22.01.2022 Physical activity is one element to a healthy and enjoyable life, yet one in two Australian workers spend 55 per cent of the day seated and on average 22 hours ...behind a desk each week. Prolonged sitting and a lack of physical activity takes an immense toll on our bodies and are associated with a wide range of health problems, including premature degeneration of spinal discs, inflammation of joints, connective tissues and nerves. Painful back and neck problems are also likely results of continually sitting with a poor posture or awkward sitting postures, which if left unresolved, can become chronic conditions. With just one in three (30%) Australians achieving the recommended amount of physical activity per week, it’s little wonder that 70-90 per cent will suffer from lower back pain at some point in their lives. Supporting October’s National #SafeWorkMonth, Osteopathy Australia is encouraging Australians to incorporate simple movements such as stretching, standing up, walking meetings, changing postures regularly and micro-breaks into their working day to reduce the risk of developing a chronic pain problem, or a work-related musculoskeletal complaint. 21.01.2022 Today marks the starts of Tradies National Health Month! In support of the month, we want to focus on educating and engaging tradies on the importance... of full-body health and safety, with handy tips and hints tailored to the needs of a tradie. Osteopathy Australia member, Rebecca Kurrle shares with us her #TradiesTipOfTheWeek: Adjust your tool belt Lighten the weight of your tool belt as much as possible. Disperse weight evenly on both sides. A tool belt that is heavier on one side may contribute to lower back pain. Utilise suspenders to help distribute weight through shoulders and upper back. Put your most frequently used tools on the same side as your dominant hand, this reduces repetitive twisting and reaching around your body. Make sure tools fit securely to avoid them falling out and injuring your foot. Impacted by pain whilst on the job? 14.01.2022 Knee pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints. A stable, pain free knee requires all the bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and bursae to fu...nction in unison and hence there are many elements that may contribute to your pain. Knee pain can affect all age groups, from toddlers to the elderly and can be acute or chronic in nature. Upon consultation with your #osteo, they may determine the cause of your knee pain and most importantly, may help you correct the mechanical imbalances of your knee and other associated regions, so that you can move around with confidence and comfort. If need be, your osteopath will refer you for further medical assessment. Find your local #osteopath here and how they may help with your knee pain https://www.osteopathy.org.au/find-an-osteo

12.01.2022 Even though 1 in 6 Australians suffer from Arthritis, it doesn't have to be a scary diagnosis! Whilst #osteopathy can't reverse the results of your arthritis, ...an osteopath may help improve the mobility of your damaged joints which may not only help with the symptoms, but hopefully prevent further damage. 07.01.2022 With the winter sports season in #Australia getting underway, Osteopathy Australia member, Nick Brasher, gives some nifty tips to stay prepared, ready and self-...manage your risk of injury! Start now - if you haven’t started pre-season training, do so now. Begin a graduated program that is specific to your chosen sport and fitness levels. Increases in training load and intensity should be steady and reflect the requirements of your sport. Plan work with your #osteopath to develop a plan of attack for the season ahead. This may involve identifying whether you need to work on things like strength, stability, mobility or flexibility and include a combination of clinical and home based approaches. Warm up properly your warm up is just as important as training and should be sport specific. It should include a range of exercises that mimic the key components of your sport. Most major sports have released specific Injury Prevention Programs. Whilst it is almost impossible to prevent some injuries, these programs provide a great framework of warm up and activation exercises to prepare you for the real thing. Learn from the past - if you have a history of injury, make sure you have rehabilitated it properly and have worked with your #osteopath to put steps in place to prevent it occurring again. A thorough rehabilitation and strength program is a vital component to avoiding further injury and will compliment the aerobic components of your game well. Recover well recovery and the ability to train consistently will ultimately have an enormous effect on your readiness for the season and the ability to maintain your levels of performance during the year. Never underestimate the importance of sleep and nutrition as part of that recovery. #Osteopathy
