24.01.2022 Nature & Nurture - Both important to the development of a child This study shows that bright teenagers' brains may act like those of younger children in their ability to learn from the environment. Their window of opportunity for language learning may be longer than originally thought. "Even if you're a teenager, it might not be too late to start learning Chinese, chess or the cello."... (Of course, I don't think it's ever too late to learn a language! )

22.01.2022 On babies and language... In the first four years of life, a child’s brain is focused on language acquisition first on sounds, then grammar, and then vocabulary. The brain forms neural pathways in response to the language it encounters. Studies show that even limited exposure to a second language before the age of one makes a difference in the development of those neural pathways.

12.01.2022 This is great! Learn Chinese characters using Memrise. Memrise encourages you to create a mnemonic, which it calls a "mem", for every word you want to learn. A mem could be a rhyme, an image, a video or just a note about the word's etymology, or something striking about its pronunciation. In the case of languages such as French and Chinese, where there are thousands of people learning it at any one time, you can browse through a catalogue of mems created by other members of t...he Memrise community. This is especially fun for Chinese, where users have uploaded videos of various logographic characters morphing into cartoons of the words they represent. I'm currently doing Ben Whately's "Learn Basic Mandarin Chinese" http://www.memrise.com/courses/english/chinese-4/
