13.01.2022 With the Tour Down Under in town were seeing more and more cyclists hit the road While cycling is a fantastic, low impact way to keep fit, it isnt without risk of pain and injury due to its repetitive nature. Here are the 3 most common cycling related injuries we see at MyPhysio MyHealth... HAMSTRING - tight hamstrings are common in cyclists and can be caused by sudden efforts or simply pushing the muscles too hard, too soon. Dry needling can provide a quick release and can be very effective along with regular stretching to prevent the hamstring muscles from shortening. HIP FLEXORS - Hip flexor tightness or strains is common due to being in a sustained flexed position. Foam rolling and stretching the hips & quads will be beneficial. CALF - Your calves work hard to keep you pedalling which can lead to very tight calf muscles which are prone to cramping or even tearing. We find that dry needling the calf muscles, is fast and effective in its release. Most cycling injuries to the lower extremities tend to respond well to Dry Needling treatment, which is a very precise way of releasing a muscle in order to regain flexibility and reduce pain. In addition to dry needling a tailored rehabilitation program will improve strength and stability in order to prevent injury recurrence and keep you on the bike! NOTE: Many amateur cyclists may have improper form when cycling and may have issues with their bike setup (e.g. - seat height, handlebar orientation etc) which can contribute to injury. We recommend a professional bike fitting if you intend to spend many hours in the saddle.

We will raise and discuss strategies on how to properly address these problems if we believe they are impacting on the person’s overall wellbeing and recovery - so why, then, is there a perceived barrier to talking about mental health? https://bit.ly/2GKmnZe
