24.01.2022 On 17 March 2020, the #ChineseMuseum temporarily closed its doors to the public to help ensure the safety of staff and visitors. With some restrictions easing, Chinese Museum re-opened and started welcoming back visitors on weekends from the 27th of June. Many staff continued working during this period of temporary closure. For example, the Curatorial team carried on with looking after over 8,000 objects that are in our collections. They ensured that appropriate env...ironmental conditions, such as temperature, relative humidity, and UV levels, were maintained while the building was closed. Objects were also regularly inspected for insect activities. One of the simplest and safest methods that museums use to kill insects is by using a freezer. Insects are killed when objects are placed in a freezer for at least seven days at -20 C or lower. Pictured here is one of the Curatorial team members putting a circa 1850 Cantonese-English phrasebook inside an acid-free polyethylene envelope before returning it the collection room, and using a special brush to remove dust from precious textiles. Taking excellent care of the objects in the collections, no matter what our circumstances may be at the time, is one way of fulfilling the mission to preserve and present #Chineseculture and #Australianhistory in order to recognise and celebrate the identity of #ChineseAustralians.
24.01.2022 We're delighted to announce the opening of the Nonne exhibition in Wodonga, which celebrates Italian Australian Grandmothers with images through generations. Bonegilla Migrant Experiences latest exhibition will leave visitors with a fresh appreciation of the role that nonna plays in our lives and in our community. Nonna, Italian for grandmother, is someone special in most peoples lives and this exhibition showcases the role of the Italian Australian Nonne through historic ...and contemporary photographs. Nonne, Images Through Generations is on loan from CO.AS.IT. Italian Historical Society and Museo Italiano. This evocative exhibition draws on the remarkable photographic collection of CO.AS.ITs Italian Historical Society, as well as contemporary images and stories specifically collected from members of the Italian community. Whether it is a long distance or much-loved nonna, a surrogate nonna, master chef or great story-teller, we all have or have had a nonna. Come take a look at the 16 exhibition panels that feature photos like the one of Nonna Sebastiana in her garden with granddaughter Angela, preparing home-grown tomatoes for bottling, taken in Richmond, 1957. During the years in which Bonegilla operated, more than 350,000 Italian migrants came to Australia. CO.AS.IT. Italian Historical Society & Museo Italiano Manager Elizabeth Triarico said having a nonna in ones life is special. Those children who migrated to Australia in the post-World War II period know this. They felt the absence of this special connection deeply, she said. Today, with the new wave of young Italian immigrants to Australia, we have come full circle. The exhibition acknowledges this nonne and the diversity of their experiences. If you're passing Bonegilla don't miss out. 23.01.2022 Following in the footsteps of over 260 Chinese Australians who served as Anzacs, during World War II, Australians of Chinese ancestry willingly enlisted in the ...Second Australian Imperial Force (2 AIF), the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), the Royal Australian Navy (RAN), and in the Women’s Auxiliary Services. Over a thousand Australians of Chinese descent enlisted in World War II. Most served in the 2 AIF and the Citizen Military Force (CMF). Two hundred served in the RAAF and a very small number of 15 served in the RAN. Of those enlisted, 309 were born in Victoria, 289 in New South Wales, 207 in Queensland, 66 in the Northern Territory, 47 in Western Australia, 29 in South Australia, and 11 in Tasmania. Amongst those enlisted in Victoria, 41 were born in other states and territories. In total, 350 persons of Chinese ancestry enlisted in Victoria to serve Australia in World War II. The 309 Victorian-born servicemen and 17 Victorian-born service women identified from the National Archives of Australia (NAA) database represent 47% of age-eligible males and 4% of age-eligible females. Such a figure reflects a high degree of loyalty and commitment to military service within the Chinese population in Victoria during World War II. In addition to Australians with Chinese ancestry, more than 550 non-Australian Chinese enlisted. Most were either merchant seamen who were stranded in Australia when war was declared or Chinese refugees from enemy-occupied Pacific territories, initially interned as enemy aliens. They were allowed to volunteer in the 7th Army Employment Company, also called the Chinese Labour Corps, and were assigned service numbers as full (non-combatant) members of the Army. To commemorate those Anzacs who had Chinese Australian heritage, we created the exhibition Stories of Chinese Anzacs and Chinese-Australians of World War II to pay our respect. On this special day, lest we forgot. #chineseaustralia #chineseanzacs #veterans #exhibition #museum #chinesemuseum #whatsonmelb #melbmoments #WWII #WWIIveteran #anzacday2021 #lestweforget #anzacspirit

22.01.2022 Are you a family member of an #Australiansoldier of Chinese Ancestry? Do you have personal memories, photographs and memorabilia of a #ChineseAustralian's WWII service to Australia? If so, please help us with our research by providing your information. ... 2020 marks the 75th year since the end of the #SecondWorldWar. With support from the Victorian Government, we are undertaking research into the loyal participation of #ChineseAustralian women and men in this war to produce a freshly researched book. As the National Archives Service Records are not yet fully digitised, we may not be able to obtain as much detailed history of these women and men, from official records, as we have with the #ChineseANZACS. The next generations of these women and men may have personal memories, photographs and memorabilia of their service to Australia. We are appealing for such to be offered to the Museum to contribute to this book. 17.01.2022 @chinesemuse The #WhiteAustralia Policy was about people- people whose lives were monitored and restricted because of the colour of their skin. The #RealFaceofWhiteAustralia is a series of projects aimed at increasing awareness and use of a powerful set of historical documents created in the administration of the White Australia Policy in the first half of the twentieth century. The project involves crowdsourced transcription data from identification documents namely Certi...ficates of Domicile and Certificates Exempting from the Dictation Test created by the administration of the Immigration Restriction Act in the first half of the 20th century. There is also this #experimentalbrowser that enables you to explore the records of the White Australia Policy through the faces of those people. These portraits were extracted from a range of government documents using a face detection script. The Chinese Australian Family Historians of Victoria with support from the #ChineseMuseum, has helped transcribe entries in Victorias handwritten Certificate Exempting from Dictation Test (CEDT) registers held by the National Archives of Australia. #multiculturalism #chineseaustralians #transcribe @chinesemuse
