21.01.2022 Just a few images of my Dark Dorkings at just on 26 weeks old. Still have growing to do, but are exceptionally large and heavy. Feel free to comment.

18.01.2022 A free-range poultry farm near Lethbridge has tested positive for a strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza. The property is under quarantine and Restricted and Control areas are now in place across Golden Plains Shire. If you live in these areas and have birds, know the requirements and follow them. Take simple measures to keep your birds apart from any wild birds, such as preventing access to domestic birds food, and if they are sick please contact your vet or report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888. https://agriculture.vic.gov.au//p/avian-influenza-bird-flu

17.01.2022 I’m deliberately running my breeding season late this year. I just get better results from my setup in milder weather than if I force it earlier. So with that in mind, I’ve just placed the Red Dorking breeding pen together, (one Cockerel and five Pullets) and my Standard Anconas (one Cockerel and five Pullets). The three Bantam Ancona Pullets are in with two Cockerels because they’re both lovely boys. I do need to remove one Cockerel though, so I know who dad is... My Dark Dorkings are going to be last. I have my best Cockerel selected, and I’ll pop him in with five Pullets in about a fortnight. Both the Red and the Dark Cockerels have been selected from a huge field of males that I fed for between 6 and 8 months so I could cast a very critical eye over them, plus, select the quietest and sweetest natured boys.

17.01.2022 Only ten minutes ago, my first actual Red Dorking Pullet has hatched. The chick down is a beautiful burgundy colour with jet black head markings. This is the culmination of 4 years of planning and breeding. It’s very exciting.

15.01.2022 Photos to follow, but my Red Dorking Pullets at 3 weeks old are feathering up according to how they are meant to, as in the UK. They appear identical to the colouring and markings of the British Red Dorkings. Breeding them up properly, right from the beginning is proving to be worthwhile. I appear to have at least 6 correctly marked females with pure white legs and the correct 5 toes (with a rising fifth toe). I have bred sufficient to be able to cull anything not a superb ex...ample of the breed. Photos will follow when they feather up a touch more so we can really see what we really have. See more

15.01.2022 My Bride has been helping me to worm this season’s youngsters. I’ve been using Noromectin on the back of their neck and under the wing. It’s an excellent wormer, kills all of the mites, including leg mites. It doesn’t cover Tapeworm but in between the doses of Ivermectin I use Wormout tablets. I catch the birds, Janet holds them for me and I apply the dose, using a 1ml syringe. Yesterday I sold off the Ancona Pullets that I didn’t want to keep for breeding, which left me with... 5 Pullets and 2 Cockerels, and now they’ve been ‘serviced’ ready for the breeding pen. We did the Bantams too. I selected 3 Pullets and 2 Cockerels for the breeding pens. We wormed the Red Dorking project birds, 5 Pullets, 3 Cockerels (why so many Cockerels? Because I can’t backtrack if anything happens to 1 or 2 males. It’s insurance) They’re all snug and warm in deep, clean straw and shavings, ready for a cold Winter. Roll on Spring!

14.01.2022 Just a record of the breeding path of my Red Dorking project birds. The basis of the Red Dorkings is this Silver-Grey Hen photographed here with her daughter, the F1 hen. The F1 Red hen was mated with a pure AVGEN Dark Dorking Cockerel, sourced from South Australia. The pure Dark Dorking infusion of bloodlines was necessary to give the F3 chicks hatched this year (2020) the very dark appearance of the British Red Dorkings. The single Pullet is the daughter of the Red Hen in the previous image.

11.01.2022 I have two large Brooder Boxes for sale. I made them from half-tonne Potato Boxes, lined them with Masonite and sealed the joins with silicone sealant. I made a mesh lid made from 20mm galvanised box section steel and hinged them to access the chicks. Each box has a large Aluminium parabolic brooder heater with a 100w ceramic globe. Height easily adjusted. They will fit on a 6x4’ Box Trailer, the lid can be easily removed for transport. I want $195.00 each or $170.00 each for... both. I’m in Mirboo in South Gippsland. 0412 076 578. Inspection by appointment. See more

09.01.2022 Large Ancona eggs from my Champion lines. Bantam Ancona eggs from my Melbourne Royal-Canberra Royal Champion lines. Dark Dorking eggs from the AVGEN lines.... The Dorkings contain NOAdam Fontana (mixed Dorking-Barnevelder-Orpington blood). Small quantities of eggs only. My breeding pens are small this year, and only contain the very best, hand-picked breeding birds. Cockerels used have passed the temperament test. I only use calm natured boys for breeding. $100.00 Doz. Plus packing and Express Post. Collection from our farm is encouraged for optimum results. Ph: 0412 076 578 (or Text) We're located in South Gippsland, Victoria.

08.01.2022 My Red Dorking project Pullets have laid for the first time today. I've been eagle-eyeing their nest box for the last month in anticipation of 'egg colour'. It's not a Dorking if it lays dark brown eggs, anymore than a Marans is a Marans if it lays white eggs. The Indian Game component of two generations ago, he that generously donated the Gold gene, along with Mahogany and Autosomal Red, also left behind quite a dark tinted egg from his daughters. I've been sweating on egg colour. Our pure AVGEN Dark Dorking Cockerel has influenced his daughters and they're producing 'white' or very lightly cream tinted eggs. I'm stoked. Edited to add: I weighed the eggs on my digital kitchen scales. 44 Grams. Comments welcome. :)

05.01.2022 Gippsland Poultry People! Please be aware that there have been several major incidences of poultry theft over the last week or so. Total clean-outs of stock. It seems that certain people have been targeted for the variety of birds they carry. Lock up your valuable birds folks, to slow the thieves down. We have movement sensitive lighting, movement sensitive video surveillance and two dogs that let us know that all is not well.... Anyone found on my property will be dealt with accordingly. The Police won’t be involved. Have I made myself clear? See more

04.01.2022 I haven’t been able to find my RCOM egg candler and I’ve looked (almost) everywhere. This means that my incubation and hatching this year has been taken on faith. Luckily, the birds are very fertile and the eggs are able to actually hatch a live chick. I’ve got chicks everywhere. As usual, the Anconas are at the forefront with the Bantams leading as they always do. The Red Dorkings are hot on their heels.

03.01.2022 I'm very pleased with the egg laying abilities of my Red Dorking Project Girls. They began laying a few weeks ago with 44 gram eggs, and now they're over the 50gm threshold with 53 & 54gm eggs. I'm particularly pleased because their mothers lay very large 70gm+ eggs and lots of them. The cross out to Indian Game fired up some latent egg laying ability which was a surprise because neither breed would compete with Anconas, but they lay like champions. I was hoping that that characteristic would breed on.

01.01.2022 These tiny eggs arrived this morning, courtesy of the Bantam Ancona pullets. They were hatched in the first week of October 2020, making them 17 weeks old. I’m ...constantly amazed at the Bantam Anconas in both production and egg size when mature. It takes three of their eggs to match 2 regular eggs but there are so many of them! They are fabulous little birds for egg production. AA Battery added for scale. See more
