25.01.2022 Hey Mamas, we need your help! If you, or someone you know has a 12-18 year old girl we would love you to ask them to participate in our study about girls's school and club sport uniforms. This is the first national Australian study about how body image impacts on girls uniform preferences and sport enjoyment. ... I'm sure we can all remember the distinct feeling of our netball skirts and other sports uniforms- let's help to create change for our girls! Please send this on to anyone that you think might be able to participate! https://vuau.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6fByIMMtcDa1FS5 Please Share widely in Australia.

24.01.2022 It's part of the way that women are wired- we have critical thoughts about ourselves, and then we voice them out loud in order to seek reassurance and approval from others... Except that we get so used to being critical about our bodies that it all becomes very automated. And it's just not a great idea for our kids to be exposed to these critical thoughts if we want them to grow up with more body confidence than we had... ... Experts agree that we should avoid talking negatively about our bodies in front of our kids- even your kids as young as 2 or 3... We know it's hard, but it's worth it! ******************************************************* This infographic was based on the article that BCM's Dr Laura Hart contributed to: "What your kids hear when you criticise your body", published in the Huffington Post article at this link: https://www.huffingtonpost.com.au//what-kids-hear-parent-c ********************************************************

14.01.2022 Task for today: Unfollow or mute any accounts that make you feel bad about your body. This includes anyone posting: - before and afters as 'inspiration', - fitspo... - images of thin or slim models - anything that makes you compare your body to the photo. Back when we were teenagers, we were exposed to these things because huge media companies owned the magazines that we read (hello 'Dolly' magazine fans!)... We couldn't personally do anything about that, but now we can. There is now evidence to show that looking at these images doesn't inspire us to lose weight, be active, or be healthier, they just create more shame around our weight and our bodies. Fix your feed today!

13.01.2022 This week our Body Confident Mums story comes from Anthea, who explores her experiences of her body image as a woman with a disability, and then adding motherhood to the mix. Read the full story here: https://www.bodyconfidentmums.org/blog-1/categories/stories... We are still seeking story sharers and contributors from a wide range of diverse backgrounds, to create a community that understands what mammahood feels like from so many different perspectives. 12.01.2022 The Body Confident Mums team are busy working away on developing a Continuing Education program for health professionals who work with mums in those first few years... We've got all of the stats, we've got the evidence, we've got all of the things that we want to recommend that they do and say. What's missing? Your story... ... When we use stories of real people, it helps to bring everything together, and research shows that digital stories can help health professionals to engage emotionally with training programs, remember what they are taught, and implement it in their practice... Specifically, we need: - Stories of how your body image was affected during pregnancy - Stories about how women feel about their bodies immediately after birth - Stories of how the things that health professionals (think midwives, child health nurses, physios, obstetricians, GP's, personal trainers etc) have said or done have impacted on your body image during pregnancy and teh postpartum period/ motherhood. Contact us to discuss sharing your story today! [email protected] #bodyimage #shareyourstory

12.01.2022 "I I share this because 5 years ago when I saw my postpartum body, I felt shame. I felt like I needed to tuck it and hide it away so no one would be uncomfortab...le or disgusted. 5 years ago I saw my body as a weakness. Now, my body is my strength. Now I share it because I’m proud of it. It’s remarkable how our bodies can grow and stretch but never break. I share this because this is postpartum and this is what I would’ve needed to see 5 years ago. I love what my body is capable of. Remember, your body is made to stretch, and bend, and grow. You are beautiful, your body is beautiful." : @veronicaahoney Dear postpartum body: I want to thank you for growing and supporting my baby. http://m.mother.ly/PR9ygJd

10.01.2022 Our #bodyconfidentmums story contributor this week, Wendy, writes about body image and being biracial... Wendy sent me this quote that she relates to by Meghan Markle: "... You had to check one of the boxes to indicate your ethnicity: white, black, Hispanic, or Asian. There I was (my curly hair, my freckled face, my pale skin, my mixed race) looking down at these boxes, not wanting to mess up but not knowing what to do. You could only choose one, but that would be to choose one parent over the otherand one half of myself over the other. My teacher told me to check the box for Caucasian. 'Because that's how you look, Meghan.' " We're sharing stories of body image, identity, and motherhood on our Body Confident Mums blog to help us connect as women, mothers, and humans. To share our experiences so that no-one feels alone, and everyone feels heard. read Wendy's full story here: https://bit.ly/32fdX4r *********** If you would like to share your story of your thoughts and feelings about your body, and how motherhood has changed that, reach out to us at [email protected].

10.01.2022 People seem to think that you have to be hard on yourself to achieve weight loss... But we love the idea that self compassion can improve body image, which can improve all other areas of physical and mental health. AND there's research to prove it!... A recent review has brought together all of the research and studies about the impact of self compassion interventions on body weight, body image, and eating disorders. Self-compassion interventions were found to have beneficial effects on a range of outcomes in people at a wide range of BMI's, including: weight loss (Mantzios and Wilson 2014, 2015a), improved nutrition behaviours (Braun et al. 2012), reduced dietary disinhibition (Adams and Leary 2007) and reduced risk factors for these behaviours, such as body dissatisfaction (Albertson et al. 2015). Here at BCM, we believe that behaviours are more important for health than weight, but we know that weight is still important to some people especially mums in the postpartum year who are conscious of how pregnancy and motherhood has changed their weight and shape. Could you be kinder to yourself to meet your mental and physical health goals? ********************************************************** Reference: Rahimi-Ardabili, H., Reynolds, R., Vartanian, L. R., McLeod, L. V. D., & Zwar, N. (2018). A systematic review of the efficacy of interventions that aim to increase self-compassion on nutrition habits, eating behaviours, body weight and body image.
