08.01.2022 A report commissioned by the Christchurch City has identified 5971 homes in Christchurch and Banks Peninsula that could be vulnerable to erosion and almost 18,000 properties that could be susceptible to coastal flooding. It estimates the likely impact of a 40-centimetre sea level rise over the next 50 years and a 1-metre rise over the next 100 years on the Canterbury coastline. Through the Christchurch Replacement District Plan, the council is proposing to limit new developme...nt in the coastal areas considered most at risk. If the proposed approach is accepted residents will only be able to build in those areas if they can prove they can protect the properties from coastal hazards.
