06.01.2022 Today is Mabo day, a day to celebrate the decision that first recognised land rights of the traditional owners of the Murray Islands, the Meriam people. The case also famously overturned the myth of ‘terra nullius’. The Murdoch Student Law Society recognises the Whadjuk people of the Noongar nation as the traditional owners and custodians of the land upon which the society is constituted. We acknowledge the special and continuing connection to country held by the Noongar pe...ople and respect the knowledge and laws that traditional elders and aboriginal people in this place hold and pass on from generation to generation. We regret that racial descrimination, arising from colonial rule, has been used to justify indigenous dispossession, socio-economic repression, and the creation of the legal system that still to this day does not provide indigenous people with equal access to justice.
