25.01.2022 We have just received confirmation that dental practices in metropolitan Melbourne are to operate under Level 2 Restrictions from Wednesday, 15th July 2020. For @myofocusmelbourne this means: - if you have #COVID19 risks, please call us to reschedule your appointments, and/or defer your treatment.... - we will ask you repetitively the COVID19 screening questions. - wait in the car when you arrive, call us and we will let you know when we are ready for you to enter our premises. - hand sanitize upon entering our clinic. - we will continuously disinfect all surfaces multiple times throughout each day. - short gaps will be implemented in between patient appointments to allow time for extra cleaning and minimizing number of people in the waiting room. - strict maximum number of people inside the premises and in each room within the clinic. - social distancing as much as possible within our premises. - all team members will wear masks at all times. - we can continue to perform examinations, consults, x-ray taking, orthodontics and orofacial myofunctional preorthodontics. - we can continue to perform oral restriction (tongue, lip, cheek ties) releases with our laser. 17.01.2022 The Dental Practice Restrictions have now been eased from today to Level 1. This means we can offer all of our services as normal. Nevertheless, your safety is our priority, so we have zoned our waiting lounge into 4: one zone per family. This ensures #socialdistancing measures are in place. 08.01.2022 After completing her active #orofacial #myofunctional #preorthodontics a few years ago, the eldest daughter of #drdonny has just begun her #invisalign journey to simply align her adult teeth and occlusion. The #preorthodontic treatment corrected the functions of the muscles of her mouth and face, allowing her jaws to widen naturally to their maximum unique potential, while they still had the potential to grow. 06.01.2022 Lets get to know Dr. Richard Hu!!! He was interviewed a couple of days ago, but the audio didnt work out. It went like this: Q. How long have you been a dentist for, Dr. Richard?... A. I graduated in 2007 from The University of Sydney. Q. What would you say is your passion in dentistry? A. My passion is to treat children early with their jaw growth, to help them achieve health. Q. Why treat early? A. Well, by 6 years old, the jaws have completed their growth by about 50%. By 11 years old, the jaws have completed growth by 90%. So, its important to treat while they still have good potential to grow. Q. How do you make the jaws grow? A. It is crucial to treat the factors that influence the growth. In the case of the jaws, the muscles of the mouth and face need to function as ideally as possible. The tongue needs to be up against the palate at rest and at function, swallow properly, lips closed and breathe through the nose. Q. So, how do you correct the functions of these muscles? A. They need to be trained with exercises. I prescribe exercises according to the dysfunctions and improve the muscle functions over time. Its a bit like going to the gym for the mouth. Q. Its hard enough to do exercises, let alone getting children to do them?!?! A. Yes, its not easy. However, I am a big kid myself and I connect with them on their levels. I tend to be playful, get them to understand why, and praise the positives. So, its motivating for them and they continue to get motivated. Q. Do you have any kids? A. Yes, I have a daughter who is 6 months old. Lots of practice changing nappies because she poops a lot! Hahaha... Q. Is this treatment what you would call orthodontics? A. Well, orthodontics are straightening adult teeth. What I am doing is developing the jaws by correcting the muscle functions, way earlier than when the children have all their adult teeth. I would call this pre-orthodontics. Plus, by helping the jaws to grow to their maximum potentials, usually that means minimizing braces or aligners to straighten the adult teeth later. Q. How long have you been doing pre-orthodontics? A. 10 years by now. Q. You dont think this is science fiction, just like your name suggests, Dr. Hu (Dr. Who)? A. Definitely not! This is science fact! Ive seen the results myself and continue to see them. Q. Do you prefer to be called Dr. Richard or Dr. Hu? A. If you cant remember my name and are thinking who is that doctor...then Dr. Hu (Dr. Who) becomes easier. Either is fine with me... 12.11.2021 SIZE MATTERS I received a few t-shirts from @munchee_movement today, introducing their brand new #munchee characters. Unfortunately, these t-shirts are just a b...it small for me to wear. I will give them away to a few lucky children patientsonly if they’ve been compliant, of course The Munchee is one #orofacial #myofunctional device that I prescribe the most. It’s great for chewing to: - activate and train the muscles of mastication to function correctly. - develop tongue and lip strengths. - stimulating saliva production to clean and oxygenate the teeth and gums. It also is great for passive wear to : - promote nasal breathing. - direct jaw growth and development. - improve dental malocclusion. The Munchee can also be an effective alternative in eliminating parafunctional habits, such as sucking on the pacifier or thumbs. The one thing that I always make sure is to get the size of the Munchee correct when I prescribe it to a patient. This device is soft, made of medical-grade silicone, and I want it to be a little bit larger than the jaws, so that the jaws can naturally grow into it. Munchees come in different sizes. 02.11.2021 TIME HEALS I did not post anything for a month because I took the time to heal. Healing is a process. When our body, mind and/or spirit get wounded, tired and/...or overwhelmed, often we only need time to heal. Just like when a #tonguetie gets released. There is no such thing as an instant or immediate healing and improvement. The tongue is connected to the body. If it is restricted functionally, then there is a good chance that other parts of the body are compensating for it. Before a tongue tie release, the body and the #tongue need to be prepared. After the release, the body and the tongue need to be rehabilitated. As wounds heal, functions change. Guiding the healing process in the right direction is crucial in improving the function optimally. I needed time to recover. I reconnected with nature. I exercised more. I rested to free up my head space. And after a month, I’m able to function optimally again. Take the time to heal #drdonny
