25.01.2022 In Nakamura Ryu Battodo, besides precise sword techniques the swordsman, to be effective, also needs strength and cutting-power. To train just with a katana may, in many instances, not be enough, and, for that reason, a more heavy training-aid tanren-bo has been introduced to not only develop strength and endurance, but also a strong core, strong spirit and correct posture. There are basically two heavy training aids used in Japanese swordsmanship: the suburito for swinging... exercises to create proper sword-grip, cutting angle and stopping power. The tanren-bo: much heavier; between 1.6kg to 2.5kg can not, and must not, be used in hast, as this would damage and tear ligament in the shoulder, elbow and wrist and, therefore needs to be used slowly and deliberately: all the while to develop a strong- grip; wrists; arms; shoulders; and a powerful mid-section; lower-back- and gluteal muscles. The most common mistake while cutting or thrusting with the katana is trying to get power from the shoulders instead from the midsection; and abdomen hara. To overcome this problem, one simply has to concentrate on tightening the abdominal- and gluteal muscles, and often the correct posture will materialise instantly: see photos. The photos show the 5 basic sword techniques: kesa-giri; kiriage; mayoko-giri; kiriotoshi; and tsuki, after completion a) the incorrect way with shoulders tensed and up and b) the correct way with hara out and shoulders relaxed. 17.01.2022 In the 90s iado was still an unknown entity to most and, while teaching natural-therapies at the Macquarie Community College, I was asked if I would be interested to publicly demonstrate and later teach Japanese swordsmanship at the college. This photo was taken at one of the Macquarie Community College's public promotions; here at North-Rocks shopping center in 1996.

14.01.2022 A martial-artist should never use old age to stop training. At age 83 I had to overcome some debilitating health issues but, with determination and a set goal in mind, I have come out of it stronger and more determined as ever. Photos in the month of COVID-19, 2020

14.01.2022 This 2018 video, 'Paper cutting variations with a bokken'*, must have fallen under the radar. Well, here it is..............: * Cutting paper with a bokken may look easy, but requires total blade-control and a perfect cutting-angle, especially when slicing through an unsupported sheet hanging on its edge.
