25.01.2022 Does anybody recognise this dog. He is wandering around Mansell drive. Towards Washington drive. He has a black or brown collar. Seems quite friendly. Wanted to play with the dog I was walking but wouldn’t let me touch him so I could check for an id tag

15.01.2022 Our May obedience trial was due to be held next weekend. Obviously its been cancelled due to COVID19 social distancing requirements but maybe we can have some sort of online reunion to keep in touch. It would be great if we could get as many past competitors as possible to post a picture of their dogs that have entered our obedience trials over the years. Murray Valley have held obedience trials every year since June 1978, thats a lot of trials, so lets see how many past ...competitors we can get to post some pictures. At the time of our first trial, in Victoria, only pure breed dogs could compete, with the associate register coming into being a couple of years later. As soon as we were able (maybe 1979/80), I entered our family dog Trudi in Novice, I cant remember if we passed, but we did go on to gain our Novice dog (CD) title. This is a picture of Trudi in her training gear. See more

13.01.2022 Due to the reinstatement of Stage 3 COVID restrictions training will be cancelled until further notice. Hopefully this will only be for 6 weeks. We managed to squeeze in 5 weeks of classes, I know that my beginers class made great progress in that time. Keep up the good work, get in touch if you have any questions or want some ideas for other things to teach your pups.

10.01.2022 Some good advice on how to reduce treats

10.01.2022 Sadly there will be no training on Monday. The forecast temperature is 37 which is too hot to be training. Monday was the last scheduled training session for the year so unfortunately that's it until February 2021. Each year the club recognises members who have had success in various competitions, and also those who have made progress with their training. No one gained any competition titles this year but the following members kicked some goals with their dogs in what was a c...hallenging year. Encouragement awards go to Tyler and Edna and Dawn and Rogue - keep up the good work. Best attendance for the year was Carolyn and Luna, closely followed by Jessica and Sirbastion. As the fun night has been cancelled, Lyn and Bonnie will retain the fastest recall throne for another year. It took them a long time to claim it and I'm sure they will enjoy carrying on being the title holders. Stay safe, keep cool, and we'll see you next year.

10.01.2022 Training is on tonight

05.01.2022 Use your Manners! The Sniff test - Stop doing that! The sniff test - a badly engrained habit that society has been taught, without a clear understanding of ...what they're actually doing. When you reach out towards a dog, you are using body pressure AT them, giving them no time to assess whether you are safe & whether they require further investigation to pick up your information. You are forcing an interaction of a relationship that hasn't had time to develop. To some dogs, this is quite rude & the reason a lot of dogs snap at or bite people. This can cause alot of behavioral issues because of layered stress due to forced interactions. If they are on lead, they have no where to go if they are sensitive to spacial pressure, so can end up shutting down, shying away or snapping at your hand so you back off. This is an example of how a dog is now using pressure to turn off pressure & make you back off so they aren't so stressed. People think by offering your hand it can give the dog time to sniff to know you're friendly... they can sniff without being forced to sniff your hand.Their noses are far more superior than ours & they don't need close contact forced upon them to smell you. Some dogs might not want to know you. You have no relationship with them and that's perfectly fine. They aren't your dog so you don't need to touch them or steal pats for your own satisfaction. If you are meeting a dog, what should you do? Ask the owner if you can interact with their dog. Not all people want strangers touching their dogs. Especially strangers who you are unlikely to see again. Stand up straight & relaxed, with your hands at your side. Ignore the dog & talk to the owner. Don't stare at the dog & don't try to force an interaction by going in for a pat. If the dog wants to know you, it will come up to you & sniff around. Usually they will move away & then come back for a second sniffathon. Some dogs will bunt your hands & wag their tails, which are good signs that you're likely an accepted new friend. Give them a few slow pats down their back (NOT THEIR HEAD) & then stop. Is the dog happy? Has it accepted your interaction? This will determine whether you can give it more pats. This is a more stress free option for dogs & a reason why in consultations we can develop a good level of trust, especially with fearful dogs & aggressive dogs, without a bunch of negative side effects from forced interactions.
