15.01.2022 OCTOBER IS PINK RIBBON MONTH Every day in Australia, 70 women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in Australian women (apart from common skin cancers). About 17,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and one in eight will be diagnosed by the age of 85. It is more common in women over 40, however it can present at any age. About 150 men are diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia each year as well, and m...ost of these men are over 50. The best way to prevent breast cancer is by using preventative health screening tools available through your doctor. Women aged 5074 are recommended to have a mammogram screen every two years. Each year about 850 women in Australia are diagnosed with cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is most commonly diagnosed in women over 30, but it can occur at any age. About one in 195 women will develop cervical cancer before the age of 75. The best way to detect precancerous changes and early cervical cancer is to have regular screening tests the ‘Cervical Screening Test’(formally Pap test) has been available since 2017 and screens for the human papillomavirus (HPV). Evidence has found that screening women for HPV is a more effective way of preventing cervical cancer. The incidence of cervical cancer in Australia has decreased significantly since a national screening program was introduced in the 1990s. Women aged 2574 are tested for HPV by their doctor every 5 years. Risk factors for cervical cancer include: + Smoking and passive smoking + Long-term use of oral contraceptive (the pill) + Having a weakened immune system + Exposure to diethylstilbestrol (DES) a synthetic (artificial) form of the female hormone oestrogen. PREVENTATIVE HEALTH STRATEGIES FOR CANCER One in three cancers can be prevented, to reduce your cancer risk use preventative health screening as advised by your GP and start making healthy lifestyle choices such as: + Reduce alcohol to an average of no more than 2 standard drinks a day and avoid binge drinking (more than 4 standard drinks in one session) + Maintain a health weight with regular daily exercise + Have a wholefood diet with a good variety of colourful fruit & vegetables and be conscious to make healthy food choices daily + Avoid smoking + Use sunscreen and sun protection whenever you are in the sun. + Use screening and early detection tools available through your GP For more information and support on screening or preventative health strategies please see our blog or contact our reception on 02 6684 1511 to make a booking with one of our GP’s. https://www.mullumhealthcentre.com/blog/ References: https://www.cancercouncil.com.au/
