25.01.2022 COVID-19 (Coronavirus): Update 24 March 2019 My Supports will continue to provide our services to all our clients, however we will always follow latest Department of Health recommendations. Alternative arrangements for your supports may be required if you are returning from overseas, where you have a COVID-19 diagnosis or have had contact with someone who has.... Where the above occurs we would ask that you inform your Neighbourhood Coordinator who will then work with you to put in place strategies to ensure you are supported safely. All supports are being delivered to avoid large groups. >These are challenging times, but some essential knowledge and few practical actions can help keep you safe: COVID-19 is a virus that needs a host by being in our throat and lungs cells to reproduce. It is bad at surviving on its own, but can survive on surfaces for a time as below. >How does it get into our throat and lungs? It needs to get in via our facial mucous membranes (wet parts of face) being the eyes, nose and mouth. This is through two main ways: - Aerosol effect of someone sneezing or coughing in close proximity (droplets land on your mucous membranes). - By touching a surface that has live COVID-19 then touching your eyes, nose or mouth mucous membranes. >How long can it survive outside our lungs and throat? It can survive outside a host for hours and sometimes days depending on the surface. Tests have shown the following survival rate outside a host: - Copper surface - 4 hours - Cardboard - 24 hours - Stainless Steel and Plastic - detectable after 72 hours - Plastic - it had a half-life of 6.8 hours meaning there was half as many left after 6.8 hours >Avoidance Strategies Social Distancing - Endeavour to keep 1.5 metres from others (aerosol effect minimised from others) - Minimise your contact with other people. Hygiene - Wash hands regularly especially after contacting surfaces that may have the virus or surfaces used by others. https://www.hha.org.au/lo/promotional-materials/video-clips is a good nursing video. - Clean down surfaces that may have the virus on them regularly taking note of how long it can survive as above. - Use coughing etiquette into elbow in absence of tissues. Dispose of tissues Cleaning Strategies Soap and water should be used for hand hygiene if available and alcohol-based hand rub at other times. Soap is a better killer than alcohol. Routine cleaning of frequently touched hard surfaces with detergent/disinfectant solution/wipe: - Soap works so effectively because its chemistry pries open the coronavirus’s exterior envelope and causes it to degrade. These soap molecules then trap tiny fragments of the virus, which are washed away in water. - Amount of alcohol needed in hand sanitiserat least 60 percent by volume - Using bleach is like using a bludgeon to swat a fly".
