10.01.2022 For the prone paddlers. Dave Kalama expanding foiling options . @davekalama The code has been cracked. About a year ago I was able to prone downwind in Hoodriver because the swells are so tight and steep and easy to catch, but I just couldn’t get over the hump here on Maui, and more specifically Maliko. It was quite disheartening at times, and even really scary at times, to be out in blue water by myself thrashing around trying to catch open ocean swells with no success at... times really made me question my intelligence. So I bought a decent size diving knife, just in case the landlord shows up, I made some bigger hand paddles, and modified my designs. Now I’m at about 14 consecutive prone downwind Malikos and loving every minute of it. People that know me keep asking why do prone instead of regular Sup foil downwind. Quite simply, it’s the intensity. Tight rope walking with a net and without a net are technically the same, but I guarantee that it don’t feel the same when that nets not there. Or free climbing versus with ropes, way different intensity levels. The beauty is my falls don’t hurt as much. Is it easy? No, but foiling isn’t easy. It’s a challenge, and I love challenges. Plus, if an old fart like me can do it, how hard can it be? In these videos I’m using a Go Foil GL 180 with a pedestal tail.
