21.01.2022 In honour of National Authors Day today, here’s a story about one of our favourite authors, whose work we hold in the Museums Victoria Library collections. Maria Sibylla Merian was a naturalist and scientific illustrator who was obsessed with metamorphosis from a young age and published her first book at the age of 28. In 1699, at the age of 52, Merian sold all of her art, wrote out her will (just in case) and travelled to Dutch Surinam in South America to study and record the insects of that country. Quite scandalously for the time, she travelled without a male chaperone! The resulting book, Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, or Insects of Surinam, is one of the most beautiful natural history publications and through her studies she discovered many new facts about insect life. A pioneering female author!

04.01.2022 For significant service to herpetological research, and to the museums' sector, Museums Victoria's Dr Jane Melville, senior curator of terrestrial vertebrates, is the recipient of the general division of the Order of Australia, announced yesterday. Dr Jane Melville began at Museums Victoria in 2002 while also holding an honorary position at the School of Biosciences, University of Melbourne. Jane's research combines field-based studies on reptiles and amphibians across conser...vation, genetics, ecology, taxonomy and evolution. Recently, Jane has released a paper highlighting the importance of prioritising taxonomic research for Australian reptiles. The study highlights that biodiversity loss among Australia’s reptiles is far greater than realised, and that conservation efforts must focus on identifying and classifying new species.
