24.01.2022 Why has Myopia Clinic Melbourne been booked out for the past few months? The prevalence and rate of myopia progression in young children have skyrocketed, in part due to the COVID-19 lockdown, staying indoors and remote learning in 2020. If your child has myopia, or shortsightedness, see us without delay to help preserve their eyesight. Effective myopia control interventions can slow and even halt the progression of myopia.... #myopia #shortsighted #shortsightedness #myopiacontrol #myopiamanagment #melbourne #optometrist #myopiaclinic https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=oTZY76qdY4A

23.01.2022 Now you see it. Now you don’t. Hoya MiyoSmart myopia control glasses with DIMS technology. Special lenses that look and feel normal. Kids see clearly and adapt seamlessly to these new glasses.... But look closely - these are so much more than regular glasses. A 33mm-wide defocus zone, filled with a honeycomb pattern of multiple segments, helps to slow the growth of the eye to reduce myopia progression. #HOYA #MiyoSmart #DIMS #glasses #myopiacontrol #myopiamanagement #myopia #shortsight #treatment #children #eyehealth #optometrist #myopiaclinic #melbourne

22.01.2022 How to insert OrthoK lenses. Thanks to Sara, an experienced OrthoK wearer of more than 2 years, for this demonstration while getting fitted with her new set of lenses.

22.01.2022 Our children's optometrist Philip Cheng explains to 9 News the effects that screen time is having on young children's eyes during the COVID-19 lockdown in Melbourne. More children are presenting with eye problems such as myopia (short-sightedness) and dry eye, but these effects can be attributed to excess time spent on close-up tasks rather than exposure to blue light from digital devices. We recommend regular, annual eye tests for children, particularly if there a...re any new symptoms, or a family history of eye conditions. And to take regular breaks from screens. Remember the 20/20/20 rule: for every 20 minutes of near work, take a 20 second break to look at something 20 metres away to relax the eyes. When possible, spend more time outside - at least 90 minutes of outdoor time per day is recommended. Near work and indoor time are both factors linked to the development and progression of child myopia. While blue light blocking glasses are the latest craze, they are not a band-aid solution . There is currently insufficient evidence that these glasses are beneficial for children in terms of eye health. The amount of blue light emitted from digital screens is not at a level harmful to children's eyes. But blue light, particularly later in the day, can affect the body clock and sleep cycle , so there may be benefits in improving sleep quality . However, a recent study has found that simply switching on the night-mode function on smartphones is more effective than blue light glasses: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32168244/ The following is an article outlining the view of the Australian board of ophthalmologists (RANZCO) on the current evidence of blue light blocking glasses: https://www.insightnews.com.au/ranzco-outlines-stance-on-b/ Video footage courtesy of 9 News Melbourne https://youtu.be/F9zdlVZLNbE

20.01.2022 Melbourne's COVID lockdown hasn't done children's eyes any good. All the extra screen time, indoor activities, virtual learning and lack of outdoor time are contributing to an avalanche of #myopia (short-sightedness). This visual environment is causing abnormal elongation in young growing eyes. We have noticed a huge rise in kids with eye problems, kids diagnosed with myopia at a younger age, and faster progression for children who already have myopia, wearing regular gla...sses and not been recommended appropriate interventions. This 8 year old girl who came to see us recently had her prescription increase from -3.00 to -5.00 in just 6 months! Thankfully her parents discovered this clinic and she is now receiving the treatments she needs to control her myopia and help slow her rapid vision deterioration. With our precision-designed and beautifully fitted #orthokeratology (OrthoK) night-time lenses, which gently reshape and flatten the surface of her eye, she's gone from -5.00 to 20/20 vision without glasses in just 3 nights! #myopiaclinic #myopia #myopiamanagement #myopiacontrol #shortsight #kids #vision #eyehealth #glasses #orthok #oklens #optometrist #melbourne #COVID19 #screentime

17.01.2022 In what has been some of the busiest ever weeks at Myopia Clinic Melbourne, it’s been a great privilege to help so many children who have recently developed myopia (short-sightedness) and those with worsening degrees of myopia. Congratulations to Simran and her parents on making the smart choice to start myopia management, to help prevent her eyesight from worsening. Treating both the symptoms and the condition. We prescribe DIMS lenses as one of our effective, evidence-based treatments for myopia control, which also include overnight OrthoK lenses, multifocal contact lenses and atropine eye drops. #myopiacontrol #myopiamanagement #myopia #shortsight #miyosmart #DIMS #orthok #oklens #misight #atropine #optometrist #myopiaclinic #melbourne

12.01.2022 Lauren from Doncaster is one of many children recently diagnosed with myopia (short-sightedness) and wearing glasses for the first time. But Lauren’s new glasses are no ordinary glasses. 11.01.2022 Lockdown myopia is real. Chinese researchers have found a significant rise in childhood myopia in 2020, as a result of lockdown and home quarantine from the COVID-19 pandemic. The prevalence of myopia in 6 year olds was found to have increased by almost 400%!! ... This confirms the observations here at Myopia Clinic Melbourne, the sudden rise in children diagnosed with myopia and those with substantial progression have overwhelmed this clinic over the past few months. We note that children who have been receiving myopia control treatment and proper management have had much less progression during this time - and in many cases no progression - compared to children who previously had no myopia treatment and wearing regular single-vision glasses. https://www.optometry.org.au//significant-jump-in-childho/

10.01.2022 Last year Hana came to see us with worsening eyesight requiring new glasses every 6 months. Her parents wondered if it was the right thing to keep on changing glasses without doing anything more. One year on, with our custom-designed OrthoK lens treatment, her eyes have remained stable, with no further eye elongation and deterioration. It’s been a pleasure to help Hana on her life-changing myopia control journey, restoring clear vision without the need for glasses and, most... importantly, halting the rapid progression of her myopia. Thanks again for choosing the Myopia Clinic Melbourne.
