23.01.2022 How the Seizure alert - My Medic Watch app works.

22.01.2022 It’s not too late to donate to Australia’s Walk for Epilepsy This October, more than 1,200 people from around Australia (and even overseas) came together to raise vital funds as part of the Walk for Epilepsy. This year’s event was a 25 day virtual event, where people were encouraged to come together and walk (or even run, ride, swim or wheel) and together they reached just over 25,000km around Australia to raise awareness and support for the 1 in 25 Australians living with ep...ilepsy. To date, this incredible initiative has raised over $280,000 and it’s not too late to donate! If you’d like to make a contribution, you can do so until 30 October 2020. You can read more about the event here. You can also follow the Epilepsy Foundation Epilepsy Foundation of Australia and read more about the walk at #walkwithme.

22.01.2022 Staying Safe Over The Festive Season After a very strange year, people all over the world are hoping to spend the festive season with friends and family. In many countries, there are still restrictions in place, and it’s essential that any gatherings are in accordance with government recommendations. Also, to ensure we protect older and vulnerable members of our community, it’s important to keep some simple precautions top of mindO #mymedicwatch #covid19 #ageing ... For older people in care facilities, or those living in their own homes, 2020 has been a very isolating and unsettling time. As many people are set to gather with friends and extended family to celebrate the festive season, it’s important to keep some simple precautions top of mind: Limit social interactions Where possible, it is worth considering opting for a chat over the phone, video call or email rather than visits in person. Consider tele-health Ask if you or your loved one can ‘meet’ with a doctor, nurse or other health professional via phone or videoconference, rather than going into a practice. Seeking online meal delivery Shopping centres and supermarkets can be particularly busy over the festive season and are therefore best to be avoided as much as possible. There are a range of charitable organisations that offer food supplies (for example, Meals on Wheels (1) in Australia) and online supermarket shopping can be an ideal option for older or vulnerable people. Get help when needed If you or a loved one is struggling with isolation, it’s important to reach out and ask for help especially at this time of year. (1) https://mealsonwheels.org.au/

04.01.2022 New report reveals 77% of older people want to keep living in their own homes as they age but only 50% believe they will 2020 has been a very isolating time for many; particularly older people still living in their own homes. Falls, and fall-related injuries, are among the leading causes of hospitalisation for the elderly population. To stay living independently, peace of mind is essential. This is where the My Medic Watch (MMW) app can help. The app is installed on a user...’s smartwatch and smartphone and his/her caregivers’ smartphones. If the person suffers a fall or a seizure, the app immediately detects it using the smartwatch’s sensor and the app’s clinically-tested and patent-protected algorithm, and sends an alert to caregivers keeping them continually up to date regarding the status. MMW is available on Android, iOS and Tizen, and is compatible with most commercial smartwatches. It’s also the only app of its kind that can be customised to a person’s specific medical history and needs. 02.01.2022 Rehabilitation after a fall. As we age, the prospect of losing control and falling over can be extremely daunting, and potentially quite dangerous. According to the "Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Healthcare" (1), one in three older Australians will experience a fall each year. "Evidence also suggests" (2) that once a person has had one fall, they’re at increased risk of another.... Regardless of the severity of a fall, rehabilitation is an important consideration - where the older person undertakes a range of guided physical activities, either in their own home or a care facility, to help them regain the mobility they had before the fall occurred. A qualified medical professional will formally assess the person to determine whether or not a rehabilitation program is required - and if so, what this program should involve. Even when a fall hasn’t resulted in any significant injury, an ongoing fear of falling, and associated reduced activity level, can start to affect an older person’s confidence and quality of life. For this reason, it’s important to encourage them to safely regain their movement even when no formal rehabilitation program is recommended. My Medic Watch can also be an important tool in helping older people regain their confidence and independence. Visit www.mymedicwatch.com to find out more or contact [email protected]. 02.01.2022 Coming soon....

02.01.2022 How and why should you choose a caregiver The My Medic Watch app can potentially save the life of someone who has experienced a fall or seizure. However, this does rely on having a reliable team of caregivers in place, who can respond quickly and effectively. So how do you choose the right caregivers either for you or a loved one? #carers #nationalcarersweek #mymedicwatch A few weeks ago, Australians celebrated National Carers Week recognising th...e 2.65 million Australians who provide care and support to a family member or a friend. At My Medic Watch, we recognise the extremely important role that caregivers play in enabling older people to stay in their homes for longer, and maintain a sense of independence. When a person decides to use the My Medic Watch app, one of the first step is nominating a caregiver, or a team of caregivers, who can respond should the person experience a fall or a seizure. These caregivers play an extremely important role in ensuring that the person gets the help they need. As such, it’s important to choose caregivers who are: Technically literate (to at least a basic degree) and are able to respond to the notifications they receive via the app. Responsive and reliable, and likely to carry their phone and prioritise providing assistance, or notifying the rest of the caregiving team if they are unavailable. Trained and informed regarding what to do should they arrive at the location of someone who has experienced a fall or seizure, and aware of the vital next steps.
