22.01.2022 C A M B O D I A ' S C L O U D E D L E O P A R D The clouded leopard is a reclusive, nocturnal cat that spends most of its time up in trees; its ecology is largely unknown. Even though there are only few observations in Cambodia, the presence of this enigmatic carnivore has been confirmed by camera traps in the Eastern Plains Landscape of Cambodia’s Mondulkiri province. Like most cats, the clouded leopard is under threat due to hunting for the wildlife trade and loss of it...s habitat, the evergreen forest. Clouded leopards are found from the Himalayas down to southern China, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Burma, Nepal, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. This beautiful animal is a target for hunters and poachers and is popular in the illegal pet trade. The destruction of their habitat has also contributed to their decline. Scientists and conservationists are currently working to understand more about their numbers, but it’s difficult because clouded leopards are nocturnal and very reclusive. It is made up of five islands; Gaya, Manukan, Sapi, Sulug and Mamutik. As the islands are only a short boat ride away from Kota Kinabalu it is a popular destination among day-trippers (locals and tourists) for swimming, snorkelling, diving etc... The five islands that make up the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park are all located within a short boat ride from each other. Gaya and Manukan are the biggest islands within the marine park. Fly larvae cheese, known as Casu Marzu hails from Sardinia and is now illegal. A truely authentic Italian experience, Sardianians claim the cheese is an aphrodisiac, enjoying it at weddings and other celebrations. Casu Marzu develops when cheese fly larvae are introduced into Pecorino to promote advanced fermentation. As the larvae hatch and eat through the cheese, it softens - a 2 to 3 month process. Diners have to dig in before the maggots die. The best comparison that can be made is to the taste of a very ripe gorgonzola cheese.
