23.01.2022 As you may know, today is a very special day for the French. The 14th July is "Bastille Day" (more on that later) which celebrates the storming of the Bastille Prison. Voici* five fun facts you may not know. 1- The Bastille has a very long history: In 1370, it was built and used as a fortress in Paris, France. Its purpose was to defend France against England during the Hundred Years' War. It became a prison in 1417. 2-In France, it is not called "Bastille Day" at all, but "La... Fête Nationale"*, or more casually "le quatorze juillet" (14th July). 3- La Fête Nationale commemorates both July 14th, 1789 and July 14th, 1790 which is la Fête de la Fédération*. 4- It didn't become a national French holiday until 1880, thus taking 91 years for Bastille Day to become a celebration. 5-There are many ways to celebrate the day, particularly if you are in France. You could watch the parade on TV, enjoy a spectacular fireworks display at La Tour Eiffel* followed by a party au pied du monument* or if you're extremely lucky, you may find yourself invited to Le Bal des Pompiers - yes, you read it right, A Fireman's Ball, which is held in each arrondissement or village around France. *Here are | *National Day | *Federation Day | *The Eiffel Tower | *at the foot of the monument
