25.01.2022 Rural and regional Australia is at the front line of climate change. After living through drought and this summer’s devastating bushfires, Basin communities have a critical role to play in the management of their resources to ensure the Basin is sustainable, vibrant and prosperous. Food producers and the environment need to work together. Join us for a chat with Tim Flannery, chief councillor of the Australian The Climate Council, as he discusses ‘Water and sustainability: A...ustralia, the big picture’ on Monday 14 September 2020. 25.01.2022 Brilliant meeting in Region 2 earlier this month, attended by Greater Shepparton City Council, Federation Council, Edward River Council, and Berrigan Shire Council. At the meeting, MDA CEO Emma Bradbury commended Region 2 on the contribution to the AGM motions, which will set the direction for the year ahead: "We’ve had positive feedback on the presentations, but for me the strength of the conference occurred in the calibre of the motions that were passed and the processes t...hat underpinned that. And I think nowhere more so than in Region 2. I think seeing the motion for the 450 G get up is a result of Dennis’ leadership and a year or two’s worth of hard work to put forward the voice of the issues of these councils in this region. To see this motion get up nationally is an incredibly proud moment for me. I was really pleased for the councils of this region and commend region 2." 19.01.2022 2020 AGM resolves to seek representation of local government as a sector at the Murray-Darling Basin Ministerial Council in an advisory capacity, and at the Basin Official Committee in a contributory capacity to provide more direct local content in the decisions relating to the Murray Darling Basin.

18.01.2022 Decision to scrap further buybacks is based on agreed evidence of LGs and communities across the Basin. Lets work together now for smarter, sustainable water recovery. The health of the Basin depends on it, and there is too much at stake for diverse environmental and community interest not to be working together.

17.01.2022 For the first time in nearly 30 years, Australia is in a recession. Now more than ever, our future relies on local government and communities working together to build opportunities for a better future. Join us for this timely conversation with award-winning author Bruce Pascoe. Bruce’s presentation ‘Back on country to build an industry for native foods, grains and grasses’ is an unmissable opportunity for local government across the Basin. 16.01.2022 Another amazing day at the #MDA’s 76th National Conference Local Leadership: A National Priority. We heard an update on the Snowy 2.0 project and explored with Jody Swirepik how the Commonwealth Environmental Water Office manages their allocation of water through key parts of the Murray such as the Barmah Choke. Author and farmer Bruce Pascoe took us through his vision to kickstart an Australian native crop industry that protects our soil and provides employment for Aborigin...al people and his social enterprise Black Duck Foods. Shadow Minister for Environment and Water Terri Butler MP highlighted the importance of trust in meeting the challenges of the Basin and respecting it as a common property resource. Mick Keogh updated us on the progress of the ACCC investigation into water markets. He told us there are "black box" areas of the water market where information is hard to access and trace, and this reduces transparency. He also said water market brokers have less fiduciary responsibility than a real estate agent and can operate with significant conflicts of interest. A highlight was our panel discussion on the future of agriculture in the Basin, with Bruce Pascoe, Gunnedah Shire Council Mayor Jamie Chaffie, the NFF’s Fiona Simson and regional health and wellbeing researcher Dr Jacki Schirmer giving us the benefit of their experience and expertise. They spoke of how local councils, regions and individual farmers can together meet the challenges and seize the opportunities of sustaining the Basin as the food production powerhouse of Australia while protecting the beauty and abundance of her earth. We ended the day with Dr Schirmer who told us the wellbeing of people in the Basin was experiencing more changes in 2020 through COVID than she had seen before, especially in younger people and parents of schoolchildren. She reminded us that though pictures of wellbeing differ across the basin, social connections are strong in many areas. Reports of water conflict can give the impression of declining Basin communities, which is not necessarily the case. And a shout-out to the class of Striling East Primary School who joined us today and asked the speakers some tough questions! Quite a day! We wrap up tomorrow morning with Dr Carmel Pollino from the CSIRO and Minister for Resources, Water and Northern Australia Keith Pitt MP. 14.01.2022 Incredible range of speakers today for Day 1 of the Murray Darling Association's 76th National Conference Local Leadership: National Priorities. Discussions ranged over water infrastructure, water management, the social, economic and environmental effects of climate change and much, much more. Big and bold ideas such as the NFF's call for regional Australia to lead our post-COVID recovery, but also a recognition that many of the answers to our challenges can only be found at ...the local level. We showed a virtual study tour of the Barmah Choke and heard Sir Angus Houston describe the shared passion he sees for the future of the Basin. We heard how more people are moving from cities to regional areas, and the jobs and growth potential this has for regional and rural towns. See our slideshow of key quotes from the conference so far. 06.01.2022 Absolutely beautiful photos of the Western Riverina, which has been absolutely transformed into a beautiful landscape of native wildflowers following winter rain. "I couldn't believe it when I saw how the daisies just spread probably for around 500 metres, just tiny white paper daisies and it was just beautiful," said school teacher and photographer Beth. "In past years I've only taken photos of dry, dusty paddocks and dust storms, so it's been a pleasant change," she said.... 05.01.2022 Thanks to our speakers, delegates and the City of Greater Shepparton for helping us deliver a hugely successful and thought-provoking 76th National Conference. The theme for this year was Local Leadership: A National Priority, and that message came through in many of our speakers’ presentations. Another strong theme that emerged was the need for more trust, transparency and respect we heard this from both the Government and the Opposition, as well as senior public servants,... researchers, and agricultural and community leaders. Our speakers spoke of the need to care for the environments of the river and the Basin, and for local communities to have a stronger role in decisions affecting their future. Most of all, we heard that despite challenges, the future for the Basin, and its place as Australia's food and textile production powerhouse, is bright if we care for the earth and the river that brings life to the plants, animals and communities, and if we collaborate to build a stronger future for all of us who love the Murray-Darling.
