24.01.2022 With Hinterlandt's 'Seven Tales' Blue Mountains album launch at Gallery ONE88 fast approaching on Saturday, December 19, Music in the Mountains would like to introduce Jochen Gutsch, the bandleader, composer, trumpeter, guitarist and percussionist behind Hinterlandt. A little about JOCHEN GUTSCH from Hinterlandt . . . Jochen Gutsch writes all the music and lyrics for Hinterlandt, and also plays guitar and trumpet in the group. He grew up in Germany but has lived in Sydney wit...h his partner and their two boys for more than a decade. In addition to the purely acoustic ensemble Hinterlandt, he explores his ‘louder’ side in the prog-dub trio No Mandate, collaborates on experimental sound art projects, and works as a cultural programmer for the Goethe-Institut. Jochen has released more than 30 albums of original music and has performed in London, Berlin, Bangkok, Melbourne, Hamburg, Jakarta, Helsinki, Kuala Lumpur, Cologne, Hobart, Singapore, Rome, Amsterdam, Brisbane, Lisbon, Sydney, and many other places. Slack-Off Sundays: We know what you're thinking - you're at home in isolation and missing your usual Sunday Night fix at Aunty Ed's (wouldn't you just love a 'Cheese Louise' & chips right now!). Well, you're in luck as Aunty Ed's, Music in the Mountains, and some of our favourite musicians are proud to present Slack-Off Sundays ...in Isolation. Enjoy free live music every Sunday from 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm live-streamed to your own lounge room. Our artists are generously donating their time to entertain you from the living rooms, and we will be posting a link each week where you can make a donation, give a tip, or a contribution directly to the musician. This week, the Lounge Catz will be performing for you. Like what you hear? Send James & Matt a tip (link coming soon). The Lounge Catz are Adrian Symes (on sax) and Boris Hunt (on flugelhorn & accompaniment). Adrian and Boris have played together in many ensembles however more recently have been instrumental (all puns intended) in the K-Town Funky Horns. For this performance, the Lounge Catz will take the free swingin' sound of the Funky Horns, and distil it towards a smoother and laid back texture. Wanna dance? Put your feet up? Either way, the Lounge Catz have got your covered!

09.01.2022 We recently said goodbye to another musician in the Blue Mountains, the one and only Matthew Dennett - Pianist. 'Master Dennett' has moved to Canberra and we wish him well. Matt was actually the first musician to play at Hotel Blue after it was reopened (Matt performed at a Wedding we were hosting) and was a regular blow-in to tickle the ivories from that day. Expect to see Matt around as he will be dropping by monthly for a gig or two, but Matt will be missed in the meantime! As a musician, Matt has a talent and genuine passion for music and teaching, and as a mate - I think I will miss Matt's impromptu visits for a beer/milkshake and a yarn most. Made up of the two-handed, John Stuart, and the single-handed, Neill Duncan - between them they play guitar, bass, congas, drums and saxophone, all at the same time. Megaphone vocals included, this beat combo swing their listeners through a kaleidoscope of musical styles, including reggae, ska, calypso, funk, swing, and a little klezmer thrown in for good measure. Beautiful to the ear. Great for the feet. Neill ...Duncan is one of New Zealand’s most exciting and eccentric musical exports. His natural talent was almost cut short in 2016 when he lost his left arm to cancer. Proving you can’t keep a great musician quiet, Neill now plays a bespoke, one-handed tenor saxophone, designed and built in Amsterdam. As if that weren’t impressive enough, he also plays an adapted drum kit, a megaphone, and a few additional weird and wonderful instruments that thrill crowds Australia-wide. John Stuart is a master of the seven-string guitar. That one extra string lets John cover the bass lines as well as the chords that accompany the Bandit’s wide repertoire. At any given time, you can see John switching between driving bass lines and sparkling melodies.Not to be outdone by his single-handed collaborator, John also adds dynamic South American rhythms to the mix with mighty conga playing that gets every crowd up and jumping. 01.01.2022 On Saturday Night, live music returned to Gallery ONE88 Fine Arts. As usual the performance was sensational - Gary Daley music & James Greening put on a wonderful show, however I feel the best part was just how normal the entire experience felt. That might sound underwhelming, but in what has been a tumultuous year, this event was an intimate Saturday Night out, complete with an audience of music appreciators, great food, amazing music and friends. All these things a year ago... wouldn't have been anything to shout about (as we're pretty lucky about the calibre of live music in the Mountains) however this weekend . . . it just felt right! I thank everyone who came along to our sold-out performance - this little COVID-safe event was just a wonderful night and Music in the Mountains, Gallery ONE88, Gary Daley & James Greening thank our audience for breathing life back into live music. Just remember - live music isn't dead, it just went into hibernation.
