16.01.2022 Vale Kerry Hill. In the few years that Kerry was contributing to Perths built environment he made an impact that will be felt for decades. The buildings are fe...w but they are at once approachable and spectacular. I had the great privilege of photographing the first of these, the State Theatre Centre for Kerry. Meeting him and Patrick Kosky on site was a revelation. The respect they accorded their photographer was something I hadnt experienced in Perth before. They were happy to give Adrian Lambert and I three days(!) to photograph their building. No shot list no supervision, just a thorough tour of all that was important to them. There are a lot of #kerryhill posts out there so I thought Id share a few more abstract details of the #statetheatrecentre @ State Theatre Centre of Western Australia See more

15.01.2022 A fitting tribute to a wonderful building and such a great advertisement for the the enduring power of good architecture.

15.01.2022 Today I shared knowledge of our seasons and the sorts of foods and medicines we fished and ate along the way. Check out this website to gain an insight of other Aboriginal groups and their seasons. Happy reading https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indigenous_Australian_seasons

14.01.2022 Back in 2010 we set to work with the owner of this property to transform the house and the garden from mundane to extraordinary. The results of nearly a decade of design, passion and hard work are evident in this video. Enjoy! https://youtu.be/B1bsomTVg_o

12.01.2022 Another of our houses up for sale. Looking as good as the day it was finished back in 2010. Love this house! https://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-wa-subiaco-130

11.01.2022 Recently completed Surgeon House - medical fitout and upgrade to the premises.

11.01.2022 The brutalist Perth Concert Hall and Perth Theatre - Horsecross will undergo a $1.4 million upgrade. Receiving the Enduring Architecture award at the 2016 The A...ustralian Institute of Architects National Awards, the jury noted: "What appears to be quite a simple, white, off-form concrete, post-and-beam construction is, upon closer inspection, understood as being completely innovative for 1973. The building is actually hung from itself, creating enormous free spans and all from one beautifully poured material. Thanks to ArchitectureAU for sharing the story behind this innovative Australian concrete building. #AustralianConcrete #Perth #concrete #design #architecture

11.01.2022 As a kid I would often play on Como Beach. We had swimming lessons in the jelly fish-infested waters and played on the swings on the beach side of the curly fo...otbridges at the bottom of Preston Street. We never gave a thought to the thousands of years that Noongar people had camped and played in the same spot. There were no interpretative signs telling us about the Noongar history of the beach, and our teachers and parents didnt know and probably couldnt have found much out even if they wanted to so we remained utterly ignorant. Now that I know something of the pre-colonial history of the area there is hardly any beach left. The widening freeway has squeezed it into a strip of sand only a metre-wide in places. The freeway really cant get any wider or it will be in the water. I know we have to get into and out of Perth somehow, and it makes for a pretty ride by train, car or bicycle, but its a shame the beach is but a sliver of its former self. Down on the South Perth edge of the river between South Terrace and Mill Point Road is perhaps the worlds most narrow nature reserve, known as Milyu Nature Reserve. The Swan River Trust advises that Milyu is an Aboriginal, but not a Noongar word for Samphire, However milyu is a Noongar word. It was included in George Fletcher Moores Noongar dictionary published in the 1830s and there is even a Milyunup Lake down near Tambellup, in an area of samphire-fringed lakes. In the Swan River in the Milyu Nature Reserve there are remains of what has been described as a possible fish trap (Lynda Strawbridge, 1988). The site is included on the Aboriginal Heritage Register so hopefully that means it is no longer possible but definite, although an interesting 1991 research paper titled An ethnohistorical study of the Swan-Canning Fishery in Western Australia, 1697-1837 says, the evidence for this is inconclusive and it appears to have no confirmed use since European arrival. Perhaps it pre-dates the Noongar people who were here when the wadjelas arrived and was out of use by then. What is known, via Daisy Bates and her informant Balbuk (Western Mail 4 July 1929) is that somewhere in the vicinity of Milyu was Gooyagarup - a traditional camping and fishing area where a Noongar man called Kareen lived at the time of colonisation. It was between Richardson Park and Mill point, where mungaitch (banskia) trees grew in profusion. Bates describes a sort of mungaitch festival happening there when the flowers were ripe. The people used the flowers to make a (probably) slightly alcoholic drink. Its not surprising to know there may be an ancient fish trap in the river at that spot where many people would have gathered and needed to be fed. This part of the rivers edge directly opposite Kings Park was also known as Booryulup the place of magic or the magic people. This information comes from a map created by Len Collard, I Henderson and Lisa Collard in 1996. I cant find the original source unless its Uncle Len himself through his own personal knowledge. I feel like Ive seen it somewhere else but cant remember where. Part of the Como foreshore itself was Beenabup - a place for digging holes. Robert Menli Lyon via his informant Yagan described Beenabup as, The entrance to the Canning; properly the North side; or the Eastern shore of Melville Water, which would put Beenabup down near Canning Bridge. I dont know whether the beach on which I played as a kid bore the name Beenabup or Gooyagarup or something else entirely, but I am sure it did have a name, and I wish I had known it and been able to use it. The picture is a screen shot from the Aboriginal Heritage Register showing Milyu.

05.01.2022 Styled by Lorraine.

04.01.2022 An amazing property that we and the owner have been working on for nearly a decade. Transformed from a very pedestrian bungalow sitting on a barren dry block, into this beautiful house and simply stunning garden you see below. It has been such a pleasure and quite a journey to work with Kerry to achieve what has been created through trust, vision, passion and hard work!

04.01.2022 Couldnt agree more!

03.01.2022 A house I designed over 20 years ago in South Fremantle, not long after I started my own practice. Its wonderful to see how something that just starts as a conversation with a client, that then turns into a rough idea on a piece of paper, ends up years later as an obviously well loved home. Its a very satisfying feeling - like seeing your beautiful baby son or daughter grow into an well rounded mature adult.

02.01.2022 Id like to think this is how we approach any renovation we undertake!

01.01.2022 Our President Suzanne Hunt writing in this weeks @thewestaustralian about the unique role that architects can play in design and planning of infrastructure across WA
