention but it also serves to improve speed and skills. When it comes to sports training and development be sure to include some drills targeted at turning technique.

02.01.2022 A few good messages out of this article. Not only is walking regularly good for - a brisk pace helps to reduce the risk of a range of chronic conditions. Setting a goal of 30 minutes daily or 10,000 steps is a nice way to try and find some exercise especially when you need the motivation in this cold and wet weather! https://www.watoday.com.au//you-ve-got-to-huff-and-puff-st
