24.01.2022 We will be sharing more about this announcement soon. In the meantime check out the Fair Trading factsheets for how these new measures will impact your tenancy. We welcome the news that the minimum notice for landlords terminating at the end of fixed term tenancies has been extended to 90 days, as well as for breach notices other than rent arrears.

24.01.2022 What's it been like for you renting during coronavirus?

20.01.2022 Prime Minister has confirmed there will be a moratorium on evictions for 6 months. Thanks for everyone's work in sharing, signing petitions and emailing Pre...miers. You made this happen! But there is more to do. This is a huge announcement, but the details are unclear - it's possibly only for people in financial distress and hardship. It may not cover landlords evicting for other reasons or people not in formal tenancies. It would be a real shame if landlords were able to evade the Prime Minister's announcement by simply serving a 'no grounds' notice. We cannot leave anyone in the community behind, we cannot risk people's health by allowing evictions for no grounds. The next stage is for NSW government to implement the moratorium. Tasmania was able to protect all tenants - they proved that it is possible. All states and territories now need to do the same. #NoEvictionsCovid19 We know there are many people waiting to hear about the rent relief side of things to make decisions about their home. There was also no detail yet on possible relief around rents. There may be more detail to come tonight and we will update when we can. In the meantime we have written this explainer post around the language different kinds of rent relief that governments, landlords and tenants may use: https://www.tenants.org.au//rent-relief-language-quick-exp

20.01.2022 HUGE WIN JUST ANNOUNCED: 6-MONTH EVICTION MORATORIUM Thanks to the tireless work of tenants' unions, community advocates, and the thousands of GetUp memb...ers who contacted their MPs the Government has been forced to put a 6-month stop to all rental evictions caused by financial hardship! This is a massive win for renters across the country who were worried about losing their homes during a major pandemic and an uncertain economy. Now, the states / territories MUST ensure this moratorium is extended to all types of renters and include a ban on no-grounds evictions. But we've proven again that people power works and we'll continue to make sure we get the best possible outcome

19.01.2022 "We need to ensure households retain enough income for the essentials, with reductions in income equitably shared." Dr Chris Martin from UNSW's City Futures Research Centre explains how a government-mandated reduction or suspension of rent would work and why we need it.

19.01.2022 We know this has been a long, upsetting wait for everyone before the eviction moratorium and rent relief comes into place. Here's a quick update on where the s...tates and territories are all at: New South Wales: has set in place ability to make a declaration. No announcement yet (we currently expect to hear it this weekend), but we understand it will be broader than evictions and include at least some structure around rents. Queensland: has announced framework for support, still needs to be passed in parliament. Includes a limited moratorium, and extensions to fixed term leases that expire during the period. The state is giving $2000 grants to help cover some of the rent for a short period. Tasmania: has an eviction moratorium in place, the strongest so far in Australia. However no other supports have been announced. South Australia: has passed legislation, with a very limited moratorium on rents (where tenants must force the landlord to take an eviction to Tribunal to gain protection) and other supports. Australian Capital Territory: has set in place the ability for government to make a declaration, but only a little detail on what this will look like. Has also announced land tax relief for landlords who agree to rent reductions. Victoria: no announcement yet. Western Australia: no announcement yet. Northern Territory: no announcement yet. Reminder we have a frequently updated info post on all things renting and covid-19; https://www.tenants.org.au//renting-and-covid-19-informati

18.01.2022 We are sure that many of you have seen that last night the PM announced a six-month moratorium on evictions resulting from financial distress. While this is a huge step in protecting tenants while we deal with the COVID19 crisis, the details are vague and EATS are concerned that this will only cover tenants who are formally protected under the Residential Tenancies Act and facing termination due to rent arrears. We now have to wait and see how the NSW Government formally im...plement this measure, and we hope that they follow Tasmania’s lead and ban ALL evictions during this pandemic. Putting a ban only on evictions based on rent arrears does not protect tenants against no grounds terminations, or terminations at the end of a fixed-term agreement. Similarly, there is no point putting a six-month moratorium on evictions only for tenants to be lumped with thousands of dollars of rent arrears, or risk having their home repossessed by the banks if their landlord can’t afford their mortgage payments. The PM’s suggestion to simply sit down and chat with your landlord is not enough - we must also ensure some form of relief for rents and mortgages. YOU made this moratorium happen by sharing and signing petitions and contacting politicians - here is a chance to do it again! You can call Kevin Anderson, Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation, on (02) 8574 5550, and Dominic Perrottet, the Treasurer, on (02) 8574 6900. If you don’t feel comfortable calling, send an email! Kevin Anderson - [email protected]; Dominic Perrottet - [email protected]. Let’s see what we can get done when we raise our voices!

15.01.2022 Why is it taking so long?

09.01.2022 What support is available if I have lost income? What should I do if I can’t pay my full rent? How do I end my tenancy agreement? How do rent negotiations work?... Am I an 'impacted tenant'? We know COVID-19 is causing uncertainty in renting, so we've put together the information into our brand new COVID-19 guide. It includes information about the legal situation and a calculator to help assess rent reduction.
