24.01.2022 We began last week by sharing Nairne Locals post on the iconic Post Office as mail sorting was moved to a new location for the first time in a 130 years. Within the Nairne Museum collection is a beautiful piece celebrating former Post Mistress Blanche de Gacher on her retirement. Her legacy continues to be recognised today with the naming of De Gacher Street adjacent the old Nairne Railway Station. Text reads as follows:... "To Miss Blanche de Gacher Nairne We, the Residents of the Town and District of Nairne, desire on the occasion of your retiring from the position of Postmistress at Nairne - an appointment you have held for the last thirty-five years- to express to you our great appreciation of the valued and efficient services you have rendered to all having business with the Post Office during the many years you have resided amongst us. In carrying out your onerous duties in connection with the Post Office, Telegraph and Telephone Services, we have always found you most helpful and obliging, and whilst sincerely thanking you for what you have done for us in your official capacity as Postmistress, we gratefully recognise that whenever your services, either in a private or public capacity, could be of assistance you willingly tendered them. We greatly regret that you are retiring from the Post Office, but glad to know that you are taking up your residence in Nairne, where we hope you will spend many happy years. Signed on behalf of the Residents, J. Hawthorne Chairman of District Council, Nairne." Chairman of Committee. 15.01.2022 From Monday November 30th 2020, the mail in Nairne will be processed at a new location for the first time in 130 years. As we celebrate this significant develo...pment, we wanted to reflect on the history of the post office. The Nairne Post Office must have been the most visited building in the Main Street of Nairne. The building is described as a mid-Victorian era, government style brick and stone post office, with a projecting gabled front containing paired, narrow windows, the Royal crest and a veranda, with a gabled roof. The style is typical of government buildings of the era. The original post office was built around 1889 and is the projecting front, with the Royal crest above the two windows, which is now part of the residence. The structures to the sides, including the section where the post office operated until recently, were extensions in later years. The land for the post office was transferred in 1876 to "Her Most Gracious Majesty Lady Queen Victoria" for the purposes of a post office, telegraph station and police station. It took another 13 years for the post office to be operating there, by which time a separate police station was built. In 1952, the post office was transferred from "the Crown" to the Post Master General's Department of the Commonwealth of Australia (the PMG), in whose ownership it stayed until it became privately owned in 1979. Although the business of the Nairne Post Office has changed significantly in the 130 years since it opened and is now in a modern new location, it will remain the hub of the community. The owners of the Nairne Licenced Post Office, Craig and Carole Sadler, make a valuable contribution to our community, not just through their business, but through their generous character and significant level of volunteering. In the old photo, taken in 1895, the original post office is on the right. Nairne was an important staging point for the mail delivery from Adelaide to the eastern states. The mail coach from Adelaide would stop in Nairne to meet and transfer mail to the coach from Murray Bridge. The driver would stay in Nairne overnight and return to Adelaide the next day with the mail for Adelaide, making Nairne an important first and last stage in a complex relay of mail coaches that carried the mail in and out of Adelaide to Sydney and Melbourne. #nairnehistory See more

11.01.2022 Today is World Digital Preservation Day At this time, the Nairne Museum's collection contains very few digital archives. This may change in the future. With the theme 'Digits: for Good,' World Digital Preservation Day 2020 is an opportunity to connect the digital preservation community and celebrate the positive impact digital preservation has, for good or at least for as long as required.
