23.01.2022 If you read our previous informative post about Dental Erosion then you may be interested to know some common sources of acid that may unknowingly damage your teeth, these are: - Acidic drinks such as carbonated soft drinks (both regular and sugar-free), sports drinks, energy drinks, red and white wines, fruit juices, and cordials. - Acidic foods such as fruit jams, vinegar base foods such as pickled vegetables, citrus fruits, and some salad dressings. - Acidic medications su...ch as chewable vitamin C tablets, some cough syrups, some antiseptic mouthwashes, or medications that cause acid reflux such as aspirin or NSAIDs. - Dry mouth as this means less saliva present to regulate the mouth's pH levels. Please note that this is not a complete list of acid sources, also do not stop taking medications you may think are exposing you to acid. If you are concerned, seek professional advice from your doctor or dentist.

04.01.2022 Dental erosion is known as the loss of tooth enamel and other tooth structures due to frequent exposure to strong acids. The most common causes of this acid exposure are from things such as acidic foods and drinks, medication, and stomach acid from conditions such as reflux. The loss of enamel can vary but in severe cases, the teeth can be dissolved literally down to the gumline. Increased erosion of tooth enamel can result in the dentine and pulp of the tooth becoming expose...d causing symptoms of pain and sensitivity. This can lead to the formation of abscesses and the loss of a tooth may occur. Australian dentists are reporting that dental erosion is becoming more frequent particularly among children teenagers and young adults. Here are some tips and tricks to help limit or prevent acid erosion of your teeth: 1. Rinse your mouth out with water immediately after consuming acidic food or drink 2. Limit acidic drinks to mealtime where the saliva flow is increased therefore regulating the pH of the mouth. 3. Drink acidic drinks through a straw. Place the straw behind your front teeth and swallow the drink straight down without swishing through your mouth. 4. Delay toothbrushing for at least 30 minutes after acid exposure to allow saliva to help stabilize the tooth enamel. 5. Chew sugar-free gum to increase saliva production 6. Brush with a fluoride-based toothpaste both morning and night The best way to prevent dental erosion is to avoid acid sources, if you think that you may be suffering from dental erosion please seek advice from your dentist as there are various treatments available.
