21.01.2022 FORAGE CEREALS | NARACOORTE SEEDS Forage cereals are a very reliable option for prolific winter/spring forage. Most forage cereals will prefer soils of a well drained nature, but there are varieties that handle periodical waterlogging better than others. Oats/ Barley/Wheat and Triticale are the most commonly used forage varieties and can be grazed early prior to being shut up for hay or silage. Grazing the forage crop early will usually mean a reduce hay/ silage cut so if you... are aiming to maximise your hay/silage yields grazing may not be advisable. Seeding Rates 80 - 120 kg/ha Contact Naracoorte Seeds for all your Forage Cereal options. OATS BRUSHER| Sacrifices quantity for quality hay produce, resistant to leaf rust, similar grain quality and quantity to Wintaroo with higher protein. MULGARA | Good early vigour, resistant to stem rust, excellent hay colour and resists brown leaf tipping. Yields slightly less for hay production compared to Wintaroo but is higher quality. WINTAROO | Benchmark for hay production. Makes excellent early season growth, but don’t overgraze if hay production is main objective. Offers good value for money! COLOSSUS | Rapid establishment with wide leaves and tillers. Seed is medium sized so sowing rates can be lower than other oats. Suits grazing and high quality hay. FORSTER | Very high quality hay variety, excellent early vigour and foliar disease resistance, moderate-tall variety, better suited to high rainfall and irrigated areas. BARLEY MUDAH | Usually earliest to first grazing. Short growing season. Good option if hoping to go from winter forage to a summer fodder crop to maximise production. MOBY | White seeded rapid establishing variety. Exhibits good cold season production. Awnless variety and high yielding. CAPE | Proven performer, offers excellent value for money for cheap grazing, hay or silage. PLANET | High yielding malt barley, excellent all round disease resistance, very high quality grain. WHEAT BENNETT | Red grain, dual purpose, long season winter wheat variety, ideally sown early for autumn grazing. Potential for high grain yields if season holds on. MANNING | White grain, long season winter wheat, dual purpose with high forage and grain yield potential. Feed quality grain. KITTYHAWK | Winter wheat suited to multiple grazings early before taking through for grain. TRITICALE WONAMBI | Dual purpose variety, tall and high tillering, reduced awns, good resistance to rust and CCN. CRACKERJACK 2 | High yielding forage and seed variety. Crackerjack has been used as a high quality producer of bulk whole crop silage. Excellent regrowth potential. RYECORN SOUTHERN GREEN | Fast establishing grazing option. High quality feed with greater forage than other Ryecorns. Can be sown with ryegrass to extend grazing window.

20.01.2022 LUCERNE | NARACOORTE SEEDS Does a Lucerne Crop (Magna 868) get any better than this; Magna and other quality varieties to suit your particular needs available at Naracoorte Seeds. Lucerne is commonly known as the king of forages. Lucerne is an extremely valuable feed source with the ability to grow 12 months of the year depending on the winter activity of the variety. ... Lucerne, with its deep root system, has the ability to stay green throughout the summer months, (acting as a fire break), provides quality green feed when moisture is limited, (when perennial grasses are dormant) and gives graziers the ability to sell their stock when they want to. With dormancies ranging from 3 - 10, there is a Lucerne variety to suit your needs.

16.01.2022 Be sure to keep an eye out for red legged earthmite which can be devastating for crops and pastures. Plants are most susceptible as seedlings and newly sown pastures and brassicas can be severely damaged by these pests. In older pastures, damage is visible as whitening or silvering of the leaf surface, reducing production and seed set for next year. Mites can also severely damage legumes and attack grasses and cereal crop species.

10.01.2022 RAINFALL COULD BE HEAVY FOR SOUTHEAST NSW. A closer look at rainfall for the southeast states carries mixed blessings for the region. Whatever the case, widespr...ead rainfall is possible with the first system coming in during Tuesday through Friday night over the south and east, with the potential for severe weather over multiple states. A follow up system should be on the approach bringing more widespread light to moderate rainfall from the west with a weakening low pressure system and front. More wet weather does exist beyond this time frame well into mid June. For more information about the weather system and various elements, like the page to stay up to date, there is a tonne of posts today from snow to farmers and graziers forecasts and severe weather analysis. All of this will be available on my new website coming soon - Weather Matters with Karl Lijnders. #wxmatters
